Definitions
- the invention relates to an incubator for maintaining a warm environment for small children, consisting of an essentially elongated lying surface, which is enclosed by a hood, from which at least one side wall is designed as a front side provided with closable access openings, with an air outlet for in the edge region of the lying surface the air supply in the hood and an air inlet for the air discharge from the hood are arranged.
- Such incubators are used to accommodate toddlers or even premature and newborn babies in order to isolate them in a protected atmosphere.
- the incubator air should be adjustable and maintainable with respect to temperature, oxygen content and air humidity within certain limits. Particularly high demands are placed on the temperature stability and the uniform temperature distribution in the area of the lying surface. This applies both when the incubator is closed and during the necessary treatment measures to be carried out on the patient, for which the openings provided for this purpose, such as handle openings or larger flaps, must be opened.
- the heat supplied to the interior of the incubator should then only escape to the colder surroundings to the least possible extent, and the heat loss due to convection or radiant heat should also be as low as possible even when closed.
- a known incubator according to DE-OS 31 00 932 has a rectangular lying surface within a hood, at the top and bottom of which an air outlet or an air inlet is provided. Heated air is blown into the interior of the hood from the air outlet via a circulating unit and extracted via the air inlet at the foot end. The circulating warm air is distributed in the lying area and is supposed to maintain a constant temperature there. On the long side of the hood there is a larger flap with hand opening, which can be opened in the vertical direction and swiveled away completely. When the front flap is open, an additional air outlet for the heated incubator air is exposed, which extends completely along the long side of the lying surface. The warm incubator air now emerges both at the head end and at the newly opened air outlet along the long side of the front flap and is drawn off via the air inlet remaining at the foot end.
- a warm air curtain is to be created when the front flap is open, which should prevent an air exchange with the surroundings.
- Such an air curtain is achieved only imperfectly by the known warm air guidance, because hot air is now blown out of two air outlet openings, the flow paths of which cross each other, so that a closed air circulation between the two air outlets and the only air inlet at the foot end can no longer form. Rather, incorrect air is sucked in through the open front flap and warm air is pressed out of the interior of the incubator accordingly. This causes a noticeable disturbance in the temperature balance in the interior of the incubator, and there is a significant drop in the temperature level in the area of the lying surface.
- the front air outlet remains closed and no warm air curtain is formed, so that cold air from the surroundings can penetrate into the interior of the incubator.
- Another known incubator according to EP-A 32 133 has a cylindrical double-shell hood, which is divided into segments along the cylinder axis, the warm air being blown into the space between the double wall via an air outlet at the rear of the hood and out at the front when the hood is closed the intermediate space is suctioned off again.
- Several openings in the inner shell of the double-walled hood allow a small proportion of the warm air to enter the interior of the hood. When the front is open, the air circulation between the hood shells is interrupted, so that all of the warm air is blown into the interior of the hood via the openings in the inner shell.
- the present invention is therefore based on the object of improving an incubator of the type mentioned in such a way that the air flow to maintain a stable incubator air temperature when the hood is closed reduces heat losses due to convection and radiation and favors the construction of a stable warm air curtain when the front is fully or partially open.
- the advantage of the invention lies essentially in the fact that the air outlet velocity and air inlet extending along the long sides can substantially reduce the air flow velocity, so that as little air turbulence as possible occurs within the incubator at the point where the patient is, and thus as possible little heat loss due to air convection occurs.
- the amount of air required for stable air temperature control can nevertheless be circulated to a sufficient extent. Even when the access openings on the front are open, there is only a very small heat loss, since the air curtain rises on the inside along the closed front and is sucked off through the air inlet on the back.
- the front and the back are designed as a double wall open in their edge area and the air outlet and the air inlet open into the space between the double wall.
- a directional air flow curtain is thereby achieved which moves within the spaces between the double walls and thus creates a warming insulation layer on the large wall parts of the incubator hood.
- guide ribs are provided at the air outlet. These cause the heated incubator air to have the same flow rate at every point in the air outlet Swipe past vertically upwards along the inner surface of the front, or flow freely vertically upwards with the front flap open, forming a stable warm air curtain.
