Dabei wird bereits beim Verbindungsaufbau über die Basisstation festgelegt, ob und in welcher Weise die Verschlüsselung durchgeführt werden soll, dazu wird im Endgerät eine dort vorgesehene Schlüsseleinrichtung, mit welcher die empfangenen Informationen entschlüsselt und die auszusendenden Informationen verschlüsselt werden, entsprechend aktiviert. Da verschiedene Netzbetreiber eines solchen umfassenden Kommunikationssystems keine solche Verschlüsselungsmöglichkeiten haben und manche Endgeräte eines solchen Systems oftmals nicht für eine Verschlüsselung eingerichtet sind, also keine entsprechenden Schlüsseleinrichtungen aufweisen, erfolgt der Informationsaustausch in solchen Systemen wahlweise verschlüsselt oder unverschlüsselt, was für den Benutzer eines Endgerätes aber nicht erkennbar ist, so daß er seinen Informationsaustausch nicht darauf einrichten kann.Transceiver terminals of this type are known (standard specification GSM, Technical Specifications, TS GSM 02.09 and TS GSM 12.03).
