S-SU'PERHEATER.
Patented Aug. 24, 1915.
Application filed April 3, 1912. Serial No. 688,132.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAvro S. JACOBUS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Steam- Superheaters, of which the following is a specification.
In a steam superheater comprising upper and lower parallel boxes into which are expanded the ends of U-tubes, it is desirable to prevent the passing of water, which may accumulate in the upper box, into the superheated tubes, for the reason that the sudden cooling of the tubes, if water passes into them, may cause the tubes to become bent on account of the sudden contraction due to their reduced temperature. The water may also induce a corrosive or pitting action in the tubes.
The object of this invention is to keep the upper box as dry as possible, and for that purpose I connect the upper box by a drain to the lower box to carry off any water which may pass over from the steam drum into the superheater, or which may otherwise reach the superheater.
The invention will be understood from the following description' taken in connection with accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a plan view of the superheater boxes; Fig. 2, an end view, the steam drums being in section; Fig. 3, a side view the U- tubes being shown as broken away; and Fig. 4: an enlarged view of the boxes and the connecting drains.
Similar reference numerals indicate similar parts in the several views.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the upper or steam inlet box of the superheater, and 2 the lower or steam outlet box. These boxes are arranged parallel and into them are expanded the ends of U-tubes 3. The upper box is connected with the steam spaces of the drums at by pipes 5, the steam entering the box 1 passing through the U-tubes into the lower box 2, and thence to the outlet pipes 6. By reason of the ends of the lower tubes in the upper box being a short distance from the bottom of the box,
it is possible for water to lie therein, filling the box to the height of the tangent point of the lower tubes. In order to keep the upper box dry and to prevent, so far as possible, the passing of water that may from any cause be in said'box, through the superheater tubes, I introduce a drain pipe 7 leading from the bottom of each section of the upper box 1 to the lower box 2. The drains 7 have a slight inclination downward and permit a ready flow of any water which may be carried over from the steam drum, or which may reach the two sections of the box 1 from any other source. The lower box is provided with an outlet 8 for running oil the water. The presence of the drain pipe 7 prevents the entry of water into the superheater tubes, and therefore prevents said tubes becoming bent on account of sudden contraction due to their reduced temperature. What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. A steam superheater comprising boxes, return tubes expanded therein, a connection between the steam drum and one of said boxes, and an open drain pipe connecting one box with the other box.
2. A steam superheater comprising upper and lower boxes and U-tubes expanded therein, a connectionv between the steam drum and the upper box, and an open drain pipe connecting the upper box with the lower box. I
3. A steam superheater comprising upper and lower boxes and U-tubes expanded therein, a. connection between the steam drum and the upper box, an open drain pipe leading from the bottom of the upper box to the top of the lower box, and a drain pipe leading from the lower box.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DAVID S. JACOBUS. Witnesses:
