DIAPER-PROTECTOR- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 12, 1914.
Application filed October 7, 1912. Serial No. 724,302.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IDA M. WEIBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan f the city of New York, in the county of New York, in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Diaper- Protectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
This invention relates to diaper protectors and has for its object to improve the construction of such garments so that they may not only serve the purpose of covering the diaper as heretofore but shall also assist in the function thereof.
In accordance with the invention the protector is formed with two or more flaps which over-lap when the garment is in use so as to eliminate open seams and to constitute in effect, a second diaper.
The invention will be more fully explained with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a diaper protector embodying the invention, the flaps being unfastened. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the flaps in fastened position.
The protector, which is preferably made of a single piece of fabric, comprises what may be termed a back orbody portion a, 2. depending flap a having its sides suitably shaped to fit snugly around the legs of the infant when the garment is in use, and two similar side flaps a and a which are likewise shaped at their bottom edges to encircle snugly the legs of the infant. The protector may be provided with a draw string 6 disposed in a hem at the upper edge so that the cover may be fastened about the waist of the infant without theuse of pins or the like. The remaining edges of the protector may be hemmed as usual and preferably are provided with interengaging buttons and spring clasps c and (Z respectively, disposed in suitable relationship so that the use of pins or the like is obviated.
Hitherto protectors or covers in which interengaging flaps are employed have been formed so that each flap engaged along its edge the edge of the contiguous flap. This resulted in two or more open seams being left in contact with the diaper and at the very portion of the diaper where an additional protecting thickness of fabric is most needed. In the present invention the two side flaps a and a meet in a vertical seam along the stomach of the infant extending from the waist to the lowest possible portion of the protector. These two flaps when fastened, encircle the legs of the infant snugly and form in themselves an additional diaper. However, the seam which they form is open as is usual in such garments and this open seam negatives the usefulness of the protector as an efficient diaper. An additional depending flap a is provided, therefore, which may be passed between the legs of the infant and brought up and laid over the two side flaps a and a. forming a double thickness therewith. This flap (1' also encircles the legs of the infant snugly and carries buttons a which operates with clasps ll carried by the side flaps a. and a. It will now be obvious that by the novel arrange ment of flaps and the relationship thereof that a protector of double thickness is provided which is in itself a diaper and assist the diaper proper in its function, without, however, being itself unduly bulky.
What I claim is:
A diaper protector having opposed side flaps which meet in a vertical seam throughout the length of their contiguous edges and a depending flap which may be laid on said side flaps to cover said seam and form a double thickness, the side flaps being extended to have their lower edges terminate in a line substantially coincident with the line of fold of the depending flap when the garment is 1n use, and means to interfasten said side flaps and said depending flap.
This specification signed and witnessed this th day of October A. D., 1912.
IDA M. WEISERT.
Signed in the presence of- E. M. TAYLOR, WORTHINGTON CAMPBELL.
