Abstract
Description
The invention relates to plastic bristles made of a thermoplastic or thermosetting plastic material and a method for their production.
In connection with the industrial use of brushes, for example for sweeping, cleaning, grinding or polishing, so-called technical brushes are usually used which have a brush holder equipped with wire bristles. These wire bristles are somewhat disadvantageous because they damage certain surfaces, for example when sweeping or cleaning, break off under heavy use, make a strong noise and are very heavy. An example of this are street sweepers with rotating wire brushes that scratch the surface of curbs and road surfaces and / or damage seals, which are therefore more susceptible to surface water, frost, oils, etc., become unsightly in the past and are subject to greater wear.
Since the production of brushes with wire bristles - and because of the high weight of the wire bristles also the suspension of the brush body - is also relatively complex and expensive, attempts have been made to use plastic bristles, since these can be produced and processed quickly and inexpensively.
However, it has been shown that, regardless of the plastic material they are made of, plastic bristles do not have sufficient abrasion and breakage resistance to ensure a sufficiently long service life in industrial use.
In addition, especially with the larger bristle lengths used here with pure plastics, it is not possible to achieve sufficient flexural rigidity.
The invention has for its object to provide plastic bristles with increased rigidity and strength and to provide a method with which the plastic bristles can be produced in a simple manner.
This object is achieved with respect to the plastic bristles in that reinforcing fibers are embedded in the plastic material. The reinforcing fibers, which are preferably formed from glass fibers, aramid fibers, carbon fibers or high-strength polyethylene fibers, bring about a substantial increase in the flexural strength, the abrasion resistance and the breaking strength of the plastic bristles, so that a high cleaning, grinding and polishing effect is achieved over a long service life can be.
The reinforcing fibers can be embedded in the plastic material as so-called short fibers with a length in the range of approximately 0.2 to 0.4 mm or as so-called long fibers with a length in the range of approximately 5 to 15 mm. In cooperation with short or long fibers, a thermoplastic material is preferably used, which is extruded together with the reinforcing fibers. The reinforcing fibers can either be incorporated beforehand into the plastic granules to be melted during extrusion, but it is preferably provided that the reinforcing fibers are introduced as short fibers directly into the melt of the thermoplastic material during the extrusion process.
As an alternative or in addition to the short or long fibers, reinforcing fibers in the form of at least one continuous fiber bundle can also be provided. A fiber bundle consisting of a large number of individual filaments can also consist of glass fibers, aramid fibers, carbon fibers or high-strength polyethylene fibers. After the bundle has been prefabricated, it is surrounded with the plastic material (matrix), which can be both a thermoplastic and a thermoset, in such a way that it is completely embedded in it. The bristle strand thus produced can then be designed by shaping the profile, for example to form a round, rectangular, star or another desired cross-sectional profile.
The plastic bristles with integrated reinforcing fiber bundles can be manufactured using the pultrusion or extrusion process. With this procedure the reinforcing fiber bundle is passed through a special extrusion tool and is thereby penetrated or surrounded by a plastic melt, preferably a thermoplastic, supplied via an extruder. Alternatively, it is also possible to pass the reinforcing fiber bundle through a bath of a liquid plastic material, preferably a thermoset, whereby it is impregnated. The bristle strand is then shaped or calibrated, cured and cooled in the manner described above.
While the short and long fibers are arranged in the plastic material of the plastic bristles without a specific grid, but statistically evenly distributed, the reinforcing fiber bundle can be arranged in a special way. When using a single reinforcing fiber bundle, this expediently runs in the central axis of the plastic bristle. If several reinforcing fiber bundles are used in a plastic bristle, these can be arranged distributed around the central axis, a reinforcing fiber bundle optionally running in the central axis. The mechanical strength and stiffness of the plastic bristles can be varied via the number of bundles and their arrangement.
Furthermore, it is possible to embed additional short fibers as further reinforcement in the plastic material in which the reinforcing fiber bundle is embedded, which is preferably achieved by introducing the short fibers into the plastic melt of the extruder.
