VENEER-PRESS FOR MANUFACTURERS OF WOODWORKING MATERIAL.

Be 1t known that I, CHARLES E. FRANCIS,
a citizen of the United States, and a residling bundles of stock in veneer presses, andit consists of that certain novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter particularly pointed out and claimed whereby veneered and built-up stock may be readily and easily handled and removed from the press to the ordinary truck for transportation to any part of the factory desired, without the necessity of providing any block and tackle, tramways with hangers, or other special contrivances for removing the bundle of stock from the press.
It has been customary heretofore to build up bundles of veneered material on a suitable truck or car, and to arrange rollers on the truck and rollers for the press, so that the bundle may be readily pushed or rolled from the truck to thepress. But after the stock has been compressed and is located in position by retaining clamps, no convenient means has been provided to remove the clamped bundle to dry, except with block and tackle, or overhead tramways with hangers, in which to suspend the bundle by chains.
The special object of my invention is to provide a construction by which the clamped bundles may be readily and easily removed onto the ordinary truck or car, without the necessity of a block and tackle, or other mechanical construction to lift the bundle.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved press, with the stock in position-before the pressure is applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the press after the pressure has been applied, and the bundle has been properly clamped. Fig. 4 is a side elevation illustrating the method of removing the clamped bundle onto the ordinary truck.

and with movable platen 3, which platen is raised and loweredby hydraulic power.
Bolted securely to the floor, in front of the movable platen, are brackets 4c, 4, with a channeled supporting surface 5, 5, at the upper end of each bracket, and these brackets support a set of rollers 6, 6, which are oulmaled to rotate in a vertical plane in side plates 7, 7, the upper edge of the series of rollers being slightly above the upper edge of the side plates in which they are supported and journaled." On the opposite or rear side of the press are securely bolted to the floor, a corresponding pair of brackets 8, 8. These rear brackets, for their supporting surfaces, are the same height as the front brackets 4, 4, and sustain the roller The supporting surface of each rear bracket is provided with a roller 9, upon which the roller frame rests, and the rear brackets are made in two 'part-s',-a fixed member 10, which is bolted to the floor, and an adjustable member 11,
which carries the roller bearing for the roller frame.
The adjustable member 11 is guided for its vertical movement in side flanges in the fixed member 10, and is held in position by studs 12' which extend through slots 13 in the plate 11, and the adjustable member of each bracket rests upon and is sustained by a'wedge 14. These wedges'are mounted on a plate 15 supported in brackets 16, so
as to slide therein, and the plate 15 extends across the rear of the press, provided with a hand lever 17, pivoted in vertical position to an upright standard 18, so-that by shifting the hand lever 17, the wedges may be partially withdrawn to allow the adjustable members'of the rear bracket to be lowered for the distance required. Normally, however, the pairs of brackets in front and rear support the rollers 6 at a fixed height and the roller frame and the brackets form a trestle on each side, from front to rear of the press, across the platen, and normally free from the platen.
The bundle of veneered or other stock is indicated at 19, provided with top and bot-- tom plates 20, 21, to form a top and bottom cover for the stock. This bundle is made up of the proper size and number of pieces, when the stock is glued and is placed on a truck, which carries roller slides, the top surfaces of which are of the same height as the roller slide 7 supported by the brackets 4 and 8. Ther-oller-slicles 7 forthepress extend out beyond the brackets on each side a convenient distance sothat the roller slides 7 are about twice as long as the width of the bundle. j-These slidesnotbeing-secured to the supporting brackets can be shifted length-wise; and inorder that they -maintain their lateral position, al'eeessed guide block is bolted to the "front edge of the platen, one guide block 23 for each front bracket. These guide blocks .receive the lower ends of the roller slides '7, andare provided with rentering flanges-to engagethe webbedportion of'the slides,-while-the recesses are ofsutfieientdepthito allow for the normal movement of: the platen =-wit-hout contact witlrthe =fianges of the slides.
