Abstract

In a character generator (1) for a non-mechanical printer a high heat loss occurs due to a plurality of light sources, especially light-emitting diodes, which has to be dissipated by forced cooling. According to the invention, the cooling arrangement (14) is formed from a plurality of cooling elements (140, 140a), which are arranged parallel to one another in slots (141) of a carrier (13) accommodating the light sources. The cooling elements (140) are formed from cooling webs (144) and intervening gap openings (145). The cooling elements (140, 140a) are arranged and/or designed in such a way that a cooling web (144) lies opposite each gap opening (145) of an adjacent cooling element (140, 140a). Description

The invention relates to a cooling arrangement for a optical character generator of a non-mechanical printer according to the preamble of claim 1.

With modern non-mechanical printers, which according to the Prin zip of electrophotography work, signs on egg ner photoconductor drum by light sources, in particular LEDs created. With a high printing performance of the non-mechanical printer is created in which the light sources character generator containing a large heat loss which are removed by means of forced cooling got to.

From WO-87/02 162 a character generator is not one mechanical printer known to use a variety of light has sources and with a cooling arrangement for dispensing the heat dissipation is provided. The cooling arrangement protrudes on the side opposite the light sources a carrier receiving the light sources. The Cooling arrangement can have finned heat sinks, which by means of Fix screws, rivets or by gluing to the carrier be increased. However, this connection technology does not work particularly good heat transfer, which is the most efficient speed of the entire cooling arrangement is severely impaired. Practice Licher such a character generator has a Variety of light sources, but is due to a ge wrestle required construction volume only a limited effective Surface for the dissipation of heat dissipation for ver addition. The resulting heat loss can therefore Abge very poorly by conventional finned heat sink leads.

The invention is therefore based on the object of cooling arrangement to indicate that, despite a small supply volume ensures that they occur de heat dissipation is reliably dissipated.

According to the invention the task in the cooling arrangement of the type mentioned at the beginning by the in the characterizing part of claim 1 specified features solved.

In the cooling arrangement according to the invention, the Ab drove the heat dissipation through cooling elements that for example as a cooling plate or as a serpentine cooling grid can be formed and at certain intervals are arranged one behind the other. The cooling elements are enclosed by air baffles and by a blower Cooling air supplied. The cooling elements are designed that individual cooling webs are arranged like pins. By an offset of the cooling webs from adjacent cooling elements becomes a very good swirl of the air flowing through reached. This turbulence will then be particularly he is sufficient if the cooling webs against each other by one half division are arranged offset. The offset can can be achieved in that adjacent to each other Cooling elements are designed differently. Advantageous However, the cooling elements are all of the same type trained and offset against each other in grooves of a Trä gers arranged. Copper is the preferred material used and the cooling elements are with the one to be cooled Carrier of the character generator cohesively connected, especially soldered. Because of this cohesive Connection will have a minimal thermal resistance between the Cooling elements and the carrier reached. The number of out superimposed cooling elements and their height can largely determined freely. So it is possible to any effective surface involved in heat exchange to optimize or on an available fan vote. The cooling elements are preferably such  designed that the cooling webs on at least one end are connected to each other by a longitudinal web to the whole heat sink to give the desired strength.

Such a cooling arrangement can be extremely inexpensive be made because the cooling elements by simple Punching the stomata created or from a wire can preferably be bent from copper.

Fig. 1 shows how a character generator 1 and an order drum 2 are installed in a printer housing 3 of a printer. For this purpose, the transfer drum 2 is axially fixed on a spindle 20 which is rotatably mounted in the printer housing 3 . Below the transfer drum 2 is rotatably mounted, the character generator 1 in the printer body 3 is BEFE Stigt. The character generator 1 is fixed to its two ends on the adjustable fasteners 30 , 31 .

The character generator 1 contains a variety of light sources that generate a latent, electrostatic image on the transfer drum 2 via an imaging optics 10 . Through the imaging optics 10 image points are reproduced by the light sources for example light emitting diodes (LEDs) on the transfer drum. 2 These light sources are arranged on an exposure module 11 , which is positively connected to the web of a T-shaped module carrier 13 . Stop elements 12 are further provided on the web of the module carrier 13 , which prevent the exposure modules 11 from being displaced in the X direction in the operating state of the character generator 1 . In addition, the base of the flange is divided into two contact surfaces 131 , 132 and one of these two contact surfaces 131 , 132 stepped surface 133 on which a plurality of cooling elements 14 forming cooling elements 140 , 140 a are attached, for example soldered.

