Abstract

The device comprises a grid of photodetectors which is coordinated with a grid of light-emitting picture elements. The light emitted by at least one of the picture elements is reflected to at least one of the photodetectors when an object approaches the device. The output signals produced by the photodetectors indicate which of the photodetectors have received reflected light.

Description

Die Erfindung betrifft eine Einrichtung zur Eingabe von Informationen. The invention relates to a device for entering Information.

For entering information related to a Various devices have become known on the screen. For example, it is known with a so-called Pointing light pen at a screen. In the top of the light pen, a photodetector is arranged, the one Output signal when the write beam of the Screen the area of the Screen. From the timing of this Signals can be concluded on the location of the light pen will. On the one hand, this allows an image detail to be marked and on the other hand, can also be written on the screen.

Other facilities for entering information in the Connection with a screen are so-called Touch screen devices that are sensitive to pressure or work capacitively. Such devices are used today by Component manufacturers as an additive for picture tubes and Flat screens offered, for example in the catalog Elektronika, Munich 1995. The capacity measurement, pressure or Change in resistance in the on the screen the matrix-addressed film surface is also included corresponding computer programs identified and the in Masked functions and information or  Program steps assigned.

The object of the present invention is a device to enter information that is both as self-sufficient device as well as an add-on for a screen can be produced.

This object is achieved in that one Grid made of light-emitting picture elements Associated with photodetectors, the minimum of one of the picture elements emitted light to at least one of the photodetectors is reflected when there is a Approaching the establishment, and that out Output signals from the photodetectors obtained information which of the photodetectors is reflected light receive.

The device according to the invention enables the input of given information by pointing it. The input is controlled by the interaction of the Image playback function and the image recording function in the achieved device according to the invention. The selectable Information is provided via the image playback function of the screen programmed and are available as existing image with different brightness and possibly colors on the screen. With your finger or a reflective object can contain the information be selected by going to the area in which they are is shown, pointing and keeping the finger close to the Screen brings. The use of a light emitting pointer also possible.

The number of photodetectors and light emitting Image elements can be selected as required. For Representation of images, at the resolution of which a viewer is used to and which has a high information content  can have that of television technology and Computer screens are used to numbers of picture elements can be used - for example 600 × 800 large-scale execution of the device according to the invention, for example in A4 format, the requirements are the lithographic processes and their resolution are lower and thus the cost of the manufacturing machines relative low. These can also be modified in a more conventional way Printing machines can be realized.

As emitting picture elements can be used in picture tubes usual phosphors are used, each with Spaced and with appropriate tension charged electron sources are irradiated with electrons will. The electron sources are preferred Field emitter arrangements, which by Corpuscular beam deposition can be made.

The photodetectors can be made of nanocrystalline Composite material made by corpuscular beam-induced deposition is produced and described in German patent application 196 21 175.1 is.

Preferably in the device according to the invention provided that each have a light-emitting picture element a photodetector is assigned. It depends However, individual requirements also differ Number of picture elements and photodetectors possible.

A use of the device according to the invention as "Flat camera" is according to one embodiment of the invention thereby possible that one in front of each photodetector Converging lens is arranged.

A further development of the device according to the invention exists in that for each of a rendered mask formed screen areas that of those located therein Intensity measured with a known photodetector Background intensity is compared and that at If the background intensity exceeds an approximation of the Object is determined.

With this training, the disruptive effect of Avoid stray light that penetrates from the outside and on the other hand by the light-emitting picture elements itself is caused.

The training can preferably be designed such that the background intensity during times when the item does not approach, measure and in a memory is stored, advantageously for comparison and to determine a calculator with Image comparison routines is provided.

A particularly advantageous embodiment of the training the invention is that a memory for at least a mask is provided, preferably the mask is designed so that those areas of light-emitting picture elements in which an input should be possible, at least one predetermined Radiate light intensity. This ensures that in Area of those photodetectors that have an input should also find enough light to reflect is available.

