The invention further relates to the use of this gloss pigments for coloring paints, printing inks, inks, art substances, glasses, ceramic products and preparations of the decorative cosmetics.

Gloss or effect pigments are used in many areas of technology used, for example in automotive paints, in the decorative Coating, plastic coloring, in paints, printing colors, especially security printing inks, as well as in the Cosmetics.

Their optical effect is based on the directed reflection of Light on predominantly flat, parallel to each other aligned, metallic or highly refractive pigment particles. Depending on the composition of the pigment platelets Interference, reflection and absorption phenomena dependent color and brightness impressions.

Of particular interest are goniochromatic gloss pigments, the an angle-dependent color change between several inten sive interference colors and thus an attractive play of colors demonstrate. These pigments typically have a light color reflective platelet-shaped core, which alternates with low refractive index and high refractive index layers is occupied.

Eine Übersicht über goniochromatische Glanzpigmente gibt European Coatings Journal 7-8, Seite 702-705 (1997). Einzelheiten zu den dort beschriebenen sowie weiteren goniochromatischen Glanz pigmenten sind in den US-A-3 438 796, US-A-4 434 010, EP-A-668 329, WO-A-96/34917, EP-A-708 154, EP-A-753 545 und DE-A-197 46 067 sowie den älteren deutschen Patentanmeldungen 198 08 657.1 und 198 22 046.4 beschrieben.European gives an overview of goniochromatic gloss pigments Coatings Journal 7-8, pages 702-705 (1997). Details of the described there as well as other goniochromatic shine pigments are described in US-A-3,438,796, US-A-4,434,010, EP-A-668 329, WO-A-96/34917, EP-A-708 154, EP-A-753 545 and DE-A-197 46 067 and the older German patent applications 198 08 657.1 and 198 22 046.4.

All known goniochromatic gloss pigments have a color bare, low refractive index layer, often referred to as dielectric common for the angle-dependent color impression of the pigments is responsible and their delicate interference colors by the Combination with highly refractive and possibly absorbent Layers are reinforced. In the application, the colors These pigments usually play by adding other colors means to adapt to the respective color requirements and modified the personal taste of the user. There Color perception and personal taste are very individual, however, there is always a need for new effects that does not can always be satisfied by combining known colorants can.

The invention was based, further goniochromatic the task Shine pigments provide the new color effects show and are characterized by advantageous application properties to draw.

Accordingly, the goniochromatic defined at the beginning Glossy pigments found.

Furthermore, the use of the gloss according to the invention pigments for coloring paints, printing inks, inks, art substances, glasses, ceramic products and preparations of the decorative cosmetics found.

Die erfindungsgemäßen Glanzpigmente basieren auf mehrfach be schichteten, reflektierenden, plättchenförmigen Substraten, die eine niedrigbrechende Beschichtung (A), die sichtbares Licht selektiv absorbiert, in Kombination mit einer reflektierenden, für sichtbares Licht zumindest teilweise durchlässigen Beschich tung (B) aufweisen. The luster pigments according to the invention are based on multiple be layered, reflective, platelet-shaped substrates that a low refractive index coating (A) that provides visible light selectively absorbed, in combination with a reflective, for visible light, at least partially permeable coating device (B).

Suitable substrate materials for the gloss according to the invention pigments all platelet-shaped materials that are perpendicular to partial or total light (usually at least 10%) reflect. As a rule, these materials are high refractive and usually have a refractive index of in  Rule ≧ 2, preferably ≧ 2.4, they can be opaque, semi-opaque or be transparent and colored in reflection or transmission.

A group of suitable substrate materials are metal platelets. All metals known for metallic effect pigments and Alloys, e.g. B. steel, copper and its alloys such as brass and bronzes and especially aluminum and its alloys such as Aluminum bronze, in consideration. Aluminum flakes are preferred in a simple way by punching out of aluminum foil or are to be manufactured according to common atomization and grinding techniques, whereby commercially available products can be used whose However, the surface is largely free of grease or similar Documentary material should be and passivated, d. H. especially against stabilized over water.

If desired, the metallic substrate particles can already with high-index metal connections such as high-index metal oxide, metal nitride or metal sulfide, especially z. B. iron or titanium oxide, can be coated and therefore by interference effects and possibly absorption already a (weak) intrinsic color own (Paliocrom®, BASF). However, this coating should not be too thick (about 5 to 150 nm) so the substrate keep their metallic color. Can continue the metallic substrate particles also with magnetic materia lien such as iron, cobalt, nickel or γ-iron (III) oxide and so that it can be magnetized.

