Description
Die vorliegende Erfindung bezieht sich auf Golfbälle.
Genauer gesagt betrifft die Erfindung eine verbesserte
Golfballabdeckung, die für die Herstellung von Golfbällen,
insbesondere zweistückigen Golfbällen, geeignet ist, welche
besonders gute Spieleigenschaften aufweisen.
Seit vielen Jahren sind Balata und Mischungen aus Balata
mit verschiedenartigen Elastomeren oder Kunststoffmateria
lien die Hauptmaterialien, die bei der Herstellung von
Golfbällen bester Qualität verwendet werden. Balata-Ab
deckungen und Balata-enthaltende Abdeckungen besitzen die
wünschenswerten Eigenschaften, daß sie für Formvorgänge
besonders geeignet sind und daher in einfacher Weise um
einen speziellen Kern herum preßgeformt werden können, um
auf diese Weise Golfbälle hoher Qualität herzustellen.
Die besondere Weichheit einer Abdeckung aus Balata ist
insofern besonders vorteilhaft, als daß ein relativ er
fahrener Golfer einem mit einer Balata-Abdeckung versehenen
Ball ein "spin" aufprägen kann, um den Ball in seiner Flug
bahn zu steuern und hierdurch ein "draw" oder "fade" oder
"backspin" zu erzeugen, damit der Ball beim Kontakt mit dem
Grün abrupt stoppen kann. Solche Spieleigenschaften sind
besonders wichtig bei kurzen Schlägen, bei denen die
Genauigkeit wichtiger ist als eine möglichst große Schlag
weite. Sie werden daher insbesondere von den erfahreneren
Spielern ausgenutzt.
Mit Balata-Abdeckungen versehene Golfbälle besitzen jedoch
den Nachteil, daß sie sehr rasch bei Fehlschlägen Ein
schnitte erhalten können, so daß derartige Golfbälle eine
relativ kurze Lebensdauer besitzen.
Auf Grund dieser negativen Eigenschaft sind Balata und dessen
synthetische Ersatzstoffe Trans-Polybutadien sowie Trans-
Polyisopren heutzutage im wesentlichen durch neuartige Ab
deckungsmaterialien ersetzt worden, in erster Linie durch
ein Copolymerisat aus Äthylen und Methacrylsäure, das von der
Firma E. I. duPont de Nemours and Company unter dem Waren
zeichen SURLYN vertrieben wird. Die Neutralisation einer
Reihe der funktionellen Säuregruppen normalerweise in einem
Bereich von etwa 18 bis etwa 73% wird mit Metallionen,
beispielsweise Zink oder Natrium, durchgeführt, wodurch ein
thermoplastisches Material erzeugt wird, das diverse Vor
teile gegenüber Balata besitzt, wenn es als Abdeckmaterial
für Golfbälle verwendet wird.
Zusätzlich zu den Kostenersparnissen und der raschen Ver
fügbarkeit können die Eigenschaften von SURLYN gesteuert und
variiert werden, um Golfbälle mit unterschiedlichen Spiel
eigenschaften sowie anderen Eigenschaften zu erzeugen, die
in ihrer Härte, ihrem Schnittwiderstand, Scherwiderstand und
ihrer Elastizität gesteuert werden können. Diese Eigenschaf
ten können verändert werden durch Auswahl der geeigneten
Äthylen-Methycrylsäure-Verhältnisse, des Neutralisations
grades und des speziellen verwendeten Metallions.
Der Einsatz von SURLYN-Salzen von Poly(äthylen-Methacryl
säure) Copolymerisaten als Golfballabdeckungen ist zu einem
Hauptfaktor bei der Herstellung von zweistückigen Bällen
geworden, die im praktischen Einsatz beim Spiel keine Ein
schnitte erfahren und weiter geschlagen werden können als
andere Bälle nach der USGA-Regel, wie dies durch Kontroll
tests gemessen wurde. Hierbei bildet der Rückstellkoeffi
zient einen wichtigen Parameter, wobei erhöhte Werte zu
erhöhten Distanzen führen, über die sich der Ball bewegt.
Die Golfindustrie hat sich daher seit einer Reihe von Jahren
bemüht, eine Abdeckungszusammensetzung zu entwickeln, die
sowohl die Haltbarkeit der SURLYN-Salze der Poly(äthylen-
Methacrylsäure) Copolymerisate als auch erhöhte Rück
stellkoeffizienten aufweist.
