Description

The invention relates to a device front panel with a mechanical user interface in the form of mechanically controllable control and setting means on the front of the front panel.

There is often a need to change the appearance of the front panel, e.g. the language for a text on the front panel, scales or other changes, e.g. as a result of a changed function on the device. To date, this problem has been solved by replacing the front panel with the associated electronics, displays and control means. This has the disadvantage that a plurality of different front panels have to be kept in stock for a single device.

So-called touch screens, which have several different transparent layers on which conductive patterns are printed, are already known. The layers are so sensitive to pressure that the impedance in the line pattern is changed when the layer is pressed or touched on the screen, this change in impedance being used to bring about different functions in an associated computer. DE-A1 34 09 532, US-A 4 653 086 and US-A 4 566 001 describe such devices in which resistive changes are used when touching the pressure-sensitive layers and in DE-A1 32 30 919 describes a technique in which the capacitive changes in touch are used to control a display device. The already known technology described is particularly suitable for applications in which the user can choose between a number of information images, such as the Menu selection, with process controls in the field of industry, with various instruments, etc. to choose.

The invention has for its object to provide a front panel with a mechanical user interface that is easy to change and bring up to date.

This object is achieved with a device front panel of the type mentioned with the features specified in claim 1. The appearance of the front panel according to the invention can thus be changed simply by changing the appearance of the screen or display behind it, i.e. in this case, the appearance of the front panel is changed by software or by replacing the printed pad. Another advantage of the front panel according to the invention is that it is simple to manufacture, and essentially a known technique can be used. The electrical conductors are preferably produced using known hybrid printing technology and are so fine that they do not interfere with transparency. The front panel is also easy to attach to a screen or display, making it easy to replace.

According to an advantageous embodiment of the front panel according to the invention, part of the front panel is designed such that it can be attached via a screen or via a display, while another part of the front panel is designed such that it is to be attached above a pressurized base. This of course allows a variety of different combinations on the front panel according to the invention. Parts of the front panel according to the invention can also be opaque.

In a further advantageous embodiment of the device front panel according to the invention, it comprises three joined layers, the named electrical conductors and the components being arranged in the rearmost layer, while the intermediate layer as an insulation and spacer layer and the front layer as a controller for the control and adjusting means. The insulating ability of the layer in between must be sufficient so that components such as potentiometers can work with analog signals. In order to avoid the formation of bubbles between the layers, they are preferably joined together by vacuum glue. Alternatively, the front and intermediate layers can be made in one piece.

In a further advantageous embodiment of the front plate according to the invention, a conductive layer, such as a metal or carbon layer, is arranged between the front and the intermediate layer in order to obtain a shield against electromagnetic interference. Alternatively, the front layer can be conductive.

The rearmost layer of the front panel according to the invention can be made very thin, while the further layers must be so thick that the push buttons and the rotary knobs receive sufficient guidance in the area of their passages through these layers. However, the layers should not be made thicker than necessary, since the thickness can affect the transparency. According to the invention, the total thickness of the front panel is preferably less than 1 cm.

In a further advantageous embodiment of the front panel according to the invention, recesses for the control and setting means are drilled in the front and in the intermediate layer, these layers having to have a certain thickness, so that the control and setting means, as mentioned above, one adequate leadership received in these recesses. Furthermore, according to a further advantageous embodiment of the front plate according to the invention, the bushings of the regulating and adjusting means are sealed against the front of the panel or against the wall of the drilled recesses, for example with an O-ring.

In yet another advantageous embodiment of the front panel according to the invention, the screen or the pad provided with pressure is designed like a thin display which lies firmly against the back of the front panel. Cheap displays that are suitable for this purpose are commercially available goods. In this way, a complete front panel unit is given.

Fine conductor patterns are printed on the rear layer 6 in order to connect various mechanical regulating and setting means which can be controlled on the front side of the front panel to a front panel connection 12 in the form of contacts or flat cables. These conductor patterns, which are so fine that they do not interfere with the transparency, are produced using a screen printing technique. The printed conductor patterns can also be made from carbon tracks.

