Abstract

A display device for a fuel dispenser is described which has a simultaneous display of an amount of fuel dispensed, an amount to be paid, and a base price per unit amount of the type of fuel dispensed. The counter displays consist of three multi-digit, transflective liquid crystal displays (LCD) (2, 3, 4) having light sources (6) arranged there behind. The three liquid crystal displays (2, 3, 4) are installed in three rows one below another on a printed circuit board (1) which, depending on the arrangement and size of the LCDs, has planar recesses (21, 22, 23) for the passage of light generated in the background by a central light source (6). An inhomogeneous diffusion plate (9) is arranged between the light source (6) and the LC displays (2, 3, 4) in such a way that background light of uniform intensity impinges on all the LC displays (2, 3, 4). <IMAGE>

Description

The invention relates to a petrol pump display device for the simultaneous display of a fuel delivery of an amount to be paid and a base price per unit of quantity delivered with multi-digit, three-row rows of digits consisting of transflective liquid crystal displays (LCD) and one arranged behind the display elements Light source.

Liquid crystal displays (LCD = Liquid Crystal Display) are known in a variety of designs, and the display technology has progressed to such an extent that such components have also found their way into the field of application of petrol stations. In the known dispensers for fuel removal, a standard for the display geometry has developed almost worldwide, which looks so that, for example, the information for an amount, a quantity and a base price per unit of measure are displayed in three multi-digit lines. There have also been advances in the technical development of the LC displays in that, for example, the reading angle has been significantly improved, the temperature response has been expanded, and reliability and service life have thus been increased. Finally, under the improved conditions, the LC displays turned out to be very suitable for use in displays in rough service station operation. In short, the LC display developed into an inexpensive display element with low power consumption and easy to control. It turned out to be a serious disadvantage, especially when used at petrol stations - since LC displays are so-called passive displays - that the readability was insufficient or even bad in the immediate vicinity due to insufficient lighting conditions. Bad ambient light conditions result from the large roofing of the petrol pump areas alone. In such cases, the ceiling lights usually installed are also not suitable for sufficiently illuminating the reading area of the LC displays.

For these reasons, the manufacturers of LC displays have already developed proposals for additional lighting of the LC display components. There are two groups of LC displays judged according to the principles of the type of lighting. Additional illumination by direct illumination with a so-called reflective display element improves the contrast formation of the display characters, but it is very poor and can only be achieved with a lot of additional effort.

The second possibility of a high-contrast display results from the use of so-called transflective display elements with translucent lighting arranged on the back.

The reflective LC displays have so far hardly been able to prevail for use in the dispenser area. The reason for this was the relatively large effort and an additional space requirement, which is not accepted by the users.

With the transflective LC displays, it should be noted for backlighting that all common petrol pump displays are always three-line numerical displays that are arranged in a common housing and that display the amount, quantity and basic price per unit of measure there are three separate LC display panels. It is therefore always necessary to illuminate three LC display panels in one display at the same time, if possible within an economically justifiable framework.

The aim is that display elements plus lighting be designed as a compact display device and as such can be installed and operated in practically any standard petrol pump.

Lighting devices for transflective LC displays are known which essentially consist of light systems with incandescent or halogen lamps or with light-emitting diodes and are mostly combined with complex optical light distribution devices. Such arrangements are quite useful for indoor applications; However, they have not proven themselves against the requirements in the rough operation of the petrol pumps, where they are exposed to extreme climatic influences and therefore have an extremely limited service life. Replacing the lighting elements in the known lighting systems is complex and often only feasible by trained personnel.

Since known lighting systems are only matched to the illumination of a single panel, the lighting effort for a dispenser display triples.

The lighting systems used for individual displays are never designed with a high degree of luminance in order to keep within certain limits greater expenditure for energy supply from the power supply unit and any heat radiation that may occur.

When using LC displays in petrol pumps, in order to set the optimal readability of the displayed digits, it is necessary for the LC display elements to be illuminated reliably and appropriately vigorously over all daytime-related lighting conditions, with the aim of displaying the activated drawing elements in high contrast. The problem-free reading must be possible in the present application in particular with any type of additional gas station lighting and above all also from distances between approx. 1 m and 5 m, since these distances result from the different positions of the vehicles when filling.