Der Erfindung liegt die Aufgabe zugrunde, einen Golfball zu
schaffen, der gegenüber Einschnitten während des Spieles
widerstandsfähig ist und einen besonders hohen Rückstell
koeffizienten aufweist.
Erfindungsgemäß soll ferner ein Golfball zur Verfügung ge
stellt werden, der eine besonders lange Strecke zurücklegt,
wenn er mit einem Golfschläger geschlagen worden ist.
Des weiteren soll ein Golfball geschaffen werden, der eine
glänzende weiße Farbe besitzt und beim Altern nicht ver
gilbt. Schließlich soll eine Golfballabdeckungszusammen
setzung zur Verfügung gestellt werden, die in einfacher
Weise hergestellt werden kann.
Die vorstehend genannte Aufgabe wird erfindungsgemäß durch
einen Golfball gelöst, der einen Kern und eine Abdeckung
aufweist. Die Abdeckung umfaßt ein Ionomer, das sich zu etwa
10 bis etwa 90 Gew.-% aus einem Polyäthylen-Acrylsäure-
Copolymerisat zusammensetzt, das dadurch gekennzeichnet ist,
daß es etwa 10 Gew.-% Acrylsäure enthält, wobei etwa 40%
der Karbonsäuregruppen mit Natriumionen neutralisiert sind.
Die Ionomere bestehen ferner zu etwa 90 bis etwa 10 Gew.-%
aus mindestens einer Polyäthylen-Acrylsäure, die dadurch
gekennzeichnet ist, daß sie etwa 11 bis 16% Acrylsäure
enthält, von der etwa 10 bis etwa 40% der Karbonsäure
gruppen durch Zinkionen neutralisiert sind.
Ionomere, die mit Lithium, Magnesium oder anderen Metall
ionen neutralisiert sind, liegen ebenfalls im Rahmen dieser
Erfindung. Gemische aus den vorstehend erwähnten Ionomeren
können ebenfalls verwendet werden. Die Abdeckungszusammen
setzung kann des weiteren etwa 2,4 Gew.-% von bekannten
Additiven enthalten, beispielsweise Pigmenten, Glanzbildnern
u. ä.
Beispiele von Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisaten, die für
die Zwecke der Erfindung entweder allein oder als Mischungen
geeignet sind, sind Ionomere, die von der Firma Exxon
Chemical Company hergestellt werden und unter dem Waren
zeichen ESCOR als ESCOR 562, 900, 906, 4000 und 4200 ver
trieben werden.
Bei ESCOR 562 handelt es sich um ein mit Zink neutrali
siertes Copolymerisat von Äthylen und Acrylsäure, das
16 Gew.-% Acrlysäure, wobei 40% der Säuregruppen durch Zink
neutralisiert sind, enthält und durch einen Schmelzindex von
1,5 sowie eine Shore D Härte von 55 gekennzeichnet ist.
ESCOR 900 ist ein durch Natrium neutralisiertes Copolyme
risat von Äthylen und Acrylsäure, das 11 Gew.-% Acrylsäure
enthält, wobei 40% der Säuregruppen durch Natrium neutrali
siert sind, und das durch einen Schmelzindex von 0,8 und
eine Shore D Härte von 61 gekennzeichnet ist.
ESCOR 906 ist ein durch Zink neutralisiertes Copolymerisat
von Äthylen und Acrylsäure, das 16 Gew.-% Acrylsäure ent
hält, wobei 40% der Säuregruppen durch Zink neutralisiert
sind, und das durch einen Schmelzindex von 15 und eine Shore
D Härte von 52 gekennzeichnet ist.
ESCOR 4000 ist ein durch Zink neutralisiertes Copolymerisat
von Äthylen und Acrylsäure, das 16 Gew.-% Acrylsäure ent
hält, wobei 30% der Säuregruppen durch Zink neutralisiert
sind, und das durch einen Schmelzindex von 2,5 und eine
Shore D Härte von 55 gekennzeichnet ist.
ESCOR 4200 ist ein durch Zink neutralisiertes Copolymerisat
von Äthylen und Acrylsäure, das 11 Gew.-% Acrylsäure ent
hält, wobei 15% der Säuregruppen durch Zink neutralisiert
sind, und das durch einen Schmelzindex von 3,3 und eine
Shore D Härte von 50 gekennzeichnet ist.
