Es muß also
Process for the production of nitric acid by means of electric flame arcs.
It is known that in the oxidation of nitrogen of the air by means of electrical
Flame arcs an increase in yield of 25 percent can be achieved though
instead of atmospheric air, a mixture of 50 percent nitrogen and
Oxygen is applied. Because the nitrogen oxide content of the gases also in this case
N O is only about 2 to 3 percent, which must be after the absorption of the nitric acid
any remaining residual gases must be fed back into the electric furnace, otherwise
the loss of oxygen makes the process economically impossible. So it must
the so-called cycle process is used, in which only so much nitrogen
and oxygen is introduced into the gas mixture as that generated and absorbed
Nitric acid corresponds, while the main gas mixture of 5o percent oxygen
and nitrogen through the electric ovens and absorption equipment and again
is led back. In technical operation, the great difficulty has now arisen here
show that the gases escaping from the absorption apparatus with moisture
are so oversaturated that they can with the in the electric without prior drying
Nitric oxide gases formed in the furnace form nitric acid so early that they are corroded
of the apparatus between the electric furnace and the absorption device
must be installed. So it would have to be between the absorption apparatus
and a drying device can be built into the electric furnace, which is very
is expensive and because of the expense of operating materials, the advantage again
that can be achieved by using the oxygen-nitrogen cycle
can.
According to the present invention, these difficulties are easily eliminated
by the fact that the absorption of the nitrous gases in the last or in the last
Towers or parts of the absorption system at such a low temperature,
that the tension of the water vapor in the residual gases is practically that given above
Can no longer cause evils. In contrast to the previously known way of working
the last absorption towers are no longer filled with water or become thinner
Nitric acid sprinkled, but with a nitric acid which is at least 15 percent
and contains a maximum of 33 percent H N 03, at the same time the temperature in this
Part of the absorption system is pressed down by artificial cooling so far,
that the residual gases exit with about -zo to -2o °. As a result of this deep cooling
the content of water vapor falls so low that the dreaded formation of
Nitric acid cannot enter the endangered part of the apparatus. Surprisingly
it was found that the absorbency of this acid at this temperature
is better than when the last absorption towers with water or very thin nitric acid
be exposed to a constant stream.
It is then possible in the absorption plant
only
Nitric acid to gain while known so far to the acidic absorption
a residual absorption with strong alkalis had to be connected. The required
Cooling of the apparatus and the gases can be achieved by known means,
either by the fact that the gases are sufficient before entering the absorption apparatus
be pre-cooled, or by having the circulating acid in special apparatus
cools so far that the required low temperature is maintained.
While one has so far on the last absorption towers pure water
gave up, one now leaves nitric acid at the required concentration of
about 15 to 33 percent by weight of H N 03 circulate and only adds this continuously
as much water as corresponds to the amount of H N 03 generated from the nitrous gases,
so that that concentration remains which would cause the nitric acid to cool down
from -ro to -q.o °. Since the residual gases to be withdrawn are still a considerable amount
Can give off cold, it can be used to countercurrently flow into the apparatus
to pre-cool incoming warm gases.