To shift the bundle of stoclr from thetruck .upon which it ismounted to: the roller slides 7 over the platen,the slides are adjusted lengthwise, as shown iii-Fig. 2, and there-is a stop 24 on the slide "frame to prevent the slides from being drawn=out to any greater extent in front, and aeorresponding stop 25 is also provided-to limit'the -.rea-rward movementof the slides,'these stops coming in contact with the guide blocks 23. The car is moved up to'the front of the press, and the bundle of stock-rolledfronrthe slides on the I cartothe slides 7 over theplaten 3.
A series of I-beams, 26-jforthe-top ofthe: bundle, and 27-folthe bottom,are-provided,
and these*I-beams-areo'fjsuch a height that they can be rea dilylocatedin place ,across the bundle, witha space 28 bet-ween the-top oftheI-beams and the bottom of the bundle, and aspace 29 between the top of the upper 'turn buckle8-3, so that the clamps canbe tightened to hold the bundle in its compressed condition, The roller slides, which are during-the application of the;pressure free, arethen pushed-to the rear, as shown in. Fig. 4;. The truck '84 is thenbrought' into proper position to receive; the bundle underneaththe projecting ends of= the slides and the platen is then lowered, agai-n transferring the weight to the roller slidesv and free- 'ing the clampedbundlefrom'thepress, and
the bundlecan then flOE rolled -to the rear over the "truck. In a veneer press, the combination with the platen, of fixed supports at the front and the rear of the press, a track loosely mount ed on said supports and extending across the platen, said track members being of a length to be extended beyond the platen to carry the clamped bundle partially beyond the :press, with means for lowering the fixed supports for the track at the rear to lower the load.
4. Ina veneer press, the combination with the platen, of fixed supports at the front and -tl1e,rear of the press, a track loosely mountedon said supports and extending across the platen, normally out of contact therewith, clamp beams for the retaining clamps of greater height than the track members, said track members belng of a length to be extended beyond the platen to carry the clamped bundle partially beyond the press,
with means-for lowering the fixed supports the press, said rear supports comprising a fixed base portion and a vertically movable upr ght portion, and means normally to support Saidupright portion and adapted to be withdrawn tolower the load.
-6. In aveneerpress, the combination with the platen, of fixed supports at the front and the rear of the press, a track loosely mounted on said supports and extending across the platen, anorma'lly out of contact therewith,
clamp beams for the retaining clamps of greater height than the track members, said track members being of a length to be extended beyond the platen to carry the clamped bundle partially beyond the press, said rear supports comprising a fixed base portion and a vertically movable upright. portion, and means normally to support: said upright portion and adapted to be withdrawn to lower the load.
7. In a veneer press, the combination with the platen, of fixed supports at the front and the rear of the press, a track loosely mounted on said supports and extending across the platen, said track members being of a length to be extended beyond the platen to carry the clamped bundle partially beyond the press, said rear supports comprising a fixed base portion and a vertically movable upright portion, with wedges to support the same, with lever and connecting plate to withdraw the wedges to allow the load to descend.
8. In a veneer press, the combination with the platen, of fixed supports at the front and the rear of the press, a track loosely mounted on said supports and extending across the platen, normally out of contact therewith,
clamp beams for the retaining clamps of greater height than the track members, said track members being of a length to be extended beyond the platen to carry the clamped bundle partially beyond the press, with guides secured to the platen at the front edge thereof to preventthe displaeement of the track when freed from the load.
9. In a veneer press, the combination with the platen, of fixed supports at the front and the rear of the press, a track loosely mounted on said supports and extending across the platen, normally out of contact therewith, clamp beams for the retaining clamps of greater height than the track members, said track members being of a length to be extended beyond the platen to carry the clamped bundle partially beyond the press, with means for lowering the fixed supports for the track at the rear to lower the load, and guides secured to the platen at the front edge thereof to prevent the displacement of the track when freed from the load.
