Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1913.
To all whom t may concern: l
Be it known that I, HENRY'I-I. MCFAR- LANE, a citizen of Canada, residingat Extension, in the Province of British Columbia andV Dominionof Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelope, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to envelops, and its primary object is to provide an envelop that may be employed with advantage in the transmission of money and other valuable matter through the mail or by other carrier service, the envolop being so constructed that it cannot be opened or tampered with without giving visual evidence of such fact.
A further object of the invention is to provide van envelop of the character described which may be made from a single piece of material and which may be conveniently and inexpensively made.
'Ihe invention consists of the'features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of a sealed envelop embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same with the sealing flap open. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a horizontal transverse section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank from which' the envelop is made.
Referring Vto the drawing, 1 designates the envelop, which is made from a blank of the contour shown in Fig. 5. This envelop comprises .a rectangular body portion 1 having a pair of side flaps 2 and 3, a bottom flap 4 and a sealing flap 5. The flap 5 may be arranged at the top or at one end, of the envelop, as preferred.
In forming the envelop, the flaps 2 and 8 are first folded inwardly so as to overlap, and are gummed or otherwise suitably secured together. The flap 4 is then folded over upon the outer surfaces of the flaps 2 and 3 and secured in positiomand after the mail or other matter Vis inserted the flap 5 is folded orturned down and secured to the free edge of the flap 4 and adjacent surfaces of the flaps 2 and 3.
In order to secure safety in the transmission of money or other mail matter through the mails in the envelop embodying my invention, I provide means for uniting the flaps in a novel manner. As shown, the rear faces of the flaps 2 and` are provided wit-ha gummed surface 6 extending across the same and intersecting gummed surfaces -7 extending along the longitudinal margins of said flaps. The free edge of the iap 4 is provided with two sets of tongues 8 and 9 which are preferably V-shaped or triangular shaped. The tongues 8 are united to the gummed surface 6, while the side edges of the flap 4 are united to the lower portions of the gummed surfaces 7 thus firmly securing all three iaps 2, 3 and 4 together. The outer faces of the tongues 8 are provided with a gummed coating, as shown at 10, while the inner faces of the tongues 9 are provided with a gummed coating 11. The free. edge of the Hap 5 is similarly provided with a transverse series of tongues 12, which accord in arrangement with the sets of tongues 8 and 9. In sealing the envelop the gummed surfaces 10 are moistened `and the flap 5 folded down upon the same, so that the tongues 12 will adhere thereto after which the gummed surfaces 11 of the tongues 9 are moistened and said tongues folded down upon and secured to the outer surfaces of the tongues 12.
It will be evident from the foregoing description that the double fastening connection formed by the sets of tongues 8, 9 and 12 between the flap 4 and flap 5 provides a secure fastening, as the flap 5 is fastened upon both of its faces, and is additionally fastened to the iaps 2 and 3 by the portions of the gummed surface 6 exposed between the tongues 8. In folding the flap 5 the exposed portions of the surfaces 7 are also moistened whereby the side edges of said flap 5 are secured. It will be evident that from this construction of the sealing portions and mode of uniting the same, the envelop cannot be opened without tearing or otherwise mutilating the tongues, thus giving visual evidence of the fact that the envelop has been tampered with.
I claim An envelop including a body, fiaps at the sides of the body, one of said flaps being gummed at its outer longitudinal margin, and both of the aps being gummed along their inner margins and also transversely gummed between their transverse centers and upper edges, an end flap gummed to the marginal surfaces of the side iaps and having at its free edge two sets 0f tongues securedv to the transverse gummec surfaces of the side flaps, one set of tongues being. gummed on the inner faces thereof and the other set of tongues being gummed on the inner and outer faces thereof and a sealing Hap adapted to be secured to the marginal surfaces Vof the side flaps and having its free edge providedV With tongues adapted Vto be secured to the transverse surfaces 'of the side aps and outer' gummedi faces of t the irst-named'set of tongues anch to be overlapped by and gnmmed tof the inner gummecf faces of the other set of tongues, ;the said inner and outer gummed tongues 'of the end ap being alternatelyV arranged sol as to be gummed to the inner and outer surfaces of the tongues of the sealing flap.
In testimony whereof I afix my signa,-` ture in presence of tWo Witnesses.
HENRY H. MCFARLANE.
