T0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Webster, in the county of Day and State of South Dakota, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Chairs, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates toV chairs and more particularly to convertible high chairs.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a chair for infants or young children which may be conveniently converted from an ordinary high chair to a nursery chair or bed.

The invention consists essentially in an ordinary high chair having a hinged back and hinged foot pieces which are supported by a common flexible member So that when the back is lowered to form a portion of the bed bottom the foot piece will be raised to form another portion of the bed bottom.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character having a hinged back and a head piece hinged thereto and arranged to be turned to an outof-the-way position when the device is set up in the form of a chair and turned to produce a head piece when the device is converted into a bed. i

Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this application, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with the parts arranged for use as a chair.

Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device arranged for use as a bed. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4; is a plan view of the auxiliary seat. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the chair with the foot piece in raised position and the tray or table suspended from one of the side elements.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents the supporting legs of the device which are four in number and are connected together adjacent their lower ends by the diagonally arranged braces 2. The upper portions of the legs are connected together on the sides and back of the device by thercross pieces 3 and supported upon the legs and these cross pieces is an apertured seat 4l. The legs 1 extend above the seat 4: to provide supports 5 for the side arms 6 and guides for the flexible members to be hereinafter described.

Hinged to the front of the seat, as shown at 7, is a combined foot piece and bed section 8 having sides 9 and an end piece 10 which provides a foot rest when the part 8 is lowered, as shown in Fig. 1.

Hinged to the rear portion of the seat is a combined back and bed section 11 consisting of the cross bars 12 and 13 and the slats or filler pieces 14. Connecting the back and foot sections are flexible elements 15 which may be in the form of chains, as shown, or other suitable cables, and these flexible elements extend upwardly from the back and foot sections and through apertures 16 formed in the extensions 5 of the legs, the portions of the flexible elements connected to the foot section first passing through the posts 17 carried by and movable with said section.

When the back is raised to the position shown in Fig. 1 the foot Section S will gravitate to the position also shown in said figure and when the back section is lowered the foot section will be raised'to the position shown in Fig. 2. In order to support the section 11 in back-forming position there is flexibly connected to the rear legs a pair of pins 18 which may be inserted in certain of the links of the chain forward of the legs. These pins will then bridge the apertures in the legs and prevent downward movement of the back, aswill be readily understood. -At the same time 1 provide means whereby the inclination of the back may be readily adjusted.

Hinged to the outer cross piece 12 is a head piece 19 arranged to fold behind the back 11 and to fold at right angles thereto and extend vertically therefrom when the back is used as a bed section, as shown in Fig. 2. This back section is connected to the legs of the chair by flexible elements 20 which not only serve to hold the head piece in upright position but also serve to prevent displacement of the bed clothes.

Slidably mounted upon the underneath side of the bottom or seat member 7 is a drawer 21 which is constructed to carry a suitable type of receptacle. The drawer is shown arranged to slide from front to back of the chair but it will be readily understood that it may be arranged to slide from side to side so as to make it possible to remove the receptacle from the drawer in a more convenient manner. In this connection it will be understood that when the device is used as a nursery chair the auxiliary bottom 22 is removed and is replaced when the device is used as an ordinary high chair or as a bed.

Hingedto one of the side arms 6 by means of a link 23 is a tray or table 24 which is adapted to rest or be supported upon the side arms and has its opposite end connected to the opposite side arm by means of a hook and eye 25 or other suitable connect-ing device.

In changing the device from an ordina-ry high chair to a bed the head piece is folded over upon the back so as to lie at right angles thereto and the pins 18 removed from the chains l5 and the back lowered in a horizontal position. The lowering of the back draws upon the chains and raises the foot piece from a substantially vertical position to a horizontal position, as shown. In this position pillows or other suitable cushions may be placed upon the bed. l/Vhat I claim is In a device of the class described, supporting legs, a seat carried thereby, back and foot supports hinged to lie in a plane with the seat member or at substantial right angles thereto, flexible supporting members connecting and common to both. the back and foot members and arranged to move one of said members in a direction opposite to the movement of the other member, means for engaging the liexible members for holding the head and foot members in adjusted position, a head piece hinged to the back member and lieXible members connecting the head piece and the legs for supporting the head piece in vertical position when the back member is arranged in a plane with the seat.