The illustration in FIG. 2 shows the cooling principle in the cooling arrangement 14 . The cooling elements 140 , 140 a have cooling webs 144 , which are separated from one another by stomata 145 . The cooling elements 140 , 140 a are arranged in such a way that the cooling webs 144 of mutually adjacent cooling elements 140 , 140 a are arranged offset. An optimal swirling of an air flow generated by a blower 143 is achieved if the offset corresponds exactly to one division, ie if a cooling web 144 faces a gap opening 145 of an adjacent cooling element 140 , 140 a . This can be achieved in that on every second cooling element 140 , 140 a, the cooling webs 144 and the stomata 145 are offset angeord net. Expediently, however, the cooling elements 140 , 140 a are all of the same design and are correspondingly installed in grooves in the module carrier 13 .

The structure of a first embodiment of the cooling arrangement 14 is shown schematically in FIG. 3. As can be seen from Fig. 3, the cooling arrangement 14 forming, extending in the X-direction cooling plates 140 in recesses dy parallel grooves 141 on the stepped step surface 133 of the module carrier flange offset in the X direction and embedded therein Grooves 141 attached by means of a solder joint. While the width of the individual cooling plates 140 is given by the width of the grooves 141 , the expansion of the cooling plates 140 in the X and Z directions is oriented, on the one hand, to the installation space available in the printer housing 3 for installing the character generator 1 . On the other hand, the surface of the cooling arrangement is determined in particular by the thermal power loss Pv that the character generator 1 emits in the operating state. The at the character generator 1 on stepping heat sources are in spite of the sheet-like formation, especially the light sources arranged on the exposure modules 11 . In order not to unnecessarily reduce the life of these light-emitting diodes, they should be cooled sufficiently. This is achieved in the vorlie case, on the one hand, that both the exposure modules 11 and the module carrier 13 are made of mas sive copper and, moreover, the heat transfer between the heat source in the character generator 1 and the cooling arrangement 14 provided for additional cooling is optimized . Optimal heat transfer occurs when the number of heat transfers, for example between a solid and a gaseous medium, is as minimal as possible or the thermal contact resistance for a heat flow occurring at the heat transfer due to heat transfer is as small as possible. This condition is realized by a beispielswei se air gap with a gap width of less than 2 microns between joining surfaces of the exposure modules 11 or between the contact surfaces of the Modulträ gers 13 and the respective exposure module 11 weitestge starting met. The same applies in this context to the integral soldered connection between the cooling plate 140 of the cooling arrangement 14 and the module carrier 13 . In order to be able to derive the thermal power loss of the character generator 1 even better in the following, the cooling arrangement 14 is provided in the Y direction with a homogeneous air flow.

Fig. 4 shows how the air flow generated by the blower 143 in a space enclosed by vanes 142 channel the cooling elements 140, 140 is supplied to a. To lead from the thermal power loss of the drawing generator 1 , the temperature of the air flow TO must be lower than the temperature Tm of the module carrier 13 .

So that the air generated by the blower 143 can flow through the cooling plates 140 in the Y direction, according to FIG. 3 in the Z direction of the individual cooling plates 140 , each of which is separated by a cooling web 144 , gap openings 145 are inserted, the expansion of which in Z -Direction is limited by a longitudinal web 146 connecting the cooling webs 144 . In order to obtain a swirling of the air flow penetrating the stomata 145 of the cooling plates 140 and thus to increase the dwell time of the air flow between the individual cooling plates 140 , every second cooling plate 140 is offset in the groove 141 by half a cooling web distance in the X direction.

The Fig. 5 also shows about a second embodiment, the structure of which the first execution is similar in principle form. In contrast to this, the cooling elements 140 , 140 a are formed as a serpentine cooling grille 140 a . To form this cooling grille 140 a , a copper wire is preferably used, which is shaped in the manner shown and fastened in the grooves 141 of the module carrier 13 on the step surface 133 by a material connection, for example by a soldered connection at a shaped end. Due to the serpentine configuration of the copper wire that this has on the deformed ends to stabilize the cooling grid 140 a only a longitudinal web 146 a, which forms a cooling grid 140 a column apertures 145 a with cooling fins 144 arises.

FIG. 6 also shows how the cooling elements 140 , 140 a are fastened in the grooves 141 of the module carrier 13 by means of a solder 200 .