Because the front panel has only a single front panel connection 12, the front panel can be switched on and off when it has to be replaced.

Layer 4 is an insulation and spacer layer, and front layer 2 serves as a guide for the mechanical regulating and setting means 8, 10. Layer 4 must have sufficient insulation so that components such as potentiometers can work with analog signals (FIG. 2). The rear layer 6 can be made very thin, while the front layer 2 must be sufficiently thick so that the mechanical regulating and setting means, such as the pushbutton 8 and the rotary knob 10, have adequate guidance in their respective recesses 14, 16 of the layers 2 , 4 received. The total thickness of the layers 2, 4, 6 should not be greater than necessary, since too large a thickness can have a negative effect on the transparency of the front panel. The front panel according to the invention falls below a total thickness of 1 cm, which ensures a good transparency in a safe manner.

A shielding layer is preferably arranged between the layers 2 and 4 in order to shield against electromagnetic interference. The shield layer is a conductive layer, such as a metal layer or a carbon layer. A Metallized polyester film can also be used to advantage. Since the metal layers can be made very thin, approx. 300 nm, the film is transparent. A thin, woven metal cloth can also be used. A cloth can be made of stainless steel wire or black-oxidized copper wire with a wire diameter of 0.05 mm and a mesh size of 100 openings per inch, which makes the cloth sufficiently transparent.

Alternatively, layer 2, e.g. be made conductive by metallization to serve as a shield against electromagnetic interference.

In layers 2 and 4, recesses 14, 16 for the mechanical control and setting means such as the push button 8 and the rotary knob 10 are drilled. The recesses 14, 16 are widened on the layer 4, so that the pushbutton 8 and the rotary knob 10 in their recesses 14 and 16, respectively, of flange-like, projecting parts 18 and 20, which are on the end sides of the pushbutton 8 and the rotary knob 10 , applied to the layer 6, are held.

Inside the part 22 of the pushbutton 8, which extends into the recess 14 and which is hollow, a spring 24 is arranged. The compression spring 24 rests with one end against the layer 6 and with its other end against the end of the part 22 which is directed outwards as seen from the front plate, the spring 24 pressing the push button 8, from the front plate and from the layer 6 seen, pushes outwards.

On the front side of the flange-like part 18, which faces the layer 6 and its line pattern, two contacts 26, 28 are arranged, which can be connected to the parts of the line pattern provided on the layer 6 by pushing the push button 8 in the direction inwards into the front panel by overcoming the pressure force of the spring 24 is pressed. If the two contacts 26, 28 are electrically connected to one another, correspondingly contacted parts of the line pattern can accordingly be electrically connected to one another by pressing the button 8.

The push button 8 can possibly only be with a contact, e.g. 26, be provided, while 28 serves as a support so that the pushbutton does not lie crooked when pressed in its recess 14 and the contact comes into contact with the layer 6. The rotary knob 10 can be the rotary knob of a potentiometer, a switch, a pulse generator or the like. In this case too, 20 contacts 30, 32 are arranged on the surface of the flange-like part facing the layer 6 and its line pattern. A support 34 is arranged on the same surface, substantially diametrically opposite the contacts 30, 32, so that the rotary knob 10 always assumes a correct position in the recess 16.

In FIG 2, a potentiometer pattern is shown on the line pattern of layer 6, which is intended to be located below the rotary knob 10. The potentiometer pattern comprises a resistance track 36, the ends of which are each connected to a conductor 40 or 42, and a closed conductor track 38 which is connected to a conductor 43.

In this case, instead of the contacts 30, 32, a contact plate 31 is arranged which is intended to lie against the tracks 36 and 38, respectively. A part of the entire resistance path between the conductors 40, 43 or between the conductors 42, 43 is consequently short-circuited and this short-circuited part can therefore be varied by turning the knob 10.

