To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, CALVIN Mo- KnNa- Y, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring Valley, in the county j of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Spikes, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in spikes, adapted more particularly for use in securing a railway rail to its supporting ties or sills.
The principal object in the present instance, is to provide a self locking spike;
one that will retain its position in the sill when placed therein, and in which the tendency to accidental withdrawal is reduced to a minimum.
The invention consists primarily in providing a spike with a roughened or serrated surface, and a locking member to be used in conjunction with the spike and adapted to engage the roughened surface and hold the spike in position.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which a i Figure 1 represents a portion of a railway sill, with the rail and rail plate, in section, showing my improved spike in position therein. Fig. 2 is a detail view, in perspective, of the locking member used in conjunction with the spike proper.
The numeral 1 designates a railway rail;
2 a sill or tie; 3 a rail plate interposed between the sill and rail. This plate is formed with an opening 4 through which the spike is inserted, when it is to be driven into the sill.
The numeral 5 designates my spike. The body portion of the spike is formed, on one of its walls, with a series of transverse serrations 6.
The numeral 7 designates the locking.

In applying my device, it is preferably advisable to bore a receiving hole into the sill, through the opening 4% in the rail plate, somewhat smaller than the diameter of the body of the spike, but suiliciently large to admit of entering the member 7. This member is then inserted in the hole, with the larger teeth against the inner wall of said hole; the spike is then entered in the hole, with the serrated surface against the toothed surface 8 of the plate 7,and the spike is then driven home. This action of driving the spike, will. cause the serrations in its surface to register with the toothed surface 8 of the plate, and will force the plate against the wall of the opening in the sill until the large teeth 9 on the plate enter thewood of the sill and engage it firmly.
.The lower end of the plate 7 will assume with the serrations 6 on the spike will prevent relative movement of the two members, while the engagement of the larger teeth on the plate with the wood of the sill, will prevent movement of the two members with relation to the sill, and effectually prevent accidental withdrawal of the spike.
It is evident that the contour of the spike body may be changedit may be circular or triangular, and the plate 7 may be made to accommodate itself to said contour; other details of construction may be varied Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination of a spike formed with a series of transverse serrations on one of its surfaces, with a locking plate for said spike, having a series of teeth on one of its surfaces adapted to register with and engage the serrations on the spike and a series of relatively larger and more widely spaced teeth on its opposite side, adapted to engage the member or body into which the spike and its locking member are driven.

With a perforation, a sill, a spike adapted to be driven into said sill through said perforation, said spike having a series of transverse serrations in one of its faces, a
locking member adapted to be entered in the sill in engagement With the spike, said n1en1- her having a series of teeth on one of its faces adapted to register With the serrations on the spike, and a series of teeth' on the 10 opposite side adapted to engage the sill,
whereby said spike is locked against movement relative to the locking member and both the spike and locking member are locked against movement in the sill.
