Description

L. J. LE JEUNE. LEG PULLING APPARATUS.
APPLIUATION FILED AUG. 3L 1911.
Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
WITNESSES- a] 2V5??? jfiffMM 1, 0 I? 6 WW ATTORNEYS ml-UIIIA PLANOGIAPI'I CD, WASHINGTON, D- C- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE:
LANDRY JOHN LE JEUNE, 0F WELCOME, LOUISIANA.
LEG-PULLING APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, LANDRY JoHN Ln JEUNE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Welcome, in the parish of St. James and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Leg-Pulling Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to physical exercise apparatus, and its object is to provide a new and improved leg-pulling apparatus, for use in hospitals and other places, and more especially designed for exerting a straight, strong pull on a patients leg in case the latter is broken or otherwise injured and needs resting or straightening.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made of a stand, adapted to be placed at the foot of the bed and provided with an adjustable post carrying at its upper end a pulley, arms adjustably held on the post and provided with pulleys, and a rope extending over the said pulleys and carrying at one end a weight, the other end of the rope being adapted to be fastened to the leg to be pulled.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the legpulling apparatus as applied to a bed, shown in longitudinal section; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same.
A stand A, having a base A and a hollow standard A is adapted to be fastened by screws B to the floor, at the foot of a bed C, as indicated in Fig. 1. In the hollow standard A is adjustably secured a post D by the use of a set screw E, and on the upper end of the said post D is journaled a pulley F, over which passes a rope G also passing over pulleys H and I, of which the pulley H is journaled in an arm J adjustably secured by a set screw K to the post D. The pulley I is journaled in the arm L adjustably secured by a set screw N, on the lower portion of the post D, and the arm L extends in the direction of the head of the bed, while the arm J extends in the direction away from the foot of the bed, so that the end of the rope G passing around the pulley I can be readily fastened to the leg 0 of a patient resting on the bed C, while the other end of the rope G hang- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing downward from the pulley H carries a heavy weight P, made in sections to permit of increasing or decreasing the weight by the addition or removal of sections. A clamp Q, straddles the standard A and is adapted to hook onto a cross bar, C of the foot of the bed C, the clamp Q having a set screw Q for engagement with the standard A so as to fasten the standard A firmly to the crossbar C. By the means described the bed and the stand are firmly fastened together so that the rope G by the action of the weight P can readily exert a straight pull on the leg 0 of the patient, to keep the leg in a stretched position,
and thus prevent the leg from shortening during the healing period. The arm L is adjustable up or down on the post D so as to bring the rope G in proper position relative to the leg 0, and the arm J is adjustable to project the weight P a distance from the foot of the bed so as not to interfere with the latter. By making the arm J adjustable, that is, to swing up or down, the device can be readily adjusted for beds having foot pieces of different thickness, thus providing proper space for accommodating the weight P without the latter coming in contact with the foot piece of the bed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 7
1. A leg pulling apparatus, comprising a stand, a vertically adjustable post carried by said stand, pulleys journaled at the upper end of the post, an arm adjustable on the post and carrying a pulley, a flexible connection passing over the said pulleys, a weight attached to one end of the said connect-ion, said connection having its other end arranged for connection with the leg to be pulled, and an angularly adjustable, arm supporting one of said upper pulleys, whereby to permit of the adjustment of the pulley toward and away from the plane of the post and to vary the distance between the post and the suspended weight.
2. A leg pulling apparatus comprising a stand, a vertically adjust-able post carried by said stand, an arm adjustable on said post and carrying a pulley, angularly divergent arms arranged at the upper end of the post and carrying pulleys, a flexible connection passing over the said pulleys and having one end arranged for attachment to the leg to be pulled, and. a weight attached Patented Mar. 26, 1912.
to the other end of the said connection, one name to this specification in the presence of of said angular upper arms being ELdJLISttwo subscrlblng wltnesses. able whereby 1ts pulley may be swung to- T Ward and away from the plane of the post LANDRY H LE JEULE' 5 and control the position of the suspended NVitnesses:
Weight with respect to the post. PASCAL LE BoUEF,
In testimony whereof I have signed my PIERRE GRos.
