TYPE-WRITER KEYBOARD.
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in. the county of Cuyahoga, State of Ohio,'ha ve invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Type-Writer Keyboards; and I-do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in typewriter key-boards.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a key-board in which certain of the characters thereof are of different color, whereby the operation of the shift-keys will be greatly simplified.

Referring to the drawing as illustrated in Fi g. 1, there are shown the usual main keys 5 and a pair of shift-keys 6 and 7 respectively. On each of the main keys 5 is located a lower case character 8 and an upper, case character 9. All of. the characters of the lower case are preferably colored black, and all of the instance, the outer keys of the front row,

being in black and consequently ditlerent from the colors of either of the designations of the shift keys 6 and 7, that neither of said shift keys will need to be operated. When, however, it is desired to capitalize any of the lower case characters, the shift key 7 having the designation Cap formed thereon will be depressed as will be readily understood. When, however, it is desired to write any of the upper case characters, it will be readily observed by the operator that these characters are in red and he must necessarily depress the shift key 6 on which the designation 11; namely, Fig. is c'orrespondingly colored. Also when it is desired to write any of the auxiliary characters 10 it will be readily apparent to the operator that on account of said characters being in blue that he must depress the shift key 7 having the designation 12; namely, Cap which designation is correspondingly colored. i
In the modifiedform of my invention, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the keyboard comprises the main keys 5 and a pair of shift keys 6-6. Located on each of the main keys 5 is a lower case character 7 and on certain of the keys 5 is located an upper case character 8, the color of the lower case characters being preferably black, while the upper case characters 8 are preferably red. It will be understood, however, that other colors may be employed if desired. Located on each of the shift keys 6 is a designation 9, such as, Shift-key, and these designations are colored in red to correspond to the color of the upper case characters 8.
It will thus be observed from the foregoing, that when it is. desired to write any of the upper case characters 8, the operator the combination with the main keys respecti vely having an upper and lower case character arranged thereon. the characters of thcupper case being of. uniform color and the characters of the lower case being of a different uniform color, certain of the keys Patented June 18, 19912.
