To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that we, JOSEPH VERTUNNI and ABRAHAM T. ORELLI, citizens of the United States, residing at Long Beach, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Im` provement in Shearing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shearing niachines, and particularly machines adapted for cutting leather, and the principal object is to provide a leather `cutting machine which may be used to cut straight or beveled edges.
It is a'further object to provide a shearing machine having a blade slidably supported in relation to the frame, and provided lwith a leverage that will provide a parallel and shearing action of the blade in relation to the table.
In the drawings accompanying this speci?` fication-Figure 1 is aifront elevation of the machine showing the slide extended and broken away showing a cross section of the same. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation view from the front and carried through the supporting vbracket and the cutting slot. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-'3, a portion of the frame being shown in end elevation. Fig. 4 is al plan view of the bracket end of the frame.
More specifically in the drawings, 5 designates the base having the top plate 6 parallel withv the front face of which is the slotted guideway provided Q to carry the liange guide plate 7 a slot 8 providing a cutting edge at its upper front corner for the knife blade, and an aperture 13 preferably extending longitudinally of the frame through which the scraps of leather mayl fall to the recess provided under the top plate. Mounted on one end ofthe frame is the bracket 9 vertically disposed above the plate adjacent to the end and provided with an arm 10 which extends in a substantially horizontal direction over the top and parallel with the cutting edge slot, this arm is preferably slotted at its end and points intermediate forming slots 11 and 12, in the former of which is pivoted the operating lever 14 on the bolt 15, this operating arm is of the configuration shown and is of sufH- cient length to provide leverage action sufficient to cut the usual sole leather, for which this invention is particularly designed, is provided with a plurality of ears 1,6 and 17 Specicaticn of Letters Patent. The lower arm 30 of the bell crank lever is pivotally connected to the yoke end of the strap` 31 bythe pivot pin 32, the other end of'th'is connecting strap being pivoted in the slotted ear 16 by means of the boltf Viththe slide 7 in position shown in Fig. l, the blade is elevated and ready to cut. In the view Fig. 2 shows the blade housed in the slot 8 having passed the cutting edge and reached thelimit of its movement.
The slide 7 is provided with a tongue 40 which is adapted to slide in the guide way previously mentioned parallel with the cutting edge slot 8, .the slide having a' base flange 41 provided with a slot 42 which embraces the clamping screw 43 provided with a hnurled head 44. vExtending upwardly from the base flange vis the vertical flange 45, the lower corner 46 of which is adapted to register or be parallel with the cutting edge of the slot 8, the face being inclined away yfrom the knife as clearly shown in Fig. 3
so that the edges of the pieces of leather desired to be tapered or vskewed are inserted under the knife blade in its raised position with the face to which the bevel is approached in contact with the inclined face of the flange when the shearing action of the knife blade will give the proper bevel. The flange base 11 may be adjustably secured so that the angle may be changed if desired and as before stated, the slide can be drawn out of its engaging position with the knife by releasing the screw 43 and sliding the same outwardly as shown in Fig. l. The arm 28 of the bell crank being longer than the arm 30 the corner of the blade and knife holder nearest the finger 2.4 is depressed more rapidly than the portion of the blade outwardly disposed so that the blade cuts at anangle to the top blade.
What we claim is:
l. ln a shearing machine, the combination of a plate having a slot providing a cutting edge, a bracket on the plate, a rigid arm on the bracket extending parallel with the slot, an operating lever pivoted to the outer end of the arm, a knife blade holder extending parallel with the slot in the frame pivotally connected adjacent to one end to the underside of the lever, a bell crank lever on the arm having upwardly and downwardly projecting arms extending toward the operating lever, a link connecting the lower arm of the bell crank lever to the operating lever at a point intermediate of the pivotal mounting of the arm and its connection with the blade holder, and a link connecting the other arm. of the bell crank lever to the blade holder adjacent to the end'thereof and opposite its connection with the operating lever.
2. ln a shearing machine, the combination of a plate having a slot providing a cutting edge, a bracket on the plate, a rigid arm on the bracket extending parallel with the slot, an operating lever pivoted to the outer end of the arm, a knife blade holder eXtending parallel with the slot in the frame pivotally connected adjacent to one end to the underside of the lever, a bell crank lever on the arm having upwardly and downwardly projecting arms extending toward the operating lever, a link connecting the lower arm of the bell crank lever to the operating lever at a point intermediate of the pivotal mounting of the arm and its connection with the blade holder, a link connecting the other arm of the bell crank lever to the blade holder adjacent to the end thereof and opposite its connection with the operating lever, and curved guiding ears on the ends of the blade holder in slidable engagement with the guide slots to guide the blade holder vertically.
3. In a. shearing machine, the combination of a plate having a slot providing a cutting edge, a bracket'on the plate, a rigid arm on the bracket extending parallel with the slot and having a longitudinal slot formed intermediate of its ends, an operating lever pivoted to the outer end of the arm, a knife blade holder extending parallel with the slot in the frame pivotally connected adjacent to one end to the underside of the lever, a bell crank lever on the arm arranged within the slot therein having upwardly and downwardly projecting arms extending toward the operating lever, a link connecting the lower arm of the bell crank lever to the operating lever at a point intermediate of the pivoted mounting of the arm and its connection with the blade holder, and a link connecting the other arm of the bell crank lever to the bla-de holder adjacent to the end thereof and opposite its connection with the operating lever.
