Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a photographic support and a coating material for the back of photographic support materials.
The carrier material can be a plastic-coated paper or a plastic film. The back is the surface of the substrate that lies opposite the front that will later be used for the image.
As a support for photosensitive layers, papers are usually used which have on their surfaces, i.e. Front and back are extrusion coated with polyolefin layers. The polyolefins can be polyethylenes such as LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE, polypropylene or mixtures of these components, but plastic films are also suitable as carrier materials.
The polyolefin-coated base papers must have certain properties because of the further processing.
It is necessary that the photographic materials to be developed can be marked on the back of the support by writing or printing and can thus be assigned to specific clients and customers. However, a hydrophobic coating consisting of polyolefin and sealing the paper core can only be labeled or labeled to a limited extent. Special measures and means are necessary so that a general printability or writeability is guaranteed during the mechanical processing of the photographic material.
The processing of the photo paper in the so-called minilabs places particular demands on the back of the paper. These minilabs have a complicated paper path with numerous transport and deflection rollers that put a lot of mechanical stress on the paper. This leads to abrasion with the consequence of transport disruptions and rejects. This results in the requirement for a particularly hard and abrasion-resistant back layer.
It is also necessary that the photographic material coated with light-sensitive emulsions does not adhere to its surface during the development process from the various treatment baths ("tar-stain") which form in aged photographic treatment baths due to oxidation and condensation processes over time.
Another requirement for photographic substrates of this type is good adhesion for adhesive tapes which are used to fasten the photographic paper strips present in rolls to one another. The bonds must not come off during the development process during the passage through the aqueous bath liquids.
Another requirement is the anti-static treatment of the photo paper. The aim is to prevent flashing when the plastic-coated photographic support material passes through the emulsion casting machine or through the developing machines, which would lead to the unusability of the light-sensitive emulsion or to the destruction of the latent image to be developed.
An antistatic effect is desired which is retained even after passing through the developing baths. This enables further processing of the images during cutting and when passing through high-speed sorting machines without interference from "electrostatic gluing".
Another requirement is printability with thermal printers that transfer the printing inks in short periods of time at high temperatures.
In summary, a backing layer must impart the following properties to the photographic support materials, such as writeability, printability, thermal printability, adhesive tape adhesion, abrasion resistance, antistatic finish before and after developing baths. It must not allow dirt to be absorbed by tar-like oxidation products from the development baths.
It is known that the requirements for a backing layer described above require different and often contradicting measures and means.
From the European patent application EP-OS 01 60 912 it is known to provide a photographic material coated with polyethylene on the back with an antistatic layer consisting of a sodium magnesium silicate, a sodium polystyrene sulfonate and certain succinic acid semiesters. This layer is intended to prevent electrostatic charging and to protect the material from dirt. However, it shows poor adhesive tape adhesion, low bath strength and unsatisfactory thermal printability.
Die Schmutzaufnahme ("tar-stain") in verschiedenen Entwicklern ist jedoch zu hoch, und die Thermobedruckbarkeit ist unbefriedigend.DE-OS 37 00 183 describes a photographic carrier material with a backing layer which has good antistatic properties and printability, medium to good abrasion and bath strength and good adhesive tape adhesion. However, the dirt absorption ("tar-stain") in different developers is too high, and the thermal printability is unsatisfactory.
European published patent application EP 0 495 314 describes a photographic recording material which is said to have improved antistatic properties which are also not impaired by treatment in a developer solution. The improved antistatic properties are to be achieved with the aid of a conductive layer, which may contain a water-soluble polymer, but also a metal oxide.
The binders used in this case can be the following binders:
Proteins, cellulose compounds, saccharides, synthetic polymers such as polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylate, polystyrene, polyester, polyvinyl chloride or terpolymers such as styrene / acrylic acid ester / acrylic acid terpolymer, acrylic acid ester / acrylonitrile / acrylic acid terpolymer.
The material claimed in this document has very good antistatic properties, but the abrasion resistance and printability are unsatisfactory.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a photographic support with a backing layer that meets all the requirements described above, such as good printability for printing tapes, thermal printability, antistatic finishing before and after development baths, good adhesive tape adhesion, abrasion resistance and low dirt pick-up ("tar-stain").
This object is achieved by a back layer which contains a copolymer with a minimum film-forming temperature of at most 70 ° C. as a binder and a conductivity substance.

In another embodiment of the invention, the back layer can be an oxide of a metal from the 2nd to 4th main or subgroup. These include, for example, metal oxides selected from the group ZnO, TiO₂, SnO₂, Al₂O₃, In₂O₃, MgO, BaO or mixtures thereof.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the metal oxide is coated with another metal oxide from the group of metals of the 2nd to 4th main group and can contain a dopant built into the crystal lattice of the metal oxide. The dopants in question include e.g. B. niobium, tantalum, indium, aluminum, but especially antimony.
Particularly good results have been achieved with tin oxide using antimony (Sb) as a dopant.
Der Durchmesser der TiO₂-Partikel beträgt vorzugsweise 0,05 - 0,10 µm und die Partikellänge - 3,0 - 6,0 µm.The same applies to a titanium dioxide coated with an oxide of a metal of the 4th main group, which may contain a dopant.
The antistatic properties were tested by measuring the surface resistance with an electrode in accordance with DIN 53 482.
The target parameter for evaluating the antistatic properties of the material before the development process is a conductivity value of 10⁹ - 10¹¹ Ω cm, after the development process a value <10¹³ Ω cm.
In this test, various commercially available color developers from Europe, Japan and the USA were placed in an open bowl and left to stand in the air for a week. The samples to be tested were then drawn over the tar-like oxidation products formed on the surface of the developer in the meantime, then washed under running water and air-dried. The dirt remaining on the sample was assessed visually with the grades 1 to 5, 1 for "very good" and 5 for "unsatisfactory".
(Note 1 - 5).The discoloration of the back layer by the photographic development process was assessed visually after the samples had passed through the developer machine and the samples had been stored for 4 days in the presence of air at room temperature. (Marks 1 - 5).
A commercially available adhesive tape was used for the test. The adhesive tape was pressed onto the back layer and loaded with a weight of 3 kg. Then the sample stuck with the adhesive tape was cut into strips 1.5 cm wide and the adhesive tape was peeled off the sample in a breaking load tester at an angle of 180 ° C. at a speed of 20 cm / min. The pulling force was measured. A force of more than 1.5 N / 15 mm is considered good.
The printability test was carried out using standard color ribbons. The printed samples were immersed in a commercially available developer for 30 seconds. Then the print image was lightly brushed with a finger and rinsed with water. Blurring or discoloration was used to visually assess the printability of the samples (marks 1 - 5).
Bedruckte Muster (s. The resistance to abrasion and bathing was determined by intensive rubbing with the finger on the printed and wet surface of the samples (grade 1-5).
Tab. 1)