- the incubator shown in section in Fig. 1 has a housing (1) for receiving various units, of which only the fan (2) with its drive motor (3) and the heater (4) with its supply unit (5) are shown.
- the housing (1) is separated from the incubator interior (6) by a lying surface (7).
- the lying surface (7) carries a bed (9) for supporting the toddler, not shown, via supports (8).
- the interior (6) is enclosed with a hood (10) that is transparent on all sides.
- On the front of the hood (10) there is a front flap (13) held by hinges (11) and closures (12), which can be opened completely downwards around its hinges (11).
- Both in the front flap (13) and on the rear (14) of the hood (10) there are access openings (16) which can be closed with flaps (15).
- a short distance from the inner surfaces of the front flap (13) and the rear (14) are double walls (18,19) attached, which also have the passage openings (16) opposite passage openings (16 ').
- the double walls (18, 19) are connected to the front flap (13) or the rear side (14) via spacers (20). When the front flap (13) is opened, the double wall (18) is also pivoted.
- the air outlet (21) is located between the long side of the lying surface (7) and the front side of the incubator provided with the front flap (13).
- the air inlet (22) is located on the rear of the incubator between the rear wall (14) and the lying surface (7).
- the interior air is passed via the air inlet (22) to the fan (2) in the guide channel (23) and is conveyed from there along the heater (4), the air being heated to the desired temperature value.
- the heated air enters the incubator interior (6) from the air outlet (21). It is distributed evenly along the air outlet (21) via guide ribs (24) and directed vertically upwards.
- the air flow along the front flap (13) and along the back (14) runs in the direction shown by the arrows (25) in the spaces between the front flap (13) and the double wall (18) or rear wall (14) and Double wall (19) While the heated air flows through the top of the hood (10), the warm air is swirled slightly into the interior of the incubator, so that the heated air reaches the area of the bed (9).
- a partial area of the air outlet (21) is shown enlarged in different sections.
- the air delivered by the fan (2) via the heater (4) is blown into the air outlet (21) through the channels (26) between the guide ribs (24).
- the arrangement of the guide ribs (24) is selected such that the heated air flows into the air outlet (21) at a right angle.
- the cross-section of the channels (26) formed between the lying surface (7) and the housing (1) is designed in such a way that the heated air flows evenly into the air outlet (21) with respect to the flow rate and quantity.

Description
The invention relates to an incubator for maintaining a warm environment for small children, consisting of an essentially elongated lying surface, which is enclosed by a hood, from which at least one side wall is designed as a front side provided with closable access openings, with an air outlet for in the edge region of the lying surface the air supply in the hood and an air inlet for the air discharge from the hood are arranged.
Such incubators are used to accommodate toddlers or even premature and newborn babies in order to isolate them in a protected atmosphere. The incubator air should be adjustable and maintainable with respect to temperature, oxygen content and air humidity within certain limits. The heat supplied to the interior of the incubator should then only escape to the colder surroundings to the least possible extent, and the heat loss due to convection or radiant heat should also be as low as possible even when closed.
A known incubator according to DE-OS 31 00 932 has a rectangular lying surface within a hood, at the top and bottom of which an air outlet or an air inlet is provided.
In the known incubator, a warm air curtain is to be created when the front flap is open, which should prevent an air exchange with the surroundings. Such an air curtain is achieved only imperfectly by the known warm air guidance, because hot air is now blown out of two air outlet openings, the flow paths of which cross each other, so that a closed air circulation between the two air outlets and the only air inlet at the foot end can no longer form. Rather, incorrect air is sucked in through the open front flap and warm air is pressed out of the interior of the incubator accordingly. This causes a noticeable disturbance in the temperature balance in the interior of the incubator, and there is a significant drop in the temperature level in the area of the lying surface.
Even when the front panel is closed (and thus the air curtain on the front is eliminated), the known air routing does not achieve the desired reduction in the child's heat loss through radiant heat. The outflowing warm air only warms up the relatively small-area end faces of the incubator hood, whereas the large and colder front and back of the hood still causes considerable radiation heat loss.