Another group of suitable substrate materials are metallic platelets which are "intrinsically refractive" or the "by itself" only low refractive index and therefore with one high refractive coating are provided.

Examples of particularly suitable intrinsically refractive materials are selectively or non-selectively absorbent materials, e.g. B. platelet-shaped metal oxides, sulfides and nitrides such as platelet-shaped (semi-opaque) α-iron (III) oxide (α-Fe 2 O 3 , hematite), with silicon (EP-A-14 382), aluminum (EP -A-68 311) or aluminum and manganese (EP-A-265 820) can be doped (e.g. Paliocrom® copper L3000, BASF; AM200, Titan Kogyo), platelet-shaped (opaque) iron (II / III) oxide (Fe 3 O 4 , magnetite), molybdenum sulfide, boron nitride and graphite platelets. Non-absorbent (colorless), transparent materials such as platelet-shaped bismuth oxychloride, titanium dioxide and zirconium dioxide platelets are also suitable.

Examples of particularly suitable ones are low in themselves refractive materials are like silicate plates like especially light or white mica, preferably wet ver ground muscovite, but also other natural mica, e.g. B. Phlogopite and biotite, artificial mica, talc and glass scales and silicon dioxide wafers.

As a high-index coating for these low-index materials, particularly high-index metal oxides, metal nitrides and metal sulfides such as titanium, zirconium, zinc and tin oxide, bismuth oxychloride, iron oxides, chromium oxide and ilmenite as well as titanium compounds with an oxidation number of <4 to 2 are contained such as Ti 3 O 5 , Ti 2 O 3 , TiO, titanium oxynitride and TiN, which result from the reduction of substrates coated with titanium dioxide with ammonia, hydrogen and / or hydrocarbons. In addition to ilmenite, titanium dioxide and its reduction products and iron (III) oxide are preferred.

Derartig beschichtete Glimmerpigmente sind ebenfalls im Handel erhältlich (Paliocrom, BASF; Iriodin®, Merck; Mearlin®, Mearl).Mica pigments coated in this way are also commercially available available (Paliocrom, BASF; Iriodin®, Merck; Mearlin®, Mearl).

Übliche geometrische Schichtdicken für diese hochbrechenden Be schichtungen liegen im Bereich von etwa 10 bis 300 nm, ins besondere von 20 bis 200 nm.Usual geometric layer thicknesses for these high refractive indexes layers are in the range of about 10 to 300 nm, ins special from 20 to 200 nm.

The size of the substrate particles can be tailored to the respective application. As a rule, the platelets have average largest diameters of approximately 1 to 200 μm, in particular 5 to 100 μm, and thicknesses of approximately 0.1 to 1 μm, in particular approximately 0.5 μm for metallic and approximately 0.3 μm non-metallic substrates. Their specific free surface area (BET) is usually 1 to 15 m 2 / g, in particular 0.1 to 5 m 2 / g for metallic and 1 to 12 m 2 / g for non-metallic substrates.

A) + (B).The gloss pigments according to the invention have a low refractive index visible light selectively absorbing coating (A) in Combine with a reflective, for visible light too at least partially permeable coating (B). You can several identical or different combinations (shift packages) (A) + (B) included, but preference is given to only a shift package (A) + (B).

The coating (A) according to the invention is preferably made of a colorless low-index material built into the one or several selectively absorbing colorants are stored.

Das Schichtmaterial (A) und dementsprechend auch die Beschichtung (A) hat vorzugsweise einen Brechungsindex n ≦ 1,8, insbesondere ≦ 1,6.The layer material (A) and, accordingly, the coating (A) preferably has a refractive index n ≦ 1.8, in particular ≦ 1.6.

In principle, all of them are low as layer material (A) breaking colorless substances that are film-like and permanent the substrate particles can be applied.

B. metal oxides and metal oxide hydrates such as silicon oxide, silicon oxide hydrate, aluminum oxide, aluminum hydrated oxide, aluminum hydroxide and mixtures thereof, wherein Silicon oxide (hydrate) is preferred.

Die bevorzugte erfindungsgemäße Beschichtung (A) enthält einge lagertes selektiv absorbierendes Farbmittel. The preferred coating (A) according to the invention contains some stored selectively absorbing colorant. This colorant can be distributed essentially homogeneously in the coating (A) or in a partial area of the coating (A), e.g. B. in the lower or upper part or in the middle of layer (A) the coating (A) can be a concentration gradient with respect to the colorant. Color is preferred medium in the lower area of the coating (A) close to the substrate enriched.

