Abstract

Labels are described which are made from paper, aluminium, plastic film or combinations thereof, which are removable mechanically and by machine from glass and/or plastic bottles or other commercial articles of all types, such as bottle crates or the like. For this purpose, the labels are provided with at least one substance which can be activated to adhere to the article. A distinction is made between a first substance, which makes the mechanical removal possible, and a second substance which is applied to the back thereof and possesses adhesion-promoting properties. The first substance is a release layer which is proof against water of condensation and has a particular solids content and a processing viscosity which is selected in a defined manner. The second substance, which imparts adhesive properties, is applied in the form of a gluing pattern, with a glue pallet offset backward along the edges of the label, in such a manner that removal forces are obtained for the label of between 2 and 8 Newtons. <IMAGE>

Description

(DE-OS 35 08 150)The invention relates to a mechanically detachable label made of paper, aluminum, plastic film or compositions thereof for application to glass and / or plastic bottles or for the identification of tradable objects of all kinds, such as bottle crates or the like, with at least one for adhesion to the object activatable substance which contains a first substance which can be incorporated into the label material and / or which can be applied to the rear side and which enables mechanical detachment, and a second substance which is applied to its rear side and which has adhesion promoter properties. (DE-OS 35 08 150)

Such labels are widely used as stomach and breast labels, but also as back labels and neck foils, particularly in the beverage market. The high filling speed, for example of beer bottles with up to 70,000 bottles per hour, the extremely different weather conditions to which such bottles are exposed, and the tougher environmental conditions in connection with the cleaning of the bottled goods put a strain on both the labels themselves and their printing and gluing very high requirements in many respects.

The latter problem in particular, that is, the bottle cleaning of the empties returning to a beer brewery, for example, shows a wide range of difficulties and tasks that ranges from heavy metal disposal to special handling of dirt loads, lye sedimentation and lye neutralization to waste water disposal with its complex cellulose fiber disposal. The known developments of improved paper quality, the use of special printing processes and the selection of suitable and environmentally friendly printing inks have so far not brought about a solution breakthrough.

For promotional purposes, for example, hand-peelable labels are known, the advertising objective of which is also mediated via the back of the label, such labels having specially coated backside coatings which ensure mechanical detachment from a glass bottle, but with a relatively slow pull-off speed.

This known prior art is not suitable for high-speed processes of the type mentioned at the outset, which apply not only to the filling process and therefore to the labeling of bottles, but also to the label detachment in the case of the empties flowing back.

On the other hand, a device has been proposed which enables the mechanical detachment of labels, in particular bottles, even and particularly under the extreme conditions in breweries. The mechanical detachment takes place here before the bottles are brought into contact with liquid, namely the usual wash liquor, which results in a multitude of advantages (DE-OS 37 13 811).

The dry removal of labels before the actual wet washing process significantly reduces the previous alkali loss, extends the possible alkali service life, leads to considerable energy savings for the overall cleaning process, facilitates the disposal of labels, which can now be carried out without any problems as with normal waste paper disposal, and thus reduces in addition to a considerable amount Shortening the overall process flow, the environmental problems that have so far only been able to be managed with great effort.

Special preparation properties of the back of the label or the label material itself are essential for such a dry disposal. The previously known initial attempts under the brewery conditions mentioned had not yet led to conclusive findings.

This is where the present invention comes in, which is based on the task of carrying out the preparation properties and the interacting design of the back of the label in such a way that the mechanical drying process with the machines provided for this purpose makes it possible to remove the labels safely with practically negligible residual impurities.

This object is achieved according to the invention by the features specified in the characterizing part of claim 1.

Die Unteransprüche geben vorteilhafte Ausgestaltungen dieser Aufgabenlösung an.The subclaims indicate advantageous configurations of this task solution.

The so equipped, i.e. Labels with special preparation and detaching properties can be removed from bottles but also bottle crates and other objects in the dry state by means of brush machines and water-spraying machines or the like, almost without residue, and at throughput speeds that do correspond to the filling and thus the labeling speed.