However, to avoid that from the picture elements emitted light also reaches the photodetectors, and interferes with the evaluation, can with the invention Means be provided that the photodetectors compared to the light-emitting picture elements by a  opaque layer to be shielded. In addition or alternatively, in the device according to the invention also be provided that each within the areas those picture elements that are in the immediate vicinity of Photodetectors are located, from their output signals Information is obtained, less or none Radiate light intensity. By being different from the Light is non-directional, however sufficient lighting of the object in front of the lenses ensured in front of the photodetectors.

Another separation between ambient light and that of the picture elements emitted for the purposes of input According to another embodiment, light can thereby occur that the light emitted by the picture elements is modulated and that the output signals of the Photodetectors are passed through filters that are used for the Modulation signal are permeable.

This measure can be done for different areas different modulation signals and different filters are also used for further location selection will. In this context, it is also pointed out that the device according to the invention not only for Evaluation of a single approaching object, but also able to evaluate multiple objects is.

Bei einer anderen Weiterbildung der erfindungsgemäßen Einrichtung ist daher ein Betrieb in drei Phasen vorgesehen, wobeiFurthermore, the device according to the invention can not only be used for Entering information, but also for presentation arbitrary pictures and for taking pictures of Objects in front of the device according to the invention brought, used. Another one Further development of the device according to the invention is therefore operation in three phases is provided, whereby

During a first phase, the picture elements for playback  of an image can be controlled
  • - in einer zweiten Phase die Bildelemente kein Licht emittieren, während die Ausgangssignale der Photodetektoren zur Bildaufnahme ausgewertet werden und- in a second phase the picture elements no light emit while the output signals of the Photo detectors for image acquisition are evaluated and
In a third phase, the picture elements emit light and the output signals of the photodetectors for extraction of the information to be entered are evaluated.

If the camera function is not required, the device according to the invention without further ado with two Phases, namely the first and the third phase operated will.

This development of the invention is preferably such designed that the repetition frequency of the three or two Phases larger than those perceivable by the human eye Flicker frequency is and / or that the duration of the third phase is significantly less than the duration of the first phase. This will make the picture flicker-free ensured that largely free from interference from the is the mask shown during the input phase.

The device according to the invention can on the one hand as independent unit through training as plate-shaped body in which both the light-emitting picture elements and also the photodetectors are arranged, be formed. However, it is on the other hand, retrofitting of existing ones Screens possible through the training as a film, which the photodetectors and conductor tracks to derive the Contains output signals of the photodetectors and on a screen can be applied, which is the light-emitting Contains picture elements.

Es zeigt:Embodiments of the invention are in the drawing represented with several figures and in the following Description explained in more detail. It shows:

Fig. 6 is a schematic representation of frequency ranges for individual functions of the device according to the invention in the case of another embodiment.

In the embodiment according to FIG. 1, two parallel glass plates 1 , 2 are kept at a distance by spacers 3 , 4 and enclose an evacuated cavity. The inside of the glass plate 1 is provided with picture elements 6 , which emit light in a manner known per se from our bombardment of electrons which are generated by electron sources 7 . Image display devices of this type are described for example in DE 44 16 597 A1. An explanation is therefore not necessary to understand the present invention in detail.

There are photodetectors 8 on the glass plate 2 , each of which is arranged essentially in the focal plane of a lens 9 . There is also a description of this in DE 195 45 484 A1. The converging lenses cause light, which is incident approximately from the direction of the optical axis of the lens, to strike the associated photodetector 8 . With regard to the picture elements 6, however, the lens does not act as a converging lens, so that the picture formed by the picture elements by suitable control is visible at a larger angle.

The intensity of the light emitted by the picture elements 6 quickly decreases with distance. However, if an object 5 comes close to the device according to the invention, it is illuminated relatively brightly when the picture elements 6 are actuated appropriately and reflects light through the converging lenses 9 directed towards it to the photodetectors 8 located behind them.

The signals from the photodetectors 8 can, as is usual with other image sensors, be read out and evaluated line by line, so that signals are finally available at which point an object approaches the entire device according to the invention. Several objects can also be detected.