Wie vorstehend in Verbindung mit einer Ausführungsform der
Erfindung beschrieben, können Mischungen aus Natrium- und
Zink-Ionomeren von Polyäthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisaten
als Abdeckungsmaterialien verwendet werden. Wenn solche
Mischungen aus Natrium- und Zink-Ionomeren eingesetzt
werden, kann das Verhältnis des Natrium-Ionomers zum Zink-
Ionomeren von etwa 90% bis etwa 10% und von etwa 10% bis
etwa 90% reichen. Ein bevorzugter Bereich beträgt etwa
75% bis etwa 25% und etwa 25% bis etwa 75%. Die be
vorzugteste Zusammensetzung setzt sich aus 50% Natrium-
Ionomer und 50% Zink-Ionomer zusammen.
Bei der Herstellung der neuartigen Abdeckungsmaterial
gemische der Erfindung kann das mit Natrium neutralisierte
Copolymerisat, vorzugsweise ESCOR 900, mit einem einzigen
mit Zink neutralisierten Copolymerisat, vorzugsweise ESCOR
4000 oder mit Mischungen des mit Zink neutralisierten
Copolymerisates innerhalb der vorstehend angegebenen Misch
parameter vermischt werden, beispielsweise mit einem Gemisch
aus ESCOR 900 mit ESCOR 562 und ESCOR 4000. Vorzugsweise um
fassen die Abdeckungsmaterialien ein Gemisch aus ESCOR 900
und ESCOR 4000, am bevorzugtesten ein Gemisch, bei dem
ESCOR 900 und ESCOR 4000 in einem Gewichtsverhältnis von
etwa 50% zu 50% vorliegen.
Es liegt im Bereich der Erfindung, verträgliche Materialien
in die Abdeckungsmaterialien einzuarbeiten, die deren neu
artige Haupteigenschaften nicht nachteilig beeinflussen,
beispielsweise solche Bestandteile wie Pigmente, Stabili
satoren, optische Glanzbildner, Antioxidantien u. ä. Be
sonders wünschenswerte Bestandteile sind die in der US-PS
46 79 795 beschriebenen Pigmente und optischen Glanzbildner.
Die bevorzugte weiße Grundfarbe der Golfbälle wird durch
Pigmentation der ausgewählten Abdeckungsformulierung
erreicht. Geeignete weiße Pigmente zum Einsatz bei der Er
findung umfassen Titandioxid, Zinkoxid und Zinksulfid.
Erfindungsgemäß können auch fluoreszierende und nicht
fluoreszierende Farbpigmente verwendet werden. Es versteht
sich, daß auch andere Abdeckungen als weiße Abdeckungen
hergestellt werden können, indem man Farbstoffe oder Pig
mente der polymeren Basismischung zusetzt.
Die Menge des in Verbindung mit dem polymeren Abdeckungs
material eingesetzten Pigmentes hängt natürlich unter
anderem von dem speziellen verwendeten Pigment ab und be
trägt normalerweise etwa 1 Gew.-% bis etwa 3 Gew.-% auf der
Basis des Gewichtes des Ionomer. Das am meisten bevorzugte
Pigment ist Titandioxid, das in Mengen von etwa 0,5 bis etwa
5 Gew.-% auf Gewichtsbasis der ESCOR-Ionomeren vorliegt.
Eine besonders bevorzugte Konzentration für das Titandioxid
beträgt etwa 2 Gew.-% auf der Gewichtsbasis der Ionomere.
Für den Fachmann ist klar, daß es verschiedenartige Nuancen
von Weiß gibt, d. h. Weißblau, Weißgelb u. ä. Vorzugsweise
werden bei den erfindungsgemäßen Abdeckungsmaterialien
Spuren an blauem Pigment zugesetzt, um dem Golfball eine
blauweiße Erscheinungsform zu verleihen.
Erfindungsgemäß kann eine große Vielzahl von optischen
Glanzbildnern eingesetzt werden.