All dyes and pigments are suitable as colorants, which can be permanently stored in layer (A) and whose refractive index is preferably not significantly above that Refractive index of the layer material (A) is. In principle can higher refractive index colorants are also used, however their share of the coating (A) should not be so large that the refractive index of the coating (A) increases markedly and the goniochromaticity of the gloss pigments according to the invention wrestles.

Neben niedrigbrechenden anorganischen Pigmenten wie Cyanoferraten (z. B. K3[Fe(CN)6], K[Fe(II)Fe(III)(CN)6], Fe(III)[Fe(II)Fe(III)(CN)6]), Granaten (z. B. Ca3Cr2Si3O12) Phosphaten (insbesondere Cobaltphosphaten, z. B. Co3(PO4)2, CoLiPO4), Boraten (insbesondere Cobaltboraten, z. Beispielhaft seien hier folgende Pigmentklassen aufgeführt: Azo-, Disazo-, Anthanthron-, Anthrachinon-, Anthrapyrimidin-, Chinacridon-, Chinophthalon-, Diketopyrrolopyrrol-, Dioxazin-, Flavanthron-, Indanthron-, Isoindolin-, Isoindolinon-, Isoviolanthron-, Metallkomplex-, Perinon-, Perylen-, Phthalocyanin-, Pyranthron-, Thioindigo- und Triarylcarboniumpigmente. In addition to low refractive index inorganic pigments such as cyanoferrates (e.g. K 3 [Fe (CN) 6 ], K [Fe (II) Fe (III) (CN) 6 ], Fe (III) [Fe (II) Fe (III) (CN) 6 ]), garnets (e.g. Ca 3 Cr 2 Si 3 O 12 ) phosphates (especially cobalt phosphates, e.g. Co 3 (PO 4 ) 2 , CoLiPO 4 ), borates (especially cobalt borates, e.g. B. (Co, Mg) 2 B 2 O 5 ) and ultraman (e.g. Na 4 [Al 3 Si 3 O 12 ] S 3 ) are particularly suitable for organic pigments, since their interaction with light is based in particular on absorption . The following pigment classes are listed here by way of example: azo, disazo, anthanthrone, anthraquinone, anthrapyrimidine, quinacridone, quinophthalone, diketopyrrolopyrrole, dioxazine, flavanthrone, indanthrone, isoindoline, isoindolinone, isoviolanthrone, isoviolanthrone -, Perinone, perylene, phthalocyanine, pyranthrone, thioindigo and triaryl carbonium pigments.

Dyes are particularly suitable because, unlike Pig elements do not act as a scattering center. In principle, everyone can Dyes are used, such dyes are preferred, those in water and / or in water-miscible organic Solvents, e.g. B. alcohols are soluble and therefore among the Usually used reaction conditions for production the coating (A) advantageously incorporated into this layer can be.

Bei saurem Schichtmaterial (A), z. B. Siliciumdioxid, sind daher kationische (basische) Farb stoffe bevorzugt, bei basischem Schichtmaterial (A), z. B. Aluminiumoxid, sind anionische Farbstoffe (Säurefarbstoffe) bevorzugt. In amphoteren Schichtmaterialien sind beide Farbstoff klassen einsetzbar.Dyes with a high affinity are particularly suitable to the layer material (A). With acidic layer material (A), e.g. B. silicon dioxide, are therefore cationic (basic) color preferred materials, with basic layer material (A), z. B. Aluminum oxide, are anionic dyes (acid dyes) prefers. Both are dye in amphoteric layer materials great for use.

Cationic dyes carry a positive charge, which is beyond that Dye molecule delocalized or on a heteroatom as before all a nitrogen atom (quaternary ammonium ion), but also an oxygen, sulfur or phosphorus atom can. The salt-forming counterion is mostly the colorless anion an inorganic or organic acid of low molecular weight weight.

To the color impression to reinforce and also in application media with low Refractive index, e.g. B. paints to make it clearly visible the gloss pigments of the invention additionally with the coating device (B).

The reflective coating (B) of the gloss according to the invention pigments must be at least partially transparent to visible light be d. H. usually at least 10%, preferably at least 30%, of the incident light.

Both are suitable for the coating (B) according to the invention high-index materials that do not absorb visible light absorb, selectively or non-selectively, than also low refractive index, but in the visible wavelength range a high absorption constant (usually ≧ 4) punching, which of course is also film-like and permanent must be separable.

As a high-index, particularly suitable for the coating (B) Materials are, for example, metals and metal compounds such as metal oxides, metal nitrides and metal sulfides and their Called mixtures that also contain low refractive index substances can contain minor amount, as long as the refractive index dex n of the mixture does not noticeably decrease, which in the Rule n ≧ 2, especially ≧ 2.4, should be.

