Abstract

The invention concerns a pillow comprising two portions in the shape of two humps separated by a hollow portion (14), wherein the first portion (10) upstream forms a hump designed to serve as support for the user's head and is higher than the second portion (12) in the shape of a hump designed to serve as support for the seventh cervical vertebra. At least the first portion in the shape of a hump is made up of an elastic foam with slow recovery of its shape after compression of at least 5 % longer than 1 second and a resistance to indentation according to the NFT 56-111 standard between 1.5 Kpa and 3.5 Kpa. Furthermore, the hollow portion (14) is provided with a slit extending between the two side edges and designed to prevent the lateral tension on the hump-shaped portions (10, 12) support zones.

Description

Domaine techniqueTechnical area

The present invention relates to pillows intended to the improvement of personal comfort and in particular a pillow allowing the user a position avoiding the problems of lordosis and cervical osteoarthritis.

Etat de la techniqueState of the art

Pillows are currently on the market as described for example in DE-U-29 600 637. comprising two boss portions separated by a hollow intended to place the head of the user there. This guy pillow which, at first glance, seems to provide comfort personal to its user, actually presents some number of drawbacks. Indeed, the head pressed into the hollow creates painful cervical support at the level of the middle part of the cervical spine which accentuates lordosis physiological and whose consequences are important since the posterior vertebrae conjugation holes are reduced and risk pinching the roots spine. During the night, this lordosis increases the pinching of the posterior articular processes of cervical vertebrae which can lead to real "beaks" osteoarthritis "of the cervical spine, which limits their movements, is painful and causes contractures and neuralgia.

The pillows mentioned above have support insufficient occiput which is then cantilevered and a poor adaptation of the height of the support, variable in each individual. In addition, they leave without support the upper dorsal part at the place of the seventh cervical vertebra and prevent displacement of the head, especially the rotation which is blocked by a curvature molding the nape and the support of the skull.

In addition, a major drawback of these pillows is that they are made of foam which are either too firm or too soft. The lift of such foam is not suitable: it is too strong in terms of the middle cervical part and often not strong enough at level of the occiput of the skull. In addition, we use mainly foams with high elasticity like latex, whose memory effect is very fast, to say that the return after compression is instantaneous, this which prevents optimal comfort from being felt because mini deformations of the material around a medium position are too quick to disappear.

Exposé de l'inventionStatement of the invention

This is why the object of the invention is to provide a two-humped type pillow that doesn't have these disadvantages.

Another object of the invention is to provide a pillow of the above type having a shape and a consistency allowing an alignment of the cervical vertebrae of the user.

Yet another object of the invention is to provide a pillow of the above type which has a shape and a consistency such as to avoid the user cervical lordosis and osteoarthritis problems presented usually by conventional pillows of this type.

The object of the invention is therefore a pillow of the type comprising two portions in the form of bumps separated by a hollow portion, in which the first portion upstream forms a bump intended to serve as support for the head of the user and is higher than the second portion in the form of a bump intended to serve as a support for the seventh cervical vertebra. At least the first shaped portion of bump consists of an elastic foam having a return time after compression of at least 5% greater than 1 second and resistance to indentation according to standard NFT 56-111 between 1.5 Kpa and 3.5 Kpa.

According to a characteristic of the invention, the portion hollow of the pillow has a slot allowing a share a better behavior of the material when the user rests on the two shaped portions bumps and on the other hand allows a folding of the pillow bringing the two portions on top of each other and allowing the user to sleep in lateral support.

  • Description détaillée de l'inventionDetailed description of the invention

As illustrated in Figures 1 and 2, the pillow according to the invention comprises a first upstream portion 10 and a second downstream portion in the form of bumps, the portion upstream 10 being higher than the downstream portion 12 when the pillow is on a horizontal surface. Both bump-like portions 10 and 12 are separated by a recessed portion 14 which, in the embodiment preferred, has a slot 16.

As seen in Figure 2, the slot 16 of a preferably between about 2cm and 6cm deep, extends between the two lateral edges of the portion in hollow and ends with notches 18 and 20 which facilitate the folding of the pillow as will be seen by the after.