As a result of the rotational position of the rotary knob 10, a complementarily varying resistance is obtained between the conductors 40, 43 or between the conductors 42, 43. In practice often two of the conductors, for example conductors 42 and 43, are coupled together and the measurement is carried out between the coupled conductors 42, 43 and conductor 40.

In FIG. 3, the pattern of a switch or a pulse generator is shown on the line pattern of layer 6, which is also intended to be located below a rotary knob, such as e.g. the knob 10 to lie. The switch or the pulse generator comprises a circular conductor 46. Outside of this conductor 46, metal tongues 48 are arranged at regular intervals, radially inward. A controllable contact plate or a contact tongue 47 shown with the rotary knob 10 in FIG. 1 is continuously in contact with the conductor 46, which is often connected to earth. The contact plate 47 is so wide that it establishes a connection with two nearby metal tongues 48 in certain layers, while in the layers lying between them it is only connected to one of the metal tongues 48. Accordingly, when the rotary knob 10 is turned, one or two of the metal tongues 48 are successively connected to the conductor 46 connected to earth. By measuring the resistance between the metal tongues 48 and the conductor 46 connected to earth, it is thus possible to determine the position of the contact plate 47 and its direction of movement.

In FIG. 4 shows the pattern of a further embodiment of a switch or pulse generator, which also makes it possible to decide in which direction the associated rotary knob and thus also the contact tongue 64 are rotated. This pattern comprises three conductors 54, 56, 58. The conductor 54 is connected to a circular middle part 55, around the circumference of which the outwardly directed metal tongue 60 is arranged at regular intervals. The conductor 56 is connected in a corresponding manner to a circular part which is provided with inwardly directed conductive tongues which are also arranged at regular intervals. Between these conductors is one with earth connected reference conductor 57 is arranged, which is in connection with the conductor 58. In addition, a contact tongue 64 is provided, which can be rotated by means of a rotary knob arranged on the front of the front plate, via the metal tongue 60, via the circular conductor 57, and via the tongues 62. The contact tongue 64 is always in connection with the reference conductor 57, 58 and, viewed from the conductor 57, extends outwards and inwards in such a way that it makes contact with the tongues 60, 62 when it is rotated past. The contact tongue 64, however, does not reach the circular parts of the inner and outer conductors. When the contact tongue 64 is rotated, one of the outer tongues 62, both an outer and an inner tongue 60, only an inner tongue 60, both an inner and an outer tongue 62, only an outer tongue 62, etc., gradually with the Reference conductor 57 connected and the resistance between the conductors 54 and 58 or between 56 and 58 is varied like two phase-shifted pulse trains from which the direction of rotation of the contact tongue 64 can be determined. The exact appearance and the mutual positions of the pulse trains are determined by the formation of the tongues 60, 62 and their mutual positions.

It is important that the seal with respect to the inner front plate is ensured in the area of the bushings for the regulating and adjusting means 8, 10. A sealing O-ring 66 is therefore arranged around the rotary knob 10 in FIG. 1. Similarly, suitable sealing means (not shown here) must be arranged on the pushbutton 8 in order to seal against the front of the front panel or against the wall of the recess 14.

The front panel according to the invention is easy to attach to the screen or the display, and the appearance of the front panel can be easily changed by changing the appearance of the screen or the display. The front panel according to the invention can also preferably over a printed pad, such as a printed cardboard, attached, the appearance of the front panel can be changed by changing the pad. The front panel according to the invention can also be designed in such a way that it is placed, for example, partly on the screen or on the display and partly over a printed surface, and some or all of the front panel can be opaque. This opaque part can possibly be provided with, for example, a text on the front of the front panel, either by printing the text directly onto the front panel in this part or by gluing printed paper to the front panel part.

Instead of a screen or a printed surface, a thin display, which is adapted to give the appearance of a front panel, can be attached to the rearmost layer. This provides a complete front panel unit.
