To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THEoDonE D. FOSTER, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Magazines for Disk Records, of which the following is a specification.

The object of the present invention is to provide an improved magazine adapted to contain disk records for phonograph machines.

The magazine hereinafter described, and illustrated upon the accompanying drawings, comprises a plurality of envelops or containers each adapted to receive a disk record. The envelops or containers are fastened together in the manner of loose leaves, and may be provided with a detachable front cover and detachable back cover, so that any desired number of containers may be united or taken away. Each container is provided with a flexible extension at one edge whereby it is united with the other containers, the yflexible extension permitting turning of the container as if it were the leaf of a book, but avoiding flexing the container; because when a disk record is in the container it would be impossible to flex the container without flexing or breaking the record.

0f the accompanying drawings which illustrate the invention: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a magazine comprising a plurality of containers and a front and back, the front being open. Fig. 2 represents a transverse section, on a larger scale, through a portion of the magazine, showing how the containers may be bound together, the front and back covers being closed. Fig. 3 represents an elevation, on a smaller scale, of a sheet of suitable material of which a container is made.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts wherever they occur.

A disk record of the type for which the present improvement is intended is .indicated at 1() in Fig. 1. This recordis illustrated as being inclosed in a container 11, the magazine consisting of several such containers detachably connected in the manner of loose leaves and provided with a .front 12 and back 13. The cover members are provided with stiff guards 14 which are connected with their respective cover members by thin flexible Webs`l5.

The containers 11 may be made in various Specification of Letters/Patent.

Ways; but for the sake of accessibility and durability I prefer making them in the following manner: Using a sheet 16 (see Fig. 3) of suitable material, such as strong paper, the sheet is folded on the line indicated at w so that the two opposite edges 17, 17, are brought together, thus doubling the sheet. The two side edges, that is to say, the edges extending from the line w to the edges 17, are then bound together by reinforcing strips, the strip for one of said pairs of edges being indicated at 19 and that for the other of said pair of edges being indicated at 20. A strip 18 may be applied to the folded edge along the line if desired, in

order to reinforce the sheet aty that point. ,i

The strips are all attachedby suitable adhesive substance. Each container made in the foregoing manner is openy at one edge only and is therefor-asimilar to an envelop.

The edges 17 are preferably provided with `i notches, indicated at 21, by which a small portion of the disk is exposed so that it may be grasped between a thumb and finger to remove it from the envelop. An opening 22 may be cut in one side of the envelop, preferably in the center, so as to expose to view the center 'of the disk, which usually bears a title of the record or some other inscription. The sight opening 22 may be covered With suitable transparent material, such as transparent paper or Celluloid.

The binding strips 20 are made relatively broad, and they are attached to the envelops so that they extend laterally therefrom in the form of loops, the loop portions being adapted to be connected With each other to hold the envelops as in a loose-leaf book. A stiff guard 23, narrower than the loop portion, is arranged in the bight of the loop, as shown by Fig. 2,-and suitable adhesive substance is used to cause the guard to adhereto the loop. The intermediate web 24 between the guard and the envelop permits turning of the envelop Without bending the same, so that when the stili' records are in the envelops the latter may be freely turned. The preferred means of fastening together the envelops so that they may be readily detached consists of Hexible fastening devices such as those indicatedlat 25. The guards 28 are provided with suitable holes for the reception of the fastening devices, and the guards 14 of the cover members are likewise provided with holes adapted to register with those in the guards 23. For this purpose the guards 14 are preferably proiiidedv with eyelets 26. Each fastening member 25 has to told or crease whereby two opposite edges a head 27, and two legs 28 of any desired length, the legs being composed of ductile metal whereby the ends may be bent laterf ally after being inserted through the several guards, so as to be interlocked with the guards. The two thicknesses of the strip 20 which constitute the flexible web 24. are 'preferably coated with adhesive substance on their confronting faces so as to cause them to adhere; but for the purpose oi illustrating the two'thicknesses in illig. 2 they are purposely represented with a narrow space between them.
