Tout appareil électrique se trouvant dans cette zone et susceptible de produire des étincelles doit être hermétiquement fermé. Il n'est dès lors pas possible de monter un lecteur de billets de type connu dans cette zone, un tel lecteur n'étant pas hermétique en raison de l'ouverture prévue pour l'introduction des billets, sans compter l'ouverture nécessaire pour l'émission d'une quittance. En outre, autour et au-dessus de la colonne s'étend une zone dans laquelle il peut également se produire, bien que rarement un danger d'explosion. Pour cette raison un lecteur de billets est monté dans une colonne indépendante située à une certaine distance de la colonne distributrice, de telle sorte que l'entrée des billets se trouve en dehors de la zone interdite entourant la colonne de distribution.