When the user rests on the pillow, his head leans on the upstream portion 10 at the location of zone 22 shown in dotted lines and its first vertebrae dorsal as well as the shoulders rest on the portion 12 at the location of the zone 24 shown in dotted lines. AT because of the pressures exerted by body parts in support on the pillow, the slot 16 has widened according to the dotted outline 26 so there is no lateral force exerted on the support zones 22 and 24 likely to decrease user comfort as this is the case with a pillow with two technical bumps earlier.

One of the essential characteristics of the pillow according to the invention is that the two shaped portions of bumps serve as support on the one hand to the head of the user and secondly to the hard part of the part dorsal where the seventh cervical vertebra is located. This is illustrated in Figure 3 showing the occiput of the user pressing on the upstream portion of the pillow, and the hard part corresponding to the seventh vertebra cervical 30 resting on the downstream portion 12. Under the pressure exerted by the weight of this part of the body of the user, the two portions 10 and 12 whose outline original is shown in dotted lines in the figure are compressed and perfectly fit the body shape of the user. As already mentioned, the slot 16 has widened thus avoiding lateral tensions on the support areas.

Another essential characteristic of the invention is the peculiarity of the material used in the pillow according to the invention. Indeed this material must be such that it allows a lift well suited to the place of support without being too low or too high so as to obtain a sinking of the support zones as illustrated in the figure 3. In other words, it must promote the alignment of cervical vertebrae so the dorsal part corresponding to the first cervical vertebrae remains right while not being subject to pressures that could cause a feeling of pain. It should be noted that, as previously mentioned, slot 16, in widening when the user's head rests on the pillow, allows the material not subjected to tensions side better to crush in places serving as support and thus not to modify the bearing capacity of the material. In in addition, the material constituting the pillow must have a memory effect with slow return. In other words, the material of elastic consistency should return to its normal shape after being deformed, only after a certain delay and not not instantly like a foam like latex. This slow-return memory effect helps maintain ideal comfort despite the small deformations of the pillow due to the user's movements during his sleep. This comfort is mainly due to the fact that the slow return foam, on the one hand distributes the pressures and, on the other hand, keeps a memory of shapes for a certain period of time which allows a freedom of small movements while promoting the maintenance of the head in the same position during sleep.

As seen in Figure 3, the two places where the pressure is strongest are the support zones 22 and 24 (see Figure 2) of the head and the seventh vertebra cervical. Therefore, the middle part corresponding to the cervical vertebrae undergoes no pressure. To achieve this result, it is therefore necessary that the gap between the tops of the two portions that will serve of support points corresponds to the distance separating the top of the occiput of the seventh cervical vertebra. The distance between the vertices of the two bumps must be adapted to the user's size or age, and must preferably be between 18 and 22cm, and preferably equal to 20cm, ideal for the user to make a custom pillow.

This foam can be obtained by the reaction of a polyol and an isocyanate. The foam is normally characterized by an index which corresponds to respective percentages of polyol and isocyanate used. So, if the foam is obtained from 100g of polyol and 45g of isocyanate (which corresponds to the ratio stoichiometric), the index is 100. If, instead of 45g isocyanate per 100g of polyol, only 60% of the 45g, or 27g of isocyanate, the foam index of polyurethane obtained is 60.

The index mentioned above plays an important role in the context of the invention. Indeed, according to standard NFT 56-111, polyurethane foams (or equivalent material) are characterized by its resistance to indentation: Ri (Kpa) = F 40% / S indentation expressed in Kpascals and being the ratio between the drill F which must be exerted on an indentation surface S to arrive at a compression rate of 40%.

In order to obtain an adequate foam meeting the comfort criteria stated above, this resistance to the indentation should be between approximately 1.5 Kpa and 3.5 Kpa, which corresponds to an index between 60 and 70.

The index of the foam used also determines the memory effect or the return time after compression. Generally, for a given index, the return time after compression is becoming longer as a function of the compression ratio as illustrated in diagram of FIG. 4 which gives the value of the time of return (in seconds) depending on the compression ratio for an index of around 65. Note that for a 5% compression the return time is already 17s. We may also consider that a foam has a slow return if its return time after compression of at least 5% is greater than 1 second.