In the classic labeling of bottles, the procedure is such that the labels held in the bundle in the labeling machine, on the back of which are not specially prepared for re-detachment, are individually glued on the back by feeding a liquid adhesive to a glue station via a glue roller, which is then transferred to glue pallets. The glue pallets are then guided to the label magazine via an associated pallet carousel. Due to the glue film on the glue pallets, the labels in the label magazine with the back facing the glue pallet are individually removed and fed together with the movement of the glue pallet to a gripper which intermittently takes over the labels. By pulling the labels off the respective glue pallet, a glue splitting takes place between the back of the label and the pallet, so that the labels carry enough adhesive on their back. The gripper cylinder transports the glued labels to a bottle table, where they are blown air and sponges transfer the labels to the bottles and hold them there. In the further course of the process, the bottles then pass through soft brush or sponge pressure surfaces in a pressing section in order to subsequently be released. The back coating according to the present invention with the two fabric components that are tailored to special release properties not only results in a problem-free labeling in an advantageous manner, but also shows a high weather resistance for the durability of the label before the bottle return, which is suitable for the temperatures and Moisture is also suitable in extreme weather conditions. In addition to a considerable saving in alkali for the liquid washing process which follows the mechanical dry detachment, it is also shown that the previously usual alkali concentration can also be considerably reduced, as can the washing temperature at which the bottle is cleaned.

Good paper smoothness, especially for printability, is a prerequisite and essential requirement for the starting material, as is good flatness for problem-free labeling, as is weather resistance with regard to light, sun and rain in a temperature range of at least minus 25 ° C to plus 65 ° C. The already mentioned condensation resistance means that a detachment or only a detachment of the label, and here in particular the above-mentioned back coating by condensation water, may not occur under any circumstances, but nevertheless the penetration of the label for the damp delivery of activity from the back to the front and thus must be guaranteed for the required drying process. For the drying times for cold and wet filling of bottles, which is known to take place at approx. 2 ° C, times between 20 and 48 hours are specified, depending on the storage conditions. In addition, the separating layer must be such that the glue applied to it in no way dissolves or even penetrates this coating medium, since otherwise an adhesion to the paper fiber which is to be prevented under all circumstances takes place and the desired mechanical detachment is no longer possible. The two substances, i.e. the release medium and the adhesion promoter or the glue layer, on the one hand, must be inert to one another, so they must not show any additional chemical reactions or undesirable mixtures, but on the other hand, they must not repel each other, i.e., for example Behave water and oil.

The gluing image of the labels, which is shown in a preferred embodiment in FIG. 1, is also important and essential. It is particularly important here that the glue does not come into contact with the cut edges of the label, since otherwise the paper fiber is bonded precisely in this area. In addition to the change in the glue palette necessary for the function to specify such a gluing pattern, the glue consumption can be further reduced as a result. As shown in FIG. 1, the gluing pattern or the glue pallet L is set back around the entire circumferential edge of the label B, practical values of 2 to 5 mm seem reasonable, the middle one The area between the upper and lower gripper recesses G is set back by a further 2 mm. Otherwise, as shown, the gluing consists of screened individual gluing fields, which are delimited by glue-free webs running parallel to the longitudinal direction and parallel to the transverse direction. Preferably, the glue-free webs each run at the level of the gripper recesses that were already provided in the previously known gluing operations.

In the exemplary embodiment according to FIG. 1, the separating medium is evenly distributed over the entire back of the label, and is not based on the specified gluing pattern. As the schematic representation according to FIG. 2 shows, so-called predetermined gluing points in the form of points arranged in a grid can also be specified for the separation medium, i.e. Openings in the backside release agent coating through which the glue application reaches the fiber structure of the label material itself. Such predetermined gluing points are desired for a number of applications, in particular for checking purposes.
