Description

Spacer element
The present invention refers to a spacer element intended to be used as creating a distance between sheet units, preferably glass sheets in a packaging arrangement, said spacer element being manufactured as a longitudinal profile that comprises elongated soft portions for a careful contact against the surface of the glass sheet.
Spacer elements are currently used with commercially available arrangements of the design under con¬ sideration that they create a distance in the form of longitudinal profiles between glass sheets and extending mainly in a vertical direction in order to obtain access to unload several glass sheets, in the form of glass packages, at once. The spacer elements also absorb loads, pressure, relative motions be¬ tween the glass sheets, when they are packaged in or on a packaging arrangement, preferably a support. These spacer elements are currently manufactured from paper board. During transport of these glass packages on preferably supports damages often occur on the surfaces of the glass sheet such as e.g. effects of damp, which is not ventilated away, when wet paper board is contacting directly against the surface of the glass sheet and which in this way creates annealing. Further the spacer elements can create mechanical damage at their contact areas against the glass on the surfaces of the glass sheets in the form of scratches and marks. Coated glass sheets e.g. low emission glass, light and heat reflecting glass have very sensitive coatings, which are especially easy to scratch. The spacer elements also are moving during transport of the glass sheets when they are packed in packaging arrangements on lorries or during internal transport and unloading of said glass sheets in a factory, whereby the glass sheets can hit each other when the distance between the spacer elements is too large. In this case crackings and scores easily arise in the glass sheets.
The object of the present invention is to solve the problems described above in providing the spacer elements with a soft portion on their contacting surfaces extending in divided lengths or in whole lengths along the spacer elements for contacting against the surface of the glass sheets, whereby a careful contacting and an increased friction of the spacer element against the surface of the glass sheet is achieved.
Thanks to the invention a spacer element is provided that is careful to the surface of the glass sheet and which also can be in its position in a better way especially during transport and furthermore minimize the condense risk. The spacer element is formed as a longitudinal profile which is manufactured from plastic, rubber or the like or combinations of these materials. The spacer element has supporting areas for contacting directly or indirectly against the surfaces of the glass sheets in a glass package or between glass sheets. Accord¬ ing to the invention the supporting area comprises at least one or several soft portions extending mainly along the longitudinal direction of the spacer element in divided lengths or in whole lengths, for contacting the surface of the glass sheets. The soft portions protrude a certain height, which creates a distance between the spacer element and the glass sheet, whereby the contacting area against the glass will be very small, when the same only corresponds to the extension area of the soft portion. In the space, which the distance has pro¬ vided a good air circulation occurs, so that moist¬ ure gathering and annealing in the surface of the glass sheet decreases. According to the invention the soft portion is made as a resilent, damping and shockabsorfoing rubberlike element having one or more lips, extensions, rills or the like preferably made of a polymer such as plastic, rubber, silicone or combinations of these material in order to protect the glass sheets from mechanical damage. In a pre¬ ferred embodiment example of the invention the spacer element is extruded with longitudinal cavi¬ ties and walls in forming a framework in the spacer element, said soft portions being extruded together with the spacer element, so called "co-extruded" and thereafter said spacer element is cut into lengths in a fast and rational manufacturing, so that said length is adapted to correspond mainly to the height and/or width of the glass sheet. The soft portions can also be fastened to the spacer elements by gluing, heat embossing, clamping, arranging into grooves, tapeing, shrinking on the whole or parts of the spacer element. The spacer element can also, according to the invention, consist of a foamed profile, built up from a foamed polymer material, which forms bubbles or extruded cavities and walls in forming of a framework in the spacer element. If the spacer element is manufactured of the same material as the soft portion a soft portion automatically will be formed having the desired form and extension.
The invention will be described in more detail below with the aid of some preferred embodiment examples in view of the drawings enclosed, in which
Fig. 1 shows a view in perspective of a spacer element viewed obliquely from below from one side and which is provided with soft portions,
Fig. 2 shows a packaging arrangement with glass packages with intermediate spacer elements viewed from one end,
Fig. 3 shows an alternative embodiment example of a spacer element in a vertical section and
Fig. 4 shows a part of a spacer element in a vertical cross-section contacting a glass sheet.
As can be seen from fig. 1 and 3 a spacer element 1 according to the invention is formed as a longi¬ tudinal profile. Spacer elements are placed in position for creating a distance 2 between glass sheets 3, packed against each other on a packaging arrangement 5, which can be in the form of a support
6 according to fig. 2. According to fig. 1-4 can be seen that the spacer element 1 comprises a contact area 7 for contacting directly or indirectly against the surface 8 of the glass sheet 3. The contact area
7 comprises soft portions 9 extending along the longitudinal direction of the spacer element 1 for contacting against the surface 8 of the glass sheets 3. The spacer element 1 consists of an extruded profile having longitudinal cavities 10 and walls 11 in forming of a framework 12 in the same.
As can be seen from fig. 4 the soft portion 9 extends a certain height from the contact area 7 during contacting against the surface of the glass sheet 3, so that a distance 13 and a space 16 are created between the spacer element 1 and the surface 8 of the glass sheet 3 at the same time as the extension area 15 of the soft portion 9 is limited towards the glass sheet 3, whereby an air circulation in the space is made easier and a moisture gathering and annealing in the surface of the glass sheet are decreased.
