Description

F. B. MERRILL. COMBINED TAG HOLDER AND CLIP. APPLICATION FILED Hum, 1914,
4 QDMMQ rennin E. MERRILL, 01E EVANSTON, minors.
COMBINED TAG-HOLDER All-W10 GLIDE.
To all whom it may concern:
]Be it known that ll, FRANK E. Manama, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Evanston, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tag-Holders and Clips, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in clips and has for its object the provision of a clip which will be provided with a tag or identifying device so as to permit of the tagging or designating of the sheets of pa per or other articles in conjunction with which the clip is employed.
A further object is the provision of a clip as mentioned which will be on simple and economical construction and in which the tag or designating element may be readily and easilv applied or attached and as readily and easily disconnected when desired. Other objects will appear hereinafter. With these objects in view, my invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing,
forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a perspective view of a clip embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a section taken on substantially line m-a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail section on substantially line fl/--y of Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a clip consisting of jaw members 1 and 1'. Coopcrating with said jaw members is a tubular resilient member 2, which connects said jaw members and serves to normally hold the same in clamping or operative relation with each other, the longitudinal edges of said member 2 engaging against the outer sides of said jaw members as shown in the several views. The rearward edges of said jaw members are reduced in width so as to constitute handlesor finger pieces 3, which project through openings 4, provided at the rearward side of member 2, as clearly shown in Fig 2. The arrangement is such, as will be observed, that the member 2 is normally in a condition of tension, the resiliency thereof serving to press the forward or clamping edges of the jaw members into clamping or operative relation, as above Patented Mar. FM, it
mentioned. Said jaw members are provided ad acent the1r forward edges with heads 5, which engage against the rearward sides of the longitud nal edges of member 2, serving to prevent displacement of the'jaw members, as Wlll be readily understood. Cooperating w1th the ellp thus formed is a plate 6, which serves 1n the capacitv of a tag holder, the tag 7 whlch IS in the form of a rectangular ticket or plate of card-board, being detachably secured to the member 6 by means of ears 8, which are punched or pressed from member 6 as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The tag 7 1s slid to position under retaining ears 8 from the left, and is releasably locked in position by means of an inclined ear or shoulder 9, pressed from the plate 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 3; it being clear that withthis provision, insertion of the tag to position will not be interfered with, said tag be ng, however, automaticallylocked in positlon bv engagement'of the left band edge thereof with the shoulder 9 when said tag is in its proper position upon the holder. Also, with this arrangement, when it is desired to remove the tag, it is only necessary to flex the lefthand edge portion thereof outwardly to disengage the shoulder 9, when said tag will be free for lateral sliding and hence disengagement. Thus, with; this arrangement, ready removal of the tag in order to permit of the insertion of another when desired. is rendered possible.
The tag holder itself is transversely curved to conform with the curvature or formation of the member 2, whereby said tag holder fits snugly upon said member 2 and does not interfere with the free operatlon of the clip. Provided at one of the longitudinal edges of said holder is an inwardly turned flange 10, which embraces one of the longitudinal edges of member 2,
being clamped between said edge and the adjacent jaw member 1. With this arrangement'it will be seen that the resiliency of the member 2 is further utilized to retain the tag holder in operative position. In practice, the tag holder is slid to operative position upon the member 2 from one end of the latter. In order to facilitate the engagement offlange 10 with the edge of the memher 2, which cotiperates therewith, one end of said edge is beveled or cut away at 11, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. The bevel or inclination of the portion 11 is such that the outer extremity thereof is positioned above the crest of the corresponding bead 5 in order to further insure against any obstruction in the insertion of the tag holder to operative position, as will be readily understood.
With the arrangement set forth then 1t will be seen that the tag holder and hence the tag carried thereby are detaehably secured to the clip, being held thereon simply by friction and so that if it isnot desired to use the tag it may be readily dispensed w 1th by detaching the ta holder. The provrslon upon a paper clip 0 a tag as mentioned 18 of special utility where it is desired to fasten together a number of papers pertaining to some one subject, estate, case or the like, it being possible with this arrangement to tag or designate the clip so as to avoid confusion and facilitate the location and handling of the papers engaged.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eifect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore,'do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a clip comprising a pair of jaws and a resilient member for normally holding said jaws in clamping relation, said resilient member having an edge pressing against one of said jaws, of a designating member mounted upon said resilient member and formed to conform with the formation of the latter, said designating member having aportion engaging under said edge of said resilient member whereby the said designating member is held in position through the resiliency of said resilient member, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a clip comprising a pair of jaws and a resilient member for normally holding said jaws in clamping relation, said resilient member having an edge pressing against one of said jaws, of a designating member mounted upon the upper side of said resilient member and having a portion extending around said edge of said resilient member and engaging against the masses under side of the latter, whereby said designating member is held against relative rocking, said designating member being held in position through the resiliency of said resilient member, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a clip, comprising a pair of jaws and a resilient member, having edges engaging against said jaws to normally hold the latter in clamping relation, of a tag carrier arranged upon said clip and having a flange embracing one of said edges of said resilient member, whereby said carrier is held in position upon the clip through the resiliency of said resilient member, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a clip, comprising a pair of jaws and a resilient member, having edges engaging against said jaws to normally hold the latter in clamping relation, of a tag carrier, arranged upon said clip, and havin a portion thereof inte osed between one 0 sad edges of said resilient member and the adjacent jaw, said edge of said resilient member being cut away at one extremity thereof to facilitate the insertion of said portion of said ta carrier thereunder, substantially as descrl ed.
5. The combination with a clip, comprising a pair of jaws and a resilient member, having edges engaging against said jaws to normally hold the latter in clamping relation, there bein' beads on said jaws engaging against the inner sides of said edge portions of said resilient member, of a tag car- 'rier arranged upon said clip and having a flange embracing one of said edges of said resilient member, whereby said carrier is held in position upon the clip through the resiliency of said resilient member, the ed e of said resilient member engaging with said carrier flange being beveled at one extremity thereof to facilitate the insertion of said flange thereunder, the outer extremity of said beveled edge portion bein disposed beyond the crest of the adjacent ead, substan- 10x tially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of subscribing witnesses.