If the front is closed and the handle openings located in it are open, the front air outlet remains closed and no warm air curtain is formed, so that cold air from the surroundings can penetrate into the interior of the incubator.
Another known incubator according to EP-A 32 133 has a cylindrical double-shell hood, which is divided into segments along the cylinder axis, the warm air being blown into the space between the double wall via an air outlet at the rear of the hood and out at the front when the hood is closed the intermediate space is suctioned off again. Several openings in the inner shell of the double-walled hood allow a small proportion of the warm air to enter the interior of the hood. When the front is open, the air circulation between the hood shells is interrupted, so that all of the warm air is blown into the interior of the hood via the openings in the inner shell. Since the air inlet along the front is now completely open to the environment, cold ambient air is drawn in in addition to the warm incubator air, and a large part of the warm incubator air exits into the cold environment. Here too is a slump Incubator temperature result, which leads to a significant convection heat loss for the patient in the incubator. When the front is completely opened, the heated incubator air escapes completely into the environment, and maintaining the air temperature once set is no longer guaranteed.
The present invention is therefore based on the object of improving an incubator of the type mentioned in such a way that the air flow to maintain a stable incubator air temperature when the hood is closed reduces heat losses due to convection and radiation and favors the construction of a stable warm air curtain when the front is fully or partially open.
The solution to the stated problem results from the fact that the air outlet is arranged along the front side and the air inlet along the opposite rear side.
The advantage of the invention lies essentially in the fact that the air outlet velocity and air inlet extending along the long sides can substantially reduce the air flow velocity, so that as little air turbulence as possible occurs within the incubator at the point where the patient is, and thus as possible little heat loss due to air convection occurs. The amount of air required for stable air temperature control can nevertheless be circulated to a sufficient extent. Even when the access openings on the front are open, there is only a very small heat loss, since the air curtain rises on the inside along the closed front and is sucked off through the air inlet on the back.
Even when the front is fully open, closed air circulation in the interior of the incubator is maintained, and the intake of incorrect air from the surroundings is of no importance for maintaining a stable air temperature in the interior. In addition, a mechanically complex control mechanism for deflecting the air duct when the front flap is fully open is avoided.
To further increase the thermal insulation of the interior of the incubator from the surroundings, it can be provided that the front and the back are designed as a double wall open in their edge area and the air outlet and the air inlet open into the space between the double wall. A directional air flow curtain is thereby achieved which moves within the spaces between the double walls and thus creates a warming insulation layer on the large wall parts of the incubator hood.
In a development of the invention, it is advantageous to leave the edge region of the double wall open only on the side opposite the air outlet or the air inlet. As a result, an even more targeted alignment of the air flow within the double wall is achieved, and the circulating air is guided essentially along the hood, while the child's lying area is now in a calming zone.
In order to achieve a constant air flow that runs evenly along the air outlet, guide ribs are provided at the air outlet. These cause the heated incubator air to have the same flow rate at every point in the air outlet Swipe past vertically upwards along the inner surface of the front, or flow freely vertically upwards with the front flap open, forming a stable warm air curtain.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated by the schematic drawing and is explained in more detail below.

Der Querschnitt der zwischen Liegefläche (7) und Gehäuse (1) gebildeten Kanäle (26) ist derart ausgestaltet, daß die angewärmte Luft in bezug auf Strömungsgeschwindigkeit und Menge gleichmäßig in den Luftauslaß (21) einströmt.2 and 3, a partial area of the air outlet (21) is shown enlarged in different sections. The air delivered by the fan (2) via the heater (4) is blown into the air outlet (21) through the channels (26) between the guide ribs (24). The arrangement of the guide ribs (24) is selected such that the heated air flows into the air outlet (21) at a right angle. The cross-section of the channels (26) formed between the lying surface (7) and the housing (1) is designed in such a way that the heated air flows evenly into the air outlet (21) with respect to the flow rate and quantity.