Furthermore, the higher the index characterizing the weight between the polyol and the isocyanate, the higher the return time after compression is low.

So, as illustrated in Figure 5, the return after compression is almost instantaneous for an index of 100 (less than 1 second), but is 58 seconds for an index of around 65% after compression of 50%. We should note that the curve of figure 4 would be confused with the x-axis for an index of 100 (back instantaneous) .

Another embodiment of the invention then consists in using different foam indices for the two bumps of the pillow, and therefore different resistance to indentation. In such a case, it is wise to have the bump 10 upstream, that is to say the highest (corresponding to the head of the user) made of a foam having a resistance to indentation greater than the dent resistance of the foam filling the bump 12 downstream, i.e. the lower (corresponding to the 7th cervical vertebra of the user). This embodiment provides flexible support for the upper shoulders and the seventh cervical vertebra while the head support (occiput) is higher and harder because of the greater resistance to indentation. This added to the absence of foam between the two bumps (recessed portion 14) allows the cervical spine to align naturally with the weight of the neck and reduce the physiological curvature.

De préférence, les valeurs d'indice et de résistance à l'indentation sont les suivantes : indice Ri Bosse aval entre 60 et 65 entre 1,5 Kpa et 2,5 Kpa Bosse amont entre 65 et 70 entre 2,5 Kpa et 3,5 Kpa Preferably, the values of index and resistance to indentation are the following: index Ri Bump downstream between 60 and 65 between 1.5 Kpa and 2.5 Kpa Upstream hump between 65 and 70 between 2.5 Kpa and 3.5 Kpa

A pillow with two portions corresponding to upstream and downstream bumps consist of foam having different indices (or resistance to indentation), illustrated in Figure 6, is made using a mold whose inner wall corresponds to the shape of the pillow. This mold thus has two recesses corresponding to the two bumps 10 and 12 separated by the slot 16. The adequate proportions of the two constituents, polyol and isocyanate, are mixed in each hollow of the mold. The reaction results in an upward expansion of the mold, which causes a juxtaposition of the two portions of foam on line 17 shown in dotted lines on the Fig.

The slot 16 of the pillow according to the invention can also be used to facilitate folding of the pillow. It is indeed possible as the figure 7, to fold the pillow while passing the portion downstream 12 under the upstream portion 10 by folding the pillow the location of slot 16 which then becomes an edge outside after folding, this folding being facilitated by the two side notches 18 and 20. This arrangement of the pillow allows the user to have his head 32 in high position and therefore allows him to sleep with his head turned to the side, i.e. in the supine position lateral.

The pillow according to the invention can be wrapped in a pillowcase provided that it does not change the properties due to the shape of the pillow and the consistency of the material composing it.

It is however possible to provide a pillowcase reinforced as illustrated in FIG. 8. The cover 38 which surrounds the pillow then has a portion 40 covering the upstream pillow portion 10 and a portion 42 covering the downstream portion 12 containing aerated polyester fibers and therefore of a certain thickness. Parts 40 and 42 being softer than the two bumps that are in below, contact is more pleasant for the user. The two upper and lower fabric layers surrounding the polyester fibers forming a kind of cover. The intermediate part 44 covering the slot 16 does not does not contain polyester so as not to prevent the slot from play its role as mentioned earlier.

Only the upstream portion 50 is made of polyurethane having the properties defined above, then that the second part of the pillow forms a sort of polyester fiber pillowcase, part 52 of which covers the portion 50 as in the case of FIG. 5 and the rest forms a lower downstream portion 54. The portion 50 is found as in a tunnel in part 54.

In summary, the pillow according to the invention allows to obtain support from the occipital part of the skull the user as well as a support of the seventh vertebra cervical spine perfectly optimized thanks to a material having adequate lift and slow return memory effect, to align the cervical spine, to open the posterior conjugation of the vertebrae, and thus facilitate the exit of the spinal roots, which limits the pinching of the articular processes of the vertebrae cervical and ensures prevention of the formation of arthrotic beaks of the spine.
