Abstract

The invention concerns a process for preparing organically modified aerogels, in which: a) a silicic acid sol with a pH </= 4.0 is produced from an aqueous potassium silicate solution using at least one organic and/or inorganic acid; b) the resultant silicic acid sol is polycondensed by the addition of a base to form a SiO2 gel; c) the gel produced in step b) is washed with an organic solvent until the water content of the gel is </= 5 wt %; d) the gel obtained in step c) is surface-modified with at least one C1-6 alcohol; and e) the surface-modified gel obtained in step d) is dried. The process is characterized in that the at least one acid forms with the potassium silicate cations salts which are difficult to dissolve in the silicic acid sol. Before step b), the resultant salts which are difficult to dissolve are precipitated to the greatest possible extent and separated from the silicic acid sol.

Description

The invention relates to a method for producing organically modified SiO₂ aerogels using alcohols, in which the salts formed be canceled.

Aerogels, especially those with porosities over 60% and densities below 0.6 g / cm³, have an extremely low thermal conductivity and find therefore use as a heat insulation material such. B. in EP-A-0 171 722.

Aerogels in the broad sense, i.e. H. in the sense of "gel with air as Dispersants "are prepared by drying a suitable gel. The term "airgel" in this sense includes aerogels in the narrower sense, Xerogels and cryogels. A dried gel is used as an airgel in the narrower range Meaning meaning when the liquid of the gel is at temperatures above the critical temperature and starting from pressures above the critical Pressure is removed. However, if the liquid of the gel becomes subcritical, removed, for example, to form a liquid-vapor boundary phase, then the resulting gel is called a xerogel. It should be noted that it is the gels according to the invention are aerogels, in the sense of gel with air acts as a dispersant.

SiO₂ aerogels can, for example, by acid hydrolysis of Tetraethyl orthosilicate can be made in ethanol. The result of hydrolysis  a gel whose structure is determined, among other things, by temperature, pH and the duration of the gelling process is determined. However, the gel structure collapses in the general when drying the wet gels, since the drying occurring capillary forces are extremely large. This can cause the gel to collapse prevent the drying above the critical temperature and the critical pressure of the solvent is carried out. Because in this If the liquid / gaseous phase boundary disappears, the Capillary forces and the gel do not change during drying, i. H. it there is also no shrinking of the gel during drying. On this Drying technology based manufacturing processes are e.g. B. from the EP-A-0 396 076 or WO 92/03378 are known. However, this technique requires for example when using ethanol, a temperature of about 240 ° C and pressures of over 60 bar. The exchange of ethanol for CO₂ before drying lowers the drying temperature to approx. 30 ° C The pressure required is then over 70 bar.

An alternative to the above drying is a method for subcritical drying of SiO₂ gels, if they are reacted with a chlorine-containing silylating agent before drying. The SiO₂ gel can be obtained, for example, by acid hydrolysis of tetraalkoxysilanes, preferably tetraethoxysilane (TEOS), in a suitable organic solvent, preferably ethanol, by means of water. After replacing the solvent with a suitable organic solvent, the gel obtained is reacted with a chlorine-containing silylating agent in a further step. Because of their reactivity, methylchlorosilanes (Me 4-n SiCl n with n = 1 to 3) are preferably used as silylating agents. The resulting SiO₂ gel modified on the surface with methylsilyl groups can then be dried in air from an organic solvent. This enables aerogels with densities below 0.4 g / cm³ and porosities above 60% to be achieved.

The manufacturing process based on this drying technique is described in detail in WO 94/25149.

The gels described above can also be dried in the alcohol-aqueous solution are mixed with tetraalkoxysilanes and aged, to increase the gel network strength, such as B. disclosed in WO 92/20623.

The starting materials in the processes described above However, the tetraalkoxysilanes used are extremely high Cost factor. In addition, silylation using chlorine-containing Silylating agents inevitably in very large quantities of hydrogen chloride (HCl) as well as a variety of related by-products, which if necessary a very complex and costly cleaning of the silylated SiO₂ gels by washing several times with a suitable organic solvent require. The associated, particularly corrosion-resistant Production facilities are also very expensive. That with the emergence very much Large amounts of HCl gas associated security risk is still required a very complex technology and is therefore also very cost-intensive.