In order to prevent the light emitted by the picture elements in the direction of the glass plate 2 from causing the photodetectors 8 to respond, several measures are possible. For example, the picture elements can be optically shielded in the direction of the glass plate 2 with the aid of an opaque layer, an exposure of the photodetectors 8 to incident light having to be ensured by a suitable offset between the picture elements 6 on the one hand and the lenses 9 and the photodetectors 8 on the other hand .

Another possibility to impair the evaluation by light emitted backwards by the picture elements consists of those picture elements that come before or several photodetectors are arranged, whose signals should be evaluated, not to control. One in front of this Object entering photodetectors is because of the large Beam angle of the emitting neighboring picture elements also adequately lit.

Finally, the compensation of the back emitted Light at the same time as light coming from outside, the not from a nearby object is reflected, possible in that in an adjustment phase - d. that is, if there is no object near the device according to the invention is - the output signals of Photodetectors can be measured and stored. See full ad of objects approaching is then only one Comparison with the saved values required.

Fig. 2 shows a device according to the invention with a schematic representation of the control and evaluation circuits. The device according to the invention is itself divided into two parts, namely into the grid of light-emitting picture elements 10 and into a grid of photodetectors 11 . Since these two parts can serve as image reproduction and recovery devices, for the sake of simplicity they are referred to below as screen 10 and camera 11 .

In the schematic representation of the control and evaluation circuits, it is assumed that it is advantageous for many applications if the image visible to a user differs from a mask which is only displayed with the aid of the image elements, in order to provide favorable optical conditions for the evaluation of the output signals of the photodetectors. For this reason, two sources are provided for controlling the screen 10 , which selectively have access to the screen via a switch 12 . One source is a video RAM 13 , in which an image to be displayed is buffered as a line grid. The data for this are taken from a memory 14 . The image can show, for example, what is shown schematically in FIG. 3, a keyboard. However, any other image content is also possible. During a large part of the image period of, for example, 1/60 second, the image is written, as is customary when playing video signals. During this time, the changeover switch 12 is in the upper position.

During the remaining time, the changeover switch is brought into the lower position, so that a mask stored in a memory 15 acting as another source is briefly displayed on the screen 10 . In the simplest case, the mask can consist in controlling all picture elements to the highest intensity. However, other masks can also be used. An example of this will be explained later in connection with FIG. 4.

The mask can also change over time, so that the intensity of the picture elements is modulated. In order to external light influence can be compensated. Is the Modulation depending on location, can provide additional information generated about the location of the approaching object.

A processor 16 controls the entire sequence in the device according to the invention, including a raster generator 17 , 18 for the screen 10 and the camera 11 . The processor 16 also evaluates the output signals of the camera 11 previously processed at 19, for example by amplification and filtering, so that data are available at an output 20 which indicate the locations at which one or more objects approach the device according to the invention.

FIGS. 3 and 4 show a device according to the invention when used as a telephone keypad. For this purpose, signals are supplied to the screen 10 ( FIG. 2) in the image reproduction phase, which result in the image 21 shown in FIG. 3 with key images 23 , a square representing a picture element 22 in each case. For the sake of simplicity, relatively large picture elements 22 have been assumed.

During the input phase, the mask 24 shown in FIG. 4 is displayed on the screen 10 . In this case, all the picture elements except for those hatched picture elements 25 which lie in the immediate vicinity of the photodetectors 8 represented by circles in FIG. 4 are brightened. The input phase is so short that it does not interfere with the viewing of the image according to FIG. 3.

Fig. 5a shows the timing of the image reproduction stage 26 and input stage 27, the duration of which is shown enlarged. In the sequence shown in FIG. 5b, an image recording phase 28 is additionally provided, in which the screen 10 is not activated, so that the camera 11 records the image in front of it. The arrows in Figures 5a and 5b illustrate the light emitted by the picture elements in each phase and the light indicated by the photodetectors.

The spectral distribution shown in FIG. 6 can be selected in order to suppress the proportions in the output signals of the photodetectors caused by extraneous light - for example fluorescent tubes. In this case, the image frequencies used for image reproduction and image recording are in a lower frequency range 30 , while frequencies in the range 31 are used to modulate the emitted light during the input phase.