Es muß ein optischer Glanzbildner ausgewählt werden, der mit
dem als Basismaterial verwendeten Polymerisat und mit dem
eingesetzten Pigment verträglich ist. Da optische Glanz
bildner für eine große Vielzahl von Einsatzzwecken in
äußerst unterschiedlichen Umgebungen viele Jahre lang ein
gesetzt wurden, sind nicht-funktionelle optische Glanz
bildner existent. Optische Glanzbildner sind zur Aufhellung
von Textilien eingesetzt worden, um diesen eine wünschens
werte blauweiße Erscheinungsform zu verleihen. Dem Anmelder
ist nicht vollständig klar, warum einige optische Glanz
bildner funktionell sind, während andere nicht-funktionell
sind. Es liegt jedoch im Bereich des Wissens des Fachmannes,
einen funktionellen optischen Glanzbildner auszuwählen, der
für die Zwecke der erfindungsgemäßen Abdeckungsmaterialien
eingesetzt werden kann.
Beispiele von geeigneten optischen Glanzbildnern, die erfin
dungsgemäß verwendet werden können, sind Uvitex OB von der
Firma Ciba-Geigy Chemical Company, Ardsley, N. Y., USA.
Hierbei handelt es sich um 2,5-Bis(5-tert-butyl-2-benzoxa
zoly)thiophen. Andere Beispiele von optischen Glanzbildnern
sind die folgenden: Leucopure EGM von der Firma Sandoz, East
Hanover, N. J. 07936, USA. Hierbei handelt es sich um 7-(2h-
naphthol(1,2-d)-triazol-2yl)-3phenyl-coumarin. Ein weiteres
Beispiel ist Phorwhite K-2002 von der Firma Mobay Chemical
Corporation, P. O. Box 385, Union Metro Park, Union, N. J.
07083, USA, bei dem es sich um ein Pyrazolin-Derivat han
delt, und Eastobrite OB-1 von der Firma Eastman Chemical
Products, Inc. Kingsport, TN, USA, bei dem es sich um 4,4-
Bis(-benzoxazoly)stilben handelt.
Viele optische Glanzbildner sind gefärbt. Die Prozentan
teile der verwendeten optischen Glanzbildner müssen nicht
übermäßig groß sein, um zu verhindern, daß der optische
Glanzbildner als Pigment oder Farbstoff wirkt.
Die vorstehend erwähnten Produkte Uvitex und Eastobrite OB-1
werden für die Zwecke der Erfindung bevorzugt.
Der Prozentsatz der optischen Glanzbildner, der erfindungs
gemäß eingesetzt werden kann, reicht von etwa 0,01% bis
etwa 0,5% auf der Basis des Gewichtes des als Abdeckungs
material verwendeten Polymeren. Ein bevorzugter Bereich
reicht von etwa 0,5% bis etwa 0,25%, während der bevor
zugteste Bereich etwa 0,05% bis etwa 0,1% beträgt. Es
versteht sich, daß die vorstehend angegebenen Bereiche in
Abhängigkeit von den optischen Eigenschaften des speziell
verwendeten optischen Glanzbildners und von der polymeren
Umgebung, von der der Glanzbildner einen Teil darstellt,
eingestellt werden müssen.
Normalerweise werden die Additive mit einem Copolymerisat,
das im Abdeckungsmaterial verwendet wird, eingemischt, um
eine Hauptcharge der gewünschten Konzentration zu erhalten,
und eine Menge der Hauptcharge, die ausreicht, um die ge
wünschten Additivmengen zu erhalten, wird dann der Copoly
merisatmischung zugemischt.
Ein besonders bevorzugtes Abdeckungsmaterial für die vor
liegende Erfindung weist die folgenden Bestandteile auf:

Golfbälle, die die erfindungsgemäße Abdeckungszusammen
setzung aufweisen, können mit den Verfahren hergestellt
werden, die momentan eingesetzt werden. Beispielsweise
können ausgewählte Mischungen aus ESCOR 4000 und ESCOR 900,
denen die wahlweisen Bestandteile zugemischt worden sind,
auf einen vorangeordneten Kern gemäß der im Stand der
Technik üblichen Spritzgießtechniken spritzgegossen werden.
In entsprechender Weise können Abdeckungen durch Spritz
gießen von Halbschalen der Abdeckung hergestellt werden,
wobei zwei dieser Halbschalen dann um einen Golfballkern
herum angeordnet werden. Der Kern und die diesen umgebenden
Halbschalen werden dann in eine Preßform gebracht, die
Halbschalen werden aneinander geschmolzen, und es werden auf
den Halbschalen Vertiefungen ausgebildet nach üblichen Ver
fahren.
Die Abdeckungsmaterialien können sowohl auf massive als auch
auf gewickelte Kerne aufgebracht werden, wie sie im Stand
der Technik üblich sind.