A first not inconsiderable cost reduction can be achieved by using water glass as the starting material for the production of the SiO₂ gels. For this purpose, for example, a silica can be prepared from an aqueous water glass solution with the aid of an ion exchange resin, which is polycondensed to an SiO₂ gel by adding a base. After replacing the aqueous medium with a suitable organic solvent, the gel obtained is then reacted with a chlorine-containing silylating agent in a further step. Because of their reactivity, methylchlorosilanes (Me 4-n SiCl n with n = 1 to 3) are also preferably used as silylating agents. The resulting SiO₂ gel modified on the surface with methylsilyl groups can then also be dried in air from an organic solvent. The manufacturing process based on this technique is used e.g. B. disclosed in DE-A-43 42 548.

The one described above with the use of chlorine Silylating problems associated with the extremely high However, procedural costs are due to the use of water glass Starting material not solved.

The German patent application P 1 95 02 453.2 describes the use of a chlorine-free silylating agent. To this end, the silicate lyogel obtained in the above-described processes is introduced in different ways and reacted with a chlorine-free silylating agent. Methylisopropenoxysilanes (Me 4-n Si (OC (CH₃) CH₂) n with n = 1 to 3) are preferably used as silylating agents. The resulting SiO₂ gel modified on the surface with methylsilyl groups can then be dried in air from an organic solvent.

The use of chlorine-free silylating agents does make the problem the formation of HCl dissolved, however, the chlorine-free used Silylating agents are also an extremely high cost factor.

WO 95/06617 discloses hydrophobic silica aerogels which by reacting a water glass solution with an acid at a pH from 7.5 to 11, extensive liberation of the silica hydrogel formed from ionic components by washing with water or dilute aqueous Solutions of inorganic bases, the pH of the hydrogel in the range is kept from 7.5 to 11, displacement of those contained in the hydrogel aqueous phase by an alcohol and subsequent supercritical Drying the alkogel obtained are available.

Als Alkohole eignen sich dabei für den Wasseraustausch C₁-C₅-Alkohole, vorzugsweise C₃-C₅-Alkohole, insbesondere Isopropanol.Suitable alcohols for water exchange are C₁-C₅ alcohols, preferably C₃-C₅ alcohols, especially isopropanol.

It is known that when using the above alcohols under supercritical conditions (WO 95/06617) for esterification of the alcohol used comes with the surface OH groups of the lyogel. This can alkoxy-modified aerogels such. B. isopropoxy modified Aerogels are obtained which have hydrophobic surface groups.

A disadvantage of the manufacturing process disclosed in WO 95/06617 is however, that supercritical drying conditions are needed e.g. B. for isopropanol at a temperature in the range of 240 to 280 ° C and at a pressure of about 55 to 90 bar.

Another unsolved problem is that in the manufacture of aerogels from water glass resulting aqueous salt solutions Water glass solution in a condensable silica sol must transfer the cations (mostly sodium and / or potassium ions) in the Water glass solution can be exchanged for protons. You can do this organic or inorganic acids can be used. The one there inevitably also in solution, formed salts of the above Cations (e.g. NaCl or Na₂SO₄) must be before, during or after the Aging can be washed out of the gel. This very dilute, watery Saline solutions are a major disposal problem today as they are in larger quantities are no longer easily discharged into rivers and lakes may be. A repository that complies with current regulations these solutions represent an extremely high cost factor.

The object of the present invention was therefore to provide a method for Production of aerogels with hydrophobic surface groups  To provide that none of the above and therefore from the prior has known problems in the art. In particular, that should Method according to the invention inexpensive and simple in terms of process technology to be carried out.

Another object of the present invention was to provide a method for To provide production of organically modified SiO₂ aerogels, in which no dilute aqueous salt solutions are obtained.

The polycondensation of the essentially salt-free obtained after step a) Silica sol to an SiO₂ gel is carried out in step b) by adding a base in a pH range between 3.0 and 7.0, preferably 4.0 and 6.0. In addition, the gel obtained in step c) can additionally be one Be subjected to solvent exchange. When changing solvents in principle, the same solvents are used as for Wash in step c). The preferred solvents for washing are also preferred when changing solvents.

Solvent exchange is not just a one-time exchange of Understand solvent, but possibly also the multiple Repeat with different solvents.

The lyogel obtained in step c) can also be subjected to further aging undergo. This generally happens between 20 ° C and the boiling point of the organic solvent. If necessary, also under pressure aged at higher temperatures. The alcohol is generally used in an amount of 1 to 100% by weight, based on the total solvent used.

The alcohols can be used alone, in mixtures or with other non-reactive organic solvents or solvent mixtures, such as. B. acetone, Tetrahydrofuran, dioxane, n-hexane or toluene can be used.