Solutions with transflective LC displays in petrol pumps, which are illuminated by a fluorescent tube, are also known. In these applications, however, the fluorescent tube is arranged at a very large distance from the LC display and is additionally accommodated in a large-volume reflector which is designed according to the laws of optical beam paths in order to illuminate the LC displays as evenly as possible. This form of solution naturally requires a very large amount of space and a high production outlay. Such an illuminated and elaborately designed display does not fit into the previous dispenser housing, which would mean that almost all dispenser housings have to be redesigned in order to use an LC display of the type mentioned at the outset. With the known solution, only two LC panels, as a rule the information for amount and quantity, can also be illuminated with one lighting element, while the third display line receives insufficient background light or has to be illuminated by a further light source.

The object of the invention is to provide a lighting device for an LC display device of the type described at the outset that meets the requirements of the petrol pumps with simple means and economically justifiable effort and taking into account the previous display geometry and installation method.

The solution to this problem is that for the arrangement of the three liquid crystal display panels, a printed circuit board is provided which, according to the arrangement and size of the liquid crystal displays, has area-like recesses for the passage of light generated in the background by a central light source and from backward incident light that an inhomogeneous diffusing screen is provided between the light source and the liquid crystal display panels, so that background light of uniform intensity is incident on all liquid crystal display panels.

Because of the design of the display device and the design of the backlight, it is sufficient to provide a commercially available fluorescent tube as the lighting element as the central light source directly behind the liquid crystal displays arranged one below the other in three rows. A single fluorescent tube for three LC displays represents only a small load on the power supply unit compared to the otherwise usual arrangement of three separate lighting elements for the three display panels of a display device and is therefore far less expensive to implement. Compared to backlighting with incandescent lamps of comparable brightness, only a quarter of the power consumption is required with less heat loss.

The arrangement of cutouts in the size of the liquid crystal elements means that the light from the backward incidence can be adjusted in the required illuminance for each area in such a way that uniform contrast is formed on all three display lines. To set the same illuminance, an inhomogeneous optical lens is used between the light source and the LC display panels, which allows the light from the only light source to strike the back of the LC display panels with absolutely uniform intensity. This can be achieved by determining the actually existing lighting conditions by means of a photographic recording process and quasi transferring the result of the inhomogeneous black coloring on the negative film to a so-called diffusing screen using a screen printing process. This procedure results in a screen printing density on the diffusing screen, which, measured by the illuminance behind the three LC display panels, allows a correspondingly adjusted, uniform luminous intensity to strike the LC displays through the diffusing screen. Due to the background light of the same intensity that can be achieved with the diffusing screen, the contrast formation with regard to the representation of the activated characters is consistently the same on all three display panels. As a result, an optimal display image can be set with the backlight setting according to the invention.

The type of arrangement of LC elements, lens and light source allows a densely packed and therefore extremely flat design, so that the display device can be used while maintaining all previous dispenser housing shapes and is interchangeable with all previous, non-illuminated display devices.

An exemplary embodiment of a fuel dispenser display device is described below with reference to the drawings. It shows
  • 1 is a front view of a dispenser display device of the type referred to,
  • FIG. 2 shows a schematic sectional view through the display device according to FIG. 1,
  • Fig. 3 is a schematic plan view of a diffuser designed for example with a screen printing pad.

Das Anzeigeelement für einen Grundpreis 20 besteht aus vier Ziffern mit einer durch ein Komma 17 markierten Kennzeichnung der Pfennig- und 1/10 Pfennig-Einheiten.1 shows a front view of a fuel dispenser display device as it is arranged according to the arrangement of three among one another inserted display lines as the standard display. Each display line consists of a multi-digit, separate liquid crystal display panel or LCD 2, 3, 4, and each line is assigned a meaning assigned to it by a corresponding imprint on a housing cover plate 13. Three windows 14, 15, 16 provided in the cover plate 13 provide a clear view of the display elements using transflective LC technology, the seven bars being shown in a seven-segment arrangement due to the inventive construction of the backlight after activation with very good contrast and are easy to read regardless of the ambient light. In the windows 14 and 15, a number consisting of five digits can be activated during a fuel withdrawal process for the indication of an amount 18 (e.g. in DM) or a number of delivery quantity units 19 (for example in 1 = liter). The information in window 16 relates to a basic price per unit of quantity of the fuel type selected in each case. The positioning of the commas 17 can be set at the intended location via a key module (not shown in detail) at the start of the start-up. The display element for a base price 20 consists of four digits with a comma 17 marking the pfennig and 1/10 pfennig units.