Die Erfahrung hat gezeigt, daß der durchschnittliche Golfer
einen glänzenden Golfball bevorzugt. Um glänzende Golfbälle
herzustellen, können die erfindungsgemäßen Bälle mit einem
klaren Epoxid-Urethan-Harz oder Urethan-Urethan-Harz-System
beschichtet werden, nachdem sie geformt worden sind. Ein
solches System besteht aus einem klaren Epoxidharz-Primer,
auf den eine klare Urethan-Harzschicht folgt. Der Einsatz
eines solchen klaren Beschichtungssystems nach dem Form
vorgang ist jedoch nicht unbedingt erforderlich, um die
wünschenswerten Ergebnisse der Erfindung zu erzielen. Er ist
jedoch besonders wünschenswert. Bei der bevorzugten Aus
führungsform wird ein wasserführender (waterborne)
Urethanharz-Primer zuerst aufgebracht, wonach eine klare
Urethanharz-Schicht auf Lösungsmittelbasis folgt. Zusätzlich
zu dem hohen anfänglichen Glanz erzeugt das vorstehend
erwähnte System einen Golfball, der haltbar ist und seinen
Glanz während des Spieles aufrechterhält. Es versteht sich
jedoch, daß auch andere klare Beschichtungssysteme in ent
sprechender Weise eingesetzt werden können.
Ein Qualitätsmerkmal für den erfindungsgemäß eingesetzten
optischen Glanzbildner besteht darin, daß der entsprechende
Glanzbildner mit dem verwendeten Polymersystem verträglich
und bei Temperaturen beständig sein muß, die für das Spritz
gießen der Golfballabdeckung auf einen vorangeordneten Kern
erforderlich sind. Dieser Standard ist erforderlich, wenn
die vorstehend erwähnte Spritzgießtechnik eingesetzt wird.
Wenn bei der Herstellung des Balles eine Preßformtechnik
verwendet wird, muß der erfindungsgemäß eingesetzte optische
Glanzbildner bei den Temperaturen beständig sein, die für
das Spritzgießen der Halbschale und das Preßformen der Halb
schalen um einen vorgeformten Kern herum erforderlich sind.
Die Erfindung ist zur Herstellung von weißen Golfbällen ge
eignet, wobei die Weiße des Balles durch einen klaren ab
schließenden Überzug sichtbar ist. Es versteht sich, daß die
Erfindung auch insofern besonders nützlich ist, als daß
hiermit ein besonders gutes Substrat geschaffen werden kann,
wenn der Golfball in herkömmlicher Weise mit einem weiß
pigmentierten Anstrichsystem gefärbt werden soll. Dieses
Verfahren ist insofern vorteilhaft, als daß eine Basis mit
maximaler Weiße für den Anstrich vorgesehen wird. Der
Anstrich einer Fläche ist in Situationen wünschenswert, bei
denen durch Verschmutzung von Fremdpartikeln der fertige
Golfball mit einem Anstrich versehen werden muß. Dies wird
im Handel üblicherweise als "schmutziges" Herstellverfahren
bezeichnet, bei dem manchmal Verunreinigungen im fertigen
Produkt derart auftreten, daß die Gesamterscheinungsform des
fertigen Golfballes nachteilig beeinflußt wird. Diese ge
ringen "kosmetischen" Fehler können durch Aufbringung eines
einzigen Überzuges mit weißer Farbe über die optisch glän
zende Fläche versteckt werden, anstatt der üblicheren Auf
bringung von zwei Überzügen mit weißer Farbe. Auf diese
Weise werden die kosmetischen Defekte versteckt, und es wird
ein besonders gutes Produkt erzeugt.
In der Beschreibung und in den Patentansprüchen wird der
Begriff "Kern" dazu verwendet, um den mittleren Teil des
fertigen Golfballes zu bezeichnen. Dieser Begriff "Kern"
bezieht sich sowohl auf massive mittlere Bereiche, wie sie
bei zweistückigen Golfbällen Verwendung finden, als auch auf
gewickelte mittlere Bereiche, die üblicherweise bei Bällen
Verwendung finden, die im Handel als dreistückige Golfbälle
bezeichnet werden.
Die nachfolgenden Ausführungsbeispiele dienen dazu, die vor
liegende Erfindung besser zu verdeutlichen. Diese Beispiele
begrenzen in keiner Weise den Umfang der Erfindung. In den
Beispielen sind sämtliche Werte als Gewichtsteile angegeben,
wenn nich anders bezeichnet.
