To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, THOMAS F. CAMPBELL, of the city of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper- Tying Apparatus or Loose-Leaf Binders.

My invention relates to a device for securing together a number of sheets of paper by passing a cord through perforations formed by puncturing through a collection of sheets along one edge thereof, and then tying the lace or cord upon the top sheet or cover. The device may also be used for binding together in a similar manner serial numbers of publications and files of various kinds.

The object of my invention is to provide a simple, convenient and inexpensive means for securing and holding, in convenient form for use, sheets of paper, serial publications and files of various kinds, and to permit the ready removal of any sheet, serial number or file and the insertion of other sheets, serial numbers or files within less time than is required in the use of lace or cord binders now in-use.

I am aware that lace binders provided with metal clips on each end of the lace have been in extensive use for a number of years, but that form of lace binder has proven to be inconvenient both in the process of binding and also in removal of sheets and other files.

The distinctive feature of my invention consists in the use of an intermediate or central clip, tip or needle so as to facilitate the threading of the lace through an intermediate or central perforation. It can readily be seen that more than one intermediate clip or tip may be used, if desired, in case more than three perforations are made in the paper.

The inventor does not limit his invention to any particular form or kind of clip, tip or needle, as any kind or form thereof may be used which will serve to thread the lace through the perforations.

In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a View of a lace with end clips or tips and a fixed central clip or tip. Fig. 2 is a view of a lace with end clips and an intermediate movable clip or needle. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a file cut through the perforations and showing the application of the binder ready to be knotted. Fig. 4: shows a portion of files with perforations, and the binder applied thereto in binding form.

In describing the invention similar figures of reference will be used to designate similar parts iii the various figures of the drawlngs. v

1 and 1 represent file covers, and 12 represents leaves or files between the covers. 2, 3 and 4 are perforations in the leaves or files 12 and the covers 1 and 1 in position to receive the binder.

5 represents a lace or binder provided with end clips' 6 and 7 and with an intermediate clip 8.

9 represents another form of intermediate clip provided with an eye 10 to receive the lace or hinder.

11 represents a loop in the lace or binder where the central clip is attached.

It can be readily seen that, without departing from the spirit of the invention, two or more intermediate clips or tips may be used on the binder, as convenience or necessity may require, by simply duplicating the principle disclosed by the intermediate clip or tip shown by the Nos. 6 and 7 As thus constructed the lace or binder can be readily applied to the perforated leaves or files by passing the central clip 8 or 9 through the central perforation l, and the end clips 6 and 7 through the perforations 2 and 3, and then passing the ends of the lace or hinder through the loop 11, as shown in Fig. 3, the binder is ready to knot, as shown in Fig. 1.

In removing a leaf or file, unknot the lace or binder, remove the ends from the loop 11, and. then leaves or files can be readily removed or inserted without entirely removing the lace or binder, and the package quickly adjusted and rebound.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A lace or cord binder provided with a central clip or tip and with end clips or tips, for insertion through perforations and use, substantially as described.