B. Aluminium. As a low-refractive, but highly absorbent layer materials (B) are particularly suitable for non-selective absorption Materials such as metals, e.g. B. aluminum.

Bei niedrigbrechenden, stark absorbierenden Materialien (B) beträgt die geometrische Schichtdicke schließlich bevorzugt 1 bis 25 nm, besonders bevorzugt 5 bis 20 nm.The geometric layer thickness of the coating (B) varies depending on the optical properties of the selected layer material and can be 1 to about 500 nm. Preferred geometric layer thicknesses are 5 to 50 nm, in particular 10 to 40 nm in the case of highly refractive, non-absorbent materials (B) and 1 to 500 nm, in particular 10 to 150 nm in the case of highly refractive, selectively absorbing materials (B). non-selectively absorbing materials (B) the geometric layer thickness is preferably in the range from 1 to 100 nm, layer thicknesses from 1 to 25 nm for strongly absorbent metal such as molybdenum and chromium, layer thicknesses from 10 to 50 nm for less absorbent materials such as magnetite and metal sulfide-containing ones Materials such as MoS 2 -containing layers, layer thicknesses of 5 to 20 nm are particularly preferred. In the case of low-refractive, highly absorbent materials (B), the geometric layer thickness is finally preferably 1 to 25 nm, particularly preferably 5 to 20 nm.

Enthalten die erfindungsgemäßen Glanzpigmente mehrere Schicht pakete (A) + (B), so erniedrigt sich die Schichtdicke der Beschichtungen (B) üblicherweise um etwa 50 bis 75%.The gloss pigments according to the invention contain several layers packages (A) + (B), the layer thickness decreases Coatings (B) usually around 50 to 75%.

Through the coating (B) the play of colors with the Coating (A) coated gloss pigments reinforced, if necessary (e.g. by selective absorption) modified and in all An application media made clearly visible. As already stated, is the play of colors of the gloss pigments coated with (A) (and (B))  specifically by selecting the one built into the coating (A) Colorant can be varied.

For example, a platelet-shaped aluminum pigment an approximately 350 nm thick silicon dioxide layer and one semitransparent molybdenum layer (B) shows that applied pigment in the top view a strong green, which at steeper viewing angles to blue. If you build in the Silicon dioxide layer a blue colorant, so the Color range of the bluish green tones in the play of colors of the Pig expand advantageously, the pigment is turquoise when viewed from above and blue at steeper viewing angles.

This effect is even more impressive. B. also with one with an approximately 350 nm thick silicon dioxide layer, however instead with the molybdenum layer with an iron (III) oxide layer (B) put aluminum pigment visible. Before installing the selectively sorbent colorant is a greenish golden pigment, its color changes from achromatic to steeper viewing angles tilts. The incorporation of a blue colorant into the silicon dioxide layer causes an intense green color in supervision and at steeper viewing angles a tipping in bluish green.

Finally, the luster pigments according to the invention can also be used have outer layer (C), in particular for protection underlying, essentially metallic or reduced Layers (B) containing (low-value) metal oxides are used.

The layer (C) can consist of low refractive index or high refractive index Metal oxides that are both colorless and selectively absorbent can be built up. Are suitable for. B. silicon oxide, Silicon oxide hydrate, aluminum oxide, aluminum oxide hydrate, tin oxide, Titanium dioxide, zirconium oxide, iron (III) oxide and chromium (III) oxide, whereby Silicon oxide and aluminum oxide are preferred.

Layer (C) can also be a layer containing phosphate, chromate and / or vanadate or also containing phosphate and aminoalkyl groups and containing SiO 2 , which in particular also includes the use of a largely metallic layer (B) enables gloss pigments according to the invention in waterborne basecoats or other aqueous systems.

The geometric thickness of the layer (C) is in general about 1 to 400 nm, preferably 5 to 250 nm.

The luster pigments according to the invention are notable for the uniform, homogeneous and film-like structure of their inter referential coating from which the substrate platelets all wrapped on one side. They show a very strong, extremely angular dependent play of colors with new color flops and high brilliance, targeted to the respective color requirements can be fitted.

The preparation of the luster pigments according to the invention can be advantageous be done by using the preferred colorant Coating (A) wet-chemically by hydrolytic decomposition organic or inorganic metal compounds in the presence of the colorant is applied to the substrate particles and the Coating (B) (as well as the coating if desired (C)) then also wet-chemical or preferably over Gas phase decomposition of volatile metal compound (chemical vapor deposition, CVD).