In den folgenden Beispielen wurden Golfbälle unter Ver
wendung der Abdeckungsmaterialien der vorliegenden Er
findung und von Abdeckungsmaterialien zu Kontroll- und Ver
gleichszwecken hergestellt, indem ein massiver, vorgeform
ter vernetzter Polybutadien-Kern im Hohlraum einer Spritz
gießform derart angeordnet wurde, daß ein gleichmäßiges
Spritzgießen des ausgewählten Abdeckungsmateriales um jeden
Kern herum möglich war. Sämtliche Materialien wurden im
wesentlichen unter identisch eingestellten Parametern ge
formt.
Bei der Durchführung der Vergleichstests wurden SURLYN 9910
und SURLYN 8940-Ionomere verwendet. Diese SURLYN-Ionomere
wurden mit verschiedenen ESCOR-Copolymerisaten vermischt, um
die Eigenschaften der erfindungsgemäßen Abdeckungsmateria
lien auswerten zu können.
Bei SURLYN 9910 handelt es sich um ein durch Zink neutrali
siertes Copolymerisat aus Äthylen und Methacrylsäure, das
durch einen Schmelzindex von 0,7 und eine Shore D Härte von
64 gekennzeichnet ist.
SURLYN 8940 ist ein durch Natrium neutralisiertes Copolyme
risat von Äthylen und Methacrylsäure, das durch einen
Schmelzindex von 2,8 und eine Shore D Härte von 65 gekenn
zeichnet ist.
In den Beispielen der Bälle I bezieht sich SURLYN Weiß MB
auf eine Hauptcharge, die die folgende Zusammensetzung be
saß:

Bei den Beispielen der Tabelle I besitzt die ESCOR-Haupt
charge (ESCOR Weiß MB) die folgende Zusammensetzung:

Der Rückstellkoeffizient wurde gemessen, indem der her
gestellte Golfball in einer Luftkanone mit einer Ge
schwindigkeit von 38,1 m pro Sekunde gegen eine Stahlplatte
geschossen wurde, die in einem Abstand von 3,66 m von der
Mündung der Kanone entfernt war. Die Rückprallgeschwindig
keit wurde dann gemessen. Sie wurde durch die Aufprallge
schwindigkeit geteilt, um den Rückstellkoeffizienten zu
erhalten. Die überlegenen Rückstellkoeffizienten der
Abdeckungsmaterialien der vorliegenden Erfindung sind in
Tabelle I im Detail aufgeführt.
Die Shore-Härte wurde gemäß ASTM Test D-2240 gemessen.
Die Schneidfestigkeit wurde nach dem folgenden Verfahren
gemessen. Ein Golfball wurde mit einer Geschwindigkeit von
41,15 m pro Sekunde gegen die Vorderkante eines Teiles
geschossen, wobei der Vorderkantenradius 0,793 mm, der
Bodenwinkel 51°, der Sohlenradius 63,55 mm und der Auf
prallwinkel 7° betrug.
Die Schneidfestigkeit der hier untersuchten Bälle wurde nach
einem Maßstab von 1-5 ausgewertet. 1 bedeutet, daß ein
Schnitt vorhanden ist, der sich vollständig durch die Ab
deckung hindurch bis zum Kern erstreckt; 2 bedeutet, daß ein
Schnitt vorhanden ist, der sich nicht vollständig durch die
Abdeckung hindurch erstreckt, jedoch die Oberfläche auf
bricht; 3 bedeutet, daß kein Bruch der Oberfläche der Ab
deckung vorhanden ist, daß jedoch eine permanente Vertiefung
verbleibt; 4 bedeutet, daß nur ein kleiner Riß vorhanden
ist, der zwar dauerhaft ist, jedoch nicht so groß wie bei 3;
und 5 bedeutet, daß keine sichtbare Vertiefung oder Beschä
digung irgendeiner Art vorhanden ist.
In der vorstehenden Tabelle werden die Eigenschaften der er
findungsgemäß hergestellten Golfbälle (Beispiele 14, 15, 17
und 19-27) mit denen von Bällen des Standes der Technik mit
herkömmlichen SURLYN-Abdeckungen (Beispiele 1, 6, 11 und
18), mit denen, die Abdeckungen auf der Basis eines einzigen
ESCOR-Polymers aufweisen (Beispiele 2, 4, 5), mit denen, die
verschiedenartige ESCOR-SURLYN-Gemische aufweisen (Beispiele
3, 7, 8, 12, 13, 16) und mit denen, die einzige SURLYN-
Ionomere besitzen (Beispiele 9 und 10) verglichen.
