Specification of Letters Iatent. Paggnted Dec, 15, 1914,',
App1ication filed November 8, 1913. Serial No. 799,957.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, F INGAL GUsTA'FsoN, asubject of the Kingof Sweden, residing at Cloquet, inthe county of Carlton and State of Minnesota, have invented certainv new and useful Improvements in Pocket- Alarms, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains to alarm devices, and particularlyv to that type adapted for disposition in a vgarment pocket and with which an object in said pocket cooperates in such a manner that an alarm is sounded upon the removal of the object therefrom.
More specifically the object in view is the provision of an alarm sounding device suitable for connection within a pocket and carrying an operating member normally placed under tension by an object, such as a pocketbook, against which it impinges, whereby unauthorized removal of the pocketbook from the pocket will release the operating member andactuate the alarm that the removal may be thereby detected.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts all as hereinafter more fullyv described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: y I
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing the. application of vmyv alarm device within a pocket and its coperation with apurse also in said pocket; Fig. 2 is ay fragmentary sectional view similar tokFig. `l and showing the position of the alarm upon removal of the object and actuation ofthe operating'y member for saidalarm, Fig. 3 is a top plan view; and Fig. 4 .is a detail bottom plan of one of the parts for operating the hammer member'of-the alarmdevice. Fig. 5 is a vertical section taken on the planes indicated by line ',-f-of Fig.,1.
' 'Throughout the following detail descrip- ,i
tion, and on the several'gures of thedrawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters. p
It isto be understood in premising the description of this invention that the alarm device constituting the same may be disposed i'n any pocketroffa garment and it is still further comprehended that the said device may be connected with an independent pocket member that may be suitably inserted in a' garment pocket and fastened therein as alining member forsaid pocket.
vW'ith lthe foregoing in view the numeral l designates a garment pocket and 2 an object disposed therein such as a purse or pocketbook. Within the pocket l. and preferably at anupper corner of the same is suitably secured the alarm device forming the embodiment of my invention and which device comprises a casing 3 of any suitable form and size within which is housed the valarm mechanism to be more fully described hereinafter. Connected to the casing eX- teriorly of the same and preferably at its upper corner `4" is provided an operating member 4 in the form of a spring which extends downwardly substantially the length of the casing 3 and has at its lower terminal an arm 4 preferably bent laterally for a purpose which will be understood as` this description proceeds. The spring member 4 is adapted to actuatey the alarm mechanism within `the casing 3 and `for this purpose is provided a laterally extendingarm or eX- tension 5 projecting into said casing near its lower extremityv asi will bemost clearly seen by'reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing. The operating member 4 is normally` held in a position for actuation ofthe alarm mechanism by the object within the pocket l, or ,more specifically the'purseQ, which ycooperateswith the same to hold by impingement against the spring member 4 the eXten-` sion 5 projected into the vcasing 3. r)The removal ofthe Ipurse 2 from thefpocket will permit the spring member 4 to quickly move laterally with respectto the casing into a position 'such as is showny in Fig. 2 such lateral movement withdrawing the arm 5' ing at their outer ends disks 7 which are adapted to strike the plate 6 upon rotation of theshaft 8. f
@ne end of the shaft 8 is formed with a beveledgdisk or gear member 9 coperating with a corresponding gear member 1() carried by one end of a vertically disposed vshaft 11 journaled at each end in spaced partitions 12 formed in the casing 3. The opposite end of the shaftll preferably carries a friction member or roller 13 contacting with a lsimilar, friction member 14 mounted upon a vertically disposed shaft 15 located' adjacent to the shaft 11, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2' of the drawing. lThe friction roller member 14 is preferably formed with a hollow extension 14 at its lower end which hollow extension is formed with a plurality of teeth or projections 14 around its inner walls.v Upon the shaft 15 beneath the friction member 14 is loosely mounted another' friction roller 16 which extends upwardly within the holloviT extension 5 on the spring operating member 4 j which extension normally contacts with said roller member so as to rotate the same upon rmovement of thel extension outwardly from the casing. Thismovement of the extension 5 therefore imparts rotation tothe member 16 which by reason of the coperation of the arms 17y with the projections 14'v transmits motion to the member 14 and in turn said member rotates Ythe shafts 11 la`nd'8 so as to thereby, revolve the hammer member. Said hammer member inrotatingcontacts With ythe plate or' sound producing member 6 f therebysounding thel alarm when the object or purse 2 isfremoved vrfrom the pocket to I rihe free extremity ofthe arm, .asshownv in l'figs.'` 1 land 2, Ais bent upwardly so asto.
permit the spring member 4 to cause actuation of` alarm .mechanismV as just described.
limit the outward movement of said arm by cooperation with theside of the vcasing 3.
,InV order that. they purse may be heldin proper position withjrespect to the alarm device comprising my invention the pocket .l lis preferably provided with an elastic member 18 secured aroundv one side of the pocket, as shownmost clearly in Fig.y 3 of the drawing.y ln order that the pocket may 'be made suitably rigid for laccommodating the structure herein ,sety forth, vone side of the casing 3, designated 19,v may be extended along one side of the pocket as shown in the drawings. f o j 'Having thu'sdescribed" the invention what is claimed as new is: i 1.