Depending on the desired distribution of the colorant in the coating (A), the procedure in the first coating step is expediently as follows:
If the colorant is to be distributed essentially homogeneously in the coating (A), the metal compound to be decomposed and the colorant (optionally as a solution) are metered into the suspension of the substrate particles at the same time. If the colorant is to be enriched in the upper part of the coating (A), only the metal compound to be decomposed is first metered in and the colorant is only metered in when sufficient layer material (A) has already been deposited on the substrate particles. Conversely, if the colorant is to be enriched in the lower part of the coating (A), the substrate particles and the colorant are introduced and the metal compound to be decomposed is then metered in. The concentration of free colorant in the pigment suspension then decreases with increasing coating.

When starting from organic metal compounds, ins particularly preferred variant in the case of metallic substrate particles to deposit the coating (A) can advantageously according to proceed in the process described in EP-A-668 329, in which organic silicon and / or aluminum compounds, in which the organic residues via oxygen atoms on the metals are bound, in the presence of the substrate particles and an orga African solvent in which the metal compounds are soluble and which is miscible with water can be hydrolyzed.

The preferred embodiment consists in the hydrolysis of Metal alcoholates (especially tetraethoxysilane and aluminum tri isopropanolate) in the presence of an alcohol (especially iso propanol or ethanol) and aqueous ammonia as a catalyst.

In terms of process engineering, the procedure is preferably such that Submitting substrate particles, alcohol, water and ammonia, this Mixing with stirring to 40 to 80 ° C, in particular 60 to 70 ° C, heated and a solution of the metal alcoholate in alcohol conti added slowly. The colorant is given as above wrote, depending on the desired storage in the Layer (A) (homogeneous or enriched in certain areas). To a subsequent stirring time of usually about 1 to 15 hours is cooled Mix to room temperature and isolate the coated pig by filtering and drying.

Silicon oxide (hydrate) coatings (A) can also be advantageous starting from alkali metal silicates, in particular from baking soda water glass.

You go like in the older German patent application 198 08 657.1 described, expediently so that the (preferably non-metallic) substrate particles in water sus oscillates, the suspension to about 20 to 100 ° C, preferably 40 to 80 ° C, heated, with a base (especially an alkali metal hydroxide solution such as potassium hydroxide solution or sodium hydroxide solution) or an acid (e.g. nitric acid) usually has a pH of 4 to 9, preferably 6.5 to 8.5, in particular about 7.5, and the alkali metal silicate solution with the simultaneous addition of a aqueous inorganic acid to keep the pH constant added. Here too, the colorant is added depending on the ge desired coating result (puts it with the substrate particle, it doses simultaneously with the alkali metal silicate or late to). If necessary, stir until a few minutes to 2 h after.

The coatings (B) (and optionally (C)) can advantageously by the CVD process or also wet be chemically deposited.

In the CVD variant, the starting compounds are volatile Metal compounds, especially metal carbonyls, metal alcohol latex, metal organyls or metal halides, used in Temperature range from about 100 to 600 ° C in the presence of inert gas, air or water vapor are inert, oxidative or hydrolytic metal or metal depositing on the pigment particles oxide films are decomposable, which can then optionally  by reaction with sulfur-containing compounds or ammonia containing gases converted into metal sulfide or metal nitride films can be delt.

The wet chemical variant is particularly suitable for the production of Metal oxide coatings (B), in particular of titanium dioxide layer ten, and is preferably based on hydrolytic decomposition suitable metal salts or alcoholates.

Both process variants are well known. details can see EP-A-753 545 and the older German patent application 198 08 657.1.

After the suspension had been heated to 75 ° C., 1540 ml of sodium water glass solution (68 gSi / l) were added in about 48 h, the pH of the suspension being kept at 8.8 by simultaneously adding 416 ml of 20% strength by weight nitric acid . After stirring for 1 h and cooling to room temperature, the product was filtered off, washed with water and with ethanol and then dried at 75 ° C. under vacuum.
429 g of a blue pigment were obtained.
Step a) was repeated two more times to produce a total of about 1.2 kg of the aluminum pigment coated with the blue dye-modified silicon dioxide.
    b) 1000 g of the pigment obtained in step a) were subsequently coated with titanium dioxide analogously to Example 3b).
The pigment obtained had a silicon content of 27.3% by weight, a carbon content of 8.0% by weight and a titanium content of 6.9% by weight. When applied, it showed a strong, greenish blue interference color when viewed from above, which changed to dark blue with increasing oblique vision.
