Abstract

Schlichtemittel bestehend aus Polyvinylalkohol und Polyglycerin.Sizing agents consisting of polyvinyl alcohol and polyglycerin.

Description

Sizing hydrophilic fibers, e.g. Cellulose with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is well known in the art. In particular, polyvinyl alcohols with different degrees of saponification, i.e. different levels of residual acetyl, have proven themselves in practice as sizing agents. Difficulties arise when sizing hydrophobic fibers, such as polyester, with polyvinyl alcohol, since the sizing film on these fibers is very brittle and can therefore cause weaving errors due to splinters during weaving. "C.A. Finch, Polyvinylalkohol, 1973 p. 260 ff" therefore describes a combined sizing agent for polyester, which consists of polyvinyl alcohol and polyacrylate. The admixed acrylate size adheres very well to polyester, but causes an undesirable increase in the hygroscopicity of the size film on the fiber. It was therefore the task to find better additives that ensure optimal sizing of synthetic fibers with polyvinyl alcohol.

It has now been found that sizes from polyvinyl alcohol can be made flexible and soft, so that they can be used well for the size of synthetic fibers, in particular polyester, if a polyglycerol is added to the polyvinyl alcohol size.

Die Konzentration des Schlichtemittels, also der Mischung von Polyvinylalkohol und Polyglycerin, in der Schlichteflotte beträgt üblicherweise 2 bis 20 Gew.%.For the sizing agent according to the invention, polyvinyl alcohol with the lowest possible viscosity is used, e.g. Types with a residual acetyl content of 1 to 15% and a viscosity of 4 - 18 m Pas, measured at 20 ° C on a 4% aqueous solution. The polyglycerols are known from Fieser and Fieser, Organic Chemistry 1968, p. 1230. These polyglycerols are preferably added to the hot, aqueous liquor of polyvinyl alcohol. The concentration of the sizing agent, that is to say the mixture of polyvinyl alcohol and polyglycerol, in the sizing liquor is usually 2 to 20% by weight.

In addition to polyvinyl alcohol and polyglycerol, the sizing liquor can also contain other additives such as emulsified fats, mineral oils, antioxidants, starch, starch ether, etc. be added. The sizing agent according to the invention is outstandingly suitable for sizing hydrophobic synthetic fibers, such as polyacrylonitrile, polypropylene and in particular polyester, and also mixtures of these fibers with native fibers or cellulose-2 1/2 acetate or cellulose triacetate fibers. The amount of sizing agent on the yarn is within the usual limits in practice, for example 6 to 8% by weight for a chain made of textured polyester fibers.

After drying, the addition of the polyglycerols gives clear size films of high flexibility. The poly clycerins do not exude from the dried films and do not increase their hygroscopicity, but they do increase the adhesive strength of the PVAL coatings.
