Abstract

The cushion, mat, mattress or the like has an elastic insert (1), a covering (2; 2', 2"), which surrounds said insert and is made of a material which is impervious to air, and an air closure of the cushion interior. Whilst maintaining the functional advantages of such a cushion, it is to be simplified both in manufacture and in handling. For this purpose, provision is made for the insert (1) to be compressed to a fraction (b) of the thickness (a) which it has in the unstressed state, for the covering (2; 2', 2") to rest essentially on the insert and, without the use of a valve, to form the air closure of the cushion interior merely by its material on all sides. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method of manufacturing such a cushion. <IMAGE>

Description

The invention initially relates to a cushion, mat, mattress or the like (hereinafter referred to as "cushion") according to the preamble of claim 1. Such cushions are known in principle, for example, from DE-PS 99773. They are also known in the form of a so-called ring pillow. The airtight closure takes place with the aid of a valve which is inserted into the casing and can be opened or closed as desired. When the valve is open, the cushion can be compressed by a certain amount, the corresponding portion of the air in the cushion being pressed out by the opened valve. If the valve is then closed, the upholstery with the compressed insert maintains approximately its shape, since a re-expansion of the insert is opposed by the negative air pressure inside the upholstery. This pad has proven itself functionally. Disadvantages are the higher production costs due to the manufacture and introduction of the valve, as well as the risk that the valve will tear off due to improper handling, at least at its connection point the cover can tear (which would make the cushion unusable) and finally that clumsy people, especially people who are disabled due to age or infirmity, cannot cope with the handling (opening and closing) of the valve.

The invention intends to design a cushion according to the preamble of claim 1 in such a way that, while maintaining its functional advantages, simplification is achieved both in manufacture and in handling.

The solution to this problem, starting from the preamble of claim 1, serve the features of the characterizing part of claim 1. All the disadvantages of the known upholstery described are avoided. A cushion with partially compressed insert is created, which forms a relatively hard, but in certain limits still resilient seat shell. In many cases, this is not only advantageous but also desirable in which a compressible foam insert with any coating would be too soft and compliant.

The features of claim 2 include a preferred embodiment of the invention.

A further possible embodiment of the invention is the subject of claim 3. In this way, if desired, a cooling effect can be achieved with such a cushion. Another advantage is that the specific weight of such a pad, partially filled with a flowable medium (eg water or gel), is greater, so that it does not float as strongly when used in a bathtub, if necessary. even drops.

Die Ansprüche 4 und 5 beinhalten Ausgestaltungsmöglichkeiten der Einlage.Claims 4 and 5 contain design options for the insert.

The invention further includes according to claim 6 a method for producing such a cushion.

  • Fig. 2: die Draufsicht auf Fig. 1,
Further advantages and features of the invention can be found in the following description and the associated drawing of possible embodiments according to the invention. The drawing shows:
  • 1: in section along the line II in Fig. 2, a cushion according to the invention,
  • 2: the top view of FIG. 1,
  • Fig. 3: the cushion of Fig. 1, 2 with a not completely closed cover.

The cushion consists of a partially compressed elastic insert 1 and an all-round airtight covering 2 surrounding this insert, which essentially bears against the insert. These can be two webs 2 ', 2˝, which are connected to one another in an airtight manner along their circumferential edges 2, preferably welded. The manufacture of such a cushion is very simple. First, take the non-compressed insert 1 (see Fig. 3) and surround it with the two wrapping halves 2 ', 2˝, one side, for example the numbered 4 in Fig. 3 and the right side there is not yet airtight . Then the compression takes place the insert 1, for example according to a preferred embodiment of the invention by about 60 percent, and at the same time welding the edges 3 on the side 4. The thickness of the insert 1 thus decreases from the amount a of the uncompressed state and in the compressed area the smaller amount b (see Fig. 1). The insert of this cushion (see FIGS. 1, 2) is and remains compressed accordingly, which is also indicated in the drawing by the hatching which is denser than that in FIG. 3. It forms a kind of seat shell, which is relatively firm and resistant, ie only has a low elasticity. There is the further advantage that the shape of this seat shell once achieved can be easily changed by appropriate pressure on the surface of the upper envelope half 2 '. However, a re-expansion of the insert 1 to the thickness a according to FIG. 3 is not possible, since with the compression of the insert 1 to the thickness b according to FIG. 1 and the resulting reduction in the space within the envelope 2 ', 2˝ the entire interior of the upholstery is reduced accordingly and is also airtight. A re-expansion of the insert would lead to an enlargement of this interior. This is countered by the external air pressure in connection with the internal negative pressure. The "seat shell" thus formed is retained even if no person is sitting on this cushion. On the other hand, the "seat shell" can be brought into a different shape by pressure (as mentioned above), for example if another person with different body shapes sits on the cushion. If before standing, for example, sitting or a "seat shell", the invention is not limited to this. For example, a cushion according to the invention can also be designed as a mattress and the like.

For special cases, which have already been mentioned above, the interior of the cushion can also be partially filled with a liquid, preferably water (not shown). The airtight cover prevents the liquid from escaping.

The elastic insert 1 can be an elastic foam, but also another elastically compressible material, e.g. Rubber fibers.
