ADJUSTABLE CUSHION.
Specification ofLetters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7., 1911.
Application, filed August 27, 1910. Serial No. 579,318.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN SMITH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bingham, in the county of Salt Lakeand State of Utah, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Cushions, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to cushions for chairs, settees, and the like, and the principal object of the same is to provide novel cushions for the head and the back which are adjustably connected to the chair so that they can be readily arranged in positions desired by the occupant of the chair.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of a rocking chair equipped with the improved cushions. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional view taken on the line 22, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the head cushion. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the back cushion. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of one set of the supporting rollers. Fig. 6 is a central vertical sectional View thereof. Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the rollers.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, it will be seen that the improved adjustable cushions have been shown in connection with the back of a rocking chair 1, the upper horizontal bar 2 of said back having its lower edge provided with a pair of spaced hanger staples 3, said staples having their body centrally divided by a vertical pin 4 to provide independent bearing spaces for the two rollers 5 and 6.
The upper edge of the lower horizontal bar 7 is provided with a pair of spaced staples 8 each of which is centrally divided into two independent bearing spaces by the pins 10 for the reception of the rollers 11 and 12. Rollers 5 and 11 of the upper and lower staples 3 and 8 are connected by the endless straps 13, and rollers 6 and 12 are connected by the endless straps 14:.
Straps 13 carry the horizontally arranged head cushion 15 which has its upper rear corner hinged thereto so that the same can be raised or lowered relativeto said straps. Straps 1 1 have the upper rear corner of the lower section 16 of the back rest hinged thereto for a similar purpose. Said back rest is composed of the two sections 16 and 17 which have a hinge connection so that one section can be rocked onto the other section to increase the thickness of the cushion, or spread apart, as shown in the drawing to provide a Wide rest for the back.
It will be understood from the foregoing that the improved cushions can be readily adjusted for the comfort of the user, irrespective of size, and also that the sectional back rest or cushion provides means whereby a wide rest or a thick narrow rest can be readily provided.
As is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings, the head and back rests project across and are slidable on the vertical side bars of the back of the chair and are held in contact with said bars by the adjusting straps. This arrangement causes the rests to be supported by said bars when in use so that the pressure thereon will not exert a strain on the adjusting straps.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In combination with a chair provided with a back rest, said rest including upper and lower horizontal bars, spaced roller supports carried by the lower edge of said upper bar, spaced roller support-s carried by the upper edge of the lower bar, rollers carried by the upper and lower supports, adjusting bands connecting the upper and lower rollers, a head cushion carried by one set of bands, and a back cushion carried by the other set of bands.
2. In combination with a chair provided with a back rest, said rest including upper and lower bars, rollers carried by said bars and arranged in pairs, adjusting bands connecting the upper and lower rollers, a head cushion carried by one set of bands, and a back rest formed of two sections flexibly connected, one of said sections being connected to one set of said bands.
3. In combination with a chair provided with a back rest, upper and lower supports carried thereby and arranged in independent sets, supporting bands arranged in independent sets and engaging the sets of supports, a head cushion carried by one set of bands, and a back cushion carried by the other set of bands.
4. In combination With a chair provided ing its ends overlapping and slidable on with a back rest, said rest including upper said side bars. and lower horizontal bars and connecting In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my side bars, a plurality of sets of endless adsignature in presence of two witnesses. justing bands carried by said horizontal bars, a head cushion carried by one set of JOHN SMITH bands and having its ends overlapping and Witnesses: slidable on the side bars, and a back cushion J. W. GRANTS, carried by another set of the bands and hav- J. E. DENT.