Wie aus einer Durchsicht der aufgeführten Ergebnisse her
vorgeht, besitzen die neuartigen Abdeckungsmaterialien der
Erfindung eine gleich gute Haltbarkeit wie Golfbälle mit
Abdeckungsmaterialien auf der Basis von SURLYN-neutrali
siertem Poly(ethylen-Methacryl-Säure) Copolymerisat und
weisen darüber hinaus einen signifikant erhöhten Rückstell
koeffizienten auf.
Zusätzlich zu besseren Spieleigenschaften der Golfbälle
führen die erfindungsgemäßen ESCOR-Gemische zu einer be
trächtlichen Kostenersparnis im Vergleich zu Golfbällen des
Standes der Technik.
Claims (13)
1. Golfball, gekennzeichnet durch einen Kern und eine
Abdeckung, wobei die Abdeckung ein Ionomer umfaßt, das ein
teilweise neutralisiertes Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisat
ist.
2. Golfball nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
das Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisat mit Natrium- oder Zink-
Ionen neutralisiert ist.
3. Golfball nach Anspruch 1, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
die Abdeckung ein Gemisch aus Natrium- und Zink-Ionomeren
umfaßt.
4. Golfball, gekennzeichnet durch einen Kern und eine Ab
deckung, wobei die Abdeckung ein Gemisch aus etwa 10 Gew.-%
bis etwa 90 Gew.-% eines Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisates,
das etwa 11 Gew.-% Acrylsäure aufweist, bei der etwa 40% der
Karbonsäuregruppen mit Natriumionen neutralisiert sind, in
entsprechender Weise von etwa 90 Gew.-% bis etwa 10 Gew.-%
von mindestens einem Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisat, das
etwa 11 Gew.-% bis etwa 16 Gew.-% Acrylsäure enthält, wobei
etwa 10% bis etwa 40% der Karbonsäuregruppen durch Zink-
Ionen neutralisiert sind, und etwa 2,4 Gew.-% von damit
verträglichen Additiven umfaßt.
5. Golfball nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
die Abdeckung etwa 25 Gew.-% bis etwa 75 Gew.-% des mit
Natrium neutralisierten Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisates
und etwa 75 Gew.-% bis etwa 25 Gew.-% eines mit Zink neu
tralisierten Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisates aufweist.
6. Golfball nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
die Abdeckung etwa 45,2 Gew.-% mit Natrium neutralisiertes
Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisat und etwa 52,4 Gew.-% mit
Zink neutralisiertes Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisat ent
hält.
7. Golfball nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
das mit Natrium neutralisierte Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copoly
merisat ESCOR 900 und das mit Zink neutralisierte Äthylen-
Acrylsäure-Copolymerisat ESCOR 4000 ist.
8. Golfball nach Anspruch 5, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
das mit Natrium neutralisierte Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copoly
merisat ESCOR 900 und das mit Zink neutralisierte Äthylen-
Acrylsäure-Copolymerisat ESCOR 4000 ist.
9. Golfball nach Anspruch 6, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
das mit Natrium neutralisierte Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copoly
merisat ESCOR 900 und das mit Zink neutralisierte Äthylen-
Acrylsäure-Copolymerisat ESCOR 4000 ist.
10. Golfball nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
die mit Zink neutralisierte Copolymerisat-Komponente des
Gemisches eine Mischung des mit Zink neutralisierten
Äthylen-Acrylsäure-Copolymerisates ist.
11. Golfball nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Abdeckung ein Gemisch aus
einem oder mehreren Pigmenten, einem optischen Glanzbildner
und/oder einem Farbstoff umfaßt.
12. Golfball nach Anspruch 4, dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß
die Additive ein Gemisch aus einem oder mehreren Pigmenten,
einem optischen Glanzbildner und/oder einem Farbstoff um
fassen.
13. Golfball nach einem der vorangehenden Ansprüche,
dadurch gekennzeichnet, daß die Abdeckung des weiteren ein
Ionomer aufweist, das ein teilweise neutralisiertes Äthylen-
Methacrylsäure-Copolymerisat ist.