As shown in FIG. 2, the three transflective LCD panels 2, 3, 4 are mounted on a printed circuit board 1 as a carrier element, which is accommodated on fastening pillars 11 in a trough-shaped housing 5. Corresponding to the arrangement and size of the liquid crystal displays 2, 3, 4, area-like recesses 21, 22, 23 are provided in the printed circuit board 1, which are generated by backwards onto the liquid crystal display panels 2, 3 by a central light source 6 in the background of the housing 5 , 4 let incident light through. The central light source 6 is arranged behind the central liquid crystal display panel 3 and consists of a commercially available fluorescent tube 24, which in turn is mounted on a carrier plate 7. The complete lighting unit consisting of fluorescent tube 24 and support plate 7 is arranged for assembly or replacement of the fluorescent tube 24 through a cutout 25 in the bottom of the housing 5 and can be removed and secured with screws 26 or a clamp lock. A cable 8 led to the rear leads to the power supply to a ballast, not shown.

In order to display the numbers and characters of the three transflective LCD panels 2, 3, 4 in a uniform, high-contrast image on the display side, it is necessary to ensure that the background space is illuminated as evenly as possible directly behind the LCD panels 2, 3, 4 . For this purpose, the housing inner wall 5/1 is designed with a light-reflecting color layer 27, which serves to intensify the illumination. On the other hand, a light-distributing diffuser 9 is inserted between the light source 6 and the printed circuit board 1 and is arranged as spatially as possible behind the LCD panels 2, 3, 4. The diffusing screen 9 is held in four tabs 10 stamped out of the housing 5 and is fixed in the installed position by the fastening pillars 11. The diffusing screen 9 can be a transparent, correspondingly colored glass or plastic pane, which ultimately serves for a light distribution explained below. In any case, the aim in the example shown must be to convert the beam path of a rod-shaped light source 6 into a homogeneous background light behind the LCD panels 2, 3, 4 by the action of the diffusing screen 9.

According to the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 2, depending on the position and design of the light source 6, the panel 3 in the immediate vicinity of the light source 6 is the most illuminated display field. In order to compensate for the different illuminance levels or to convert them into an absolutely uniform lighting field, a negative image of the illuminated areas is taken using a photographic process, so that one can literally get an exact "light image" related to the light distribution including all possible shading receives. The light or brightness structure that can be achieved in this way in the form of an image is converted into a printing screen by means of a graphic process, whereby very narrow meshes are obtained for the strongly exposed areas and gradually widened meshes for the less exposed areas.

In Fig. 3 an attempt is made to represent the density of the screen printing by a schematic representation of lines 29. Correspondingly, in the area of the arrangement of the fluorescent tube 24, there is a screen print 12 overlay with a higher density (represented by more and thicker lines) and with an increasing distance from the light source 9 (with fewer and thinner lines) an overlay with a lower density. A achievable in this way screen print 12 edition of different density is applied to a transparent glass or plastic pane 28, and this results in a diffuser 9, which due to the different screen print density fades out excess or uneven brightness, so that from the Diffuser 9 emerging illuminance of homogeneous brightness and as background light, the three transflective LCD panels 2, 3, 4 be absolutely even shines. Because an absolutely homogeneous light density is generated both over the area of an LCD display 2, 3 or 4 and over the entire background area of all three LC displays 2, 3, 4, the readable in the three display windows 14, 15, 16 appear Numbers and characters in an optimally uniform and high-contrast image.

In the manner described, a single diffuser 9 with correspondingly applied screen printing zones can be produced for all three LC displays; on the other hand, it is also possible to produce individual smaller diffusing disks 9, each of which is provided with an adapted screen printing pad in accordance with its assignment to one of the three LC displays 2, 3 or 4 in adaptation to the lighting state present there.