The temperatures and pressures for surface modification depend on each used solvent or solvent mixture. However, they lie well below the critical temperature and pressure of the alcohols used.

A temperature between 25 ° C. and 220 ° C. is preferred, particularly preferred between 150 and 220 ° C.

Vorzugsweise verwendet man Trimethylchlorsilan. If necessary, small amounts of a silylating agent can also be added. Suitable silylating agents are generally silanes of the formulas R¹ 4-n SiCl n or R¹ 4-n Si (OR²) n with n = 1 to 3, where R¹ and R² are independently C₁-C₆-alkyl, cyclohexyl or phenyl. Isopropenoxysilanes and silazanes are also suitable. Trimethylchlorosilane is preferably used. In addition, all silylating agents known to the person skilled in the art can be used, for example also those as disclosed in DE-A-44 30 669.

The amounts are generally between 0 and 1 wt .-% (based on the Lyogel), concentrations between 0 and 0.5% by weight are preferred, particularly preferably between 0 and 0.2% by weight.

The pressures used in the drying are preferably at 0.001 to 20 bar, particularly preferably at 0.01 to 5 bar.

The gel obtained in step d) can also be dried supercritically. This requires higher temperatures than the respective solvent 200 ° C and / or pressures higher than 20 bar. This is easily possible, however it is associated with increased effort and has no significant advantages with yourself.

Drying is generally continued until the gel unites Has residual solvent content of less than 0.1 wt .-%.

Also prior to gel preparation, the sol can be used to increase the mechanical stability fibers are added. As fiber materials can inorganic fibers, such as glass fibers or mineral fibers, organic fibers, such as polyester fibers, aramid fibers, nylon fibers or vegetable fibers Origin, as well as mixtures thereof are used. The fibers can also be coated, e.g. B. polyester fibers with a metal such as aluminum are metallized.

In a further embodiment, depending on the application, the gel can also be subjected to a network reinforcement before the surface modification. This is done by the gel obtained with a solution of a condensable alkyl and / or aryl orthosilicate of the formula R¹ 4-n Si (OR²) n , where n = 2 to 4 and R¹ and R² independently linear or branched C₁ -C₆-alkyl radicals, cyclohexyl radicals or phenyl radicals, or reacted with an aqueous silica solution. This network reinforcement can be carried out before and / or after each aging step or solvent exchange carried out.

In a further preferred embodiment, the gel has the Drying a modulus of elasticity greater than 3 MPa, one surface according to BET, which is less than 700 m² / g and a pore radius distribution, those in the range from 2 to 20 nm, preferably in the range from 5 to 10 nm, is therefore the aerogels obtained after the subcritical drying preferably a density of 200 kg / m³, particularly preferably of  Have 150 kg / m³.

Beispiel 1example 1

Danach wurde das entstandene Hydrogel 2,5 Stunden bei 85°C gealtert.236 g of a 25% H₂SO₄ cooled to 0 ° C were added dropwise with 707 g of a sodium water glass solution cooled to 7 ° C (with a content of 17% by weight SiO₂ and a Na₂O: SiO₂ ratio of 1: 3.3). A pH of 1.6 was established. The precipitated Na₂SO₄ * 10 H₂O was separated from the silica sol at 0 ° C using a suction filter and the silica sol was diluted with 280 ml H₂O. The silica sol thus obtained was mixed at a temperature of 5 ° C. with stirring with 26 ml of a 1N NaOH solution in order to set a pH of 4.7. The resulting hydrogel was then aged at 85 ° C. for 2.5 hours.

It was with  Washed 2 l warm water and then extracted with isopropanol, until the water content in the gel was below 2.0% by weight. Then that was Lyogel containing isopropanol in isopropanol in an autoclave at 220 ° C and heated to a pressure of 40 bar and 3 hours under these conditions held. The gel was dried in air (3 hours at 40 ° C, then 2 Hours at 50 ° C and 12 hours at 150 ° C).

Der λ-Wert lag bei 0,018 W/mK.The transparent airgel thus obtained had a density of 0.15 g / cm³. The specific surface area according to BET was 500 m² / g. The λ value was included 0.018 W / mK.

B. O. Nielsson, G. Rüschenpöhler, J. Groß, J. Fricke, High Temperatures - High Pressures, Vol. 21, 267-274 (1989)) gemessen. The thermal conductivity was determined using a heating wire method (see e.g. O. Nielsson, G. Rüschenpöhler, J. Groß, J. Fricke, High Temperatures - High Pressures, Vol. 21, 267-274 (1989)).
