Abstract
Description
The invention relates to an autostereoscopic Adapter for a flat screen, in particular for an LCD, TFT or plasma screen, for stereoscopic screen display by adaptive image strip combing the flat screen, the autostereoscopic adapter being a lenticular lens contains which has a lenticular grid for pixel-by-pixel image separation. The The invention further relates to a method for calibrating the autostereoscopic according to the invention Adapters and an indication of how to use the autostereoscopic Adapter.
Stereoscopic devices Basically, images are from film technology for 3D cinemas known where with polarized light for image projection and one Polarizing glasses are used to view the image. The principle the sequential stereo image display, however, requires a fast, alternating reproduction of images from the viewing angles in each case of the left and right eye on a display level, regardless of whether on a cinema screen or a TV or PC screen. The viewer must do so the images through electronically controlled shutter glasses (so-called liquid crystal shutters, LCS) see the two liquid crystal elements owns and is synchronized with the image signal source in such a way that the left LC element of the glasses is switched transparent when the image from the perspective of the left eye on the The screen appears, at the same time the right LC element is switched opaque. The picture is reversed for move the right eye. The sluggishness of the human eye leaves the merge the two partial images into a stereoscopic image impression.
The main areas of application 3D technology includes 3D television, 3D cinema, CAD (Computer Aided Design), CAT (Computer Aided Topography), civil and military air surveillance (Air traffic control), medical technology (stereoscopic transmission operations in lecture halls, computer tomography, Ultrasonography), chemistry (representation of molecular models), driving and flight simulators, or video games, to name just a few examples. The disadvantage with these known Above all, the procedure is that on the part of the viewer, visual aids are fundamentally must be used. When implementing the sequential process in screen technology is next to the glasses, which is disadvantageously a not insignificant Part of the light is absorbed, usually a special monitor is required. Such monitors must have a relatively high frame rate of around 120 Hz, what because of the sluggishness of the liquid crystal from currently known LCD flat screens is not reached. Therefore, flat screens are not currently to display three-dimensional images based on those known from cinema technology Suitable method.
Of importance for stereoscopic imaging of images is also the lenticular process, in which a raster, which are the stereo fields for the Separate eyes, is integrated into the picture. The picture contains Striped partial images of a 3D scene. The eyes of the beholder see two slightly different when viewed through the grid Images that create a spatial impression in the viewer's brain. In earlier times, the image was streaked mechanically or optically, what today through three-dimensional design software happens. Image sources can be both Partial images recorded with a camera as well as generated on the computer be virtual material. It is also conceivable that real recordings in Successive process with a movable on a circular arc segment Camera are made. The lenticular process is known before everything from 3D postcards and flip images, but it is also suitable for the Use on a flat screen. With this technique it is already possible, spatial images without depicting the use of special glasses. However, since that 3D method according to this autostereoscopic based on lenticular grid Principle works only with a left and a right field, So it’s two-channel depends the three-dimensional effect achieved strongly from the position of the Viewer relative to the screen. To avoid this disadvantage so-called head tracking can be used. The basis for the technology forms an LCD monitor using the lenticular method optically separates the stereo image into individual images for the left and right eyes. A so-called head tracking camera measures the head position of the Viewer and leads the stereo image according to the head movements (see radio show 15/98). Because of the need for the head tracking camera, this is However, the process is relatively complex to implement in reality. Furthermore, has shown that in particular the reduction in horizontal resolution and occurring moiré and color disorders lead to a clear negative influence on the image quality.

The strip grid is suitable, however not for the development of a stereoscopic adapter since the grid plate with extreme precision must be permanently adjusted in front of the LCD. The grid creates also a loss of light of 7/8 of the total brightness, which is only due to special backlight adapted to the performance of the LCD panels can be compensated. It also shows that as a lenticular grid only a specially calculated and manufactured Lenticular grid can be used in which the focal length of the Individual lenses must be long enough to pass through the top cover of the Displays on the actual imaging layer of the pixels of the Flat screen can be focused. This lenticular grid must furthermore already installed during the production of the monitor such a monitor is only suitable for Representation of 3-D images, which is a conventional 2D representation then no longer possible with this screen.

Because of the disadvantages of the The prior art method for 3D screen display is the present Invention, the object of an apparatus for autostereoscopic Representation for specify a flat screen, which without mechanical tracking of the Lenticular grid and without polarizing glasses, the device for autostereoscopic display without great effort in the shortest possible time with a conventional one Flat screen can be used for three-dimensional screen display can. The present invention is also based on the object a method for calibration of the autostereoscopic device according to the invention and the use of the device for three-dimensional representation to specify moving images.
This task is done with an autostereos Copy adapter for a flat screen, in particular for an LCD, TFT or plasma screen, for stereoscopic screen display by adaptive image strip combing on the flat screen, with a lenticular screen, which has a lenticular screen for pixel-wise image separation, solved according to the invention in that the lenticular screen detachably on the outside of the Screen surface is arranged and the lenticular screen of the lenticular lens facing inward towards the screen surface.
The basis of the present invention technical problem regarding the calibration of the autostereoscopic The adapter is further implemented according to the invention by a method for calibration following process steps solved: On the outside the screen surface a flat screen becomes a spacer and / or a lenticular lens appropriate; a suitable test image is shown on the flat screen; relevant parameters of the specific lens grid / screen combination are hired; and the relevant parameters of the specific lenticular / screen combination are saved as calibration parameters.
Furthermore, that of the invention underlying task by using an autostereoscopic Adapters met, where the use is characterized by a stereoscopic screen display moving images on a flat screen, which with the autostereoscopic according to the invention Adapter is equipped.
The advantages of the invention lie especially in that in an easy to implement way a conventional one Flat screen can be converted to stereoscopic screen display can. Because of the detachable Arrangement of the lenticular screen from the outside is on the screen surface it is no longer necessary for the lenticular disk to be firmly in place the flat screen is fixed or installed. Hence it is possible, a conventional one Flat screen according to the invention by arrangement the lenticular screen as a 3D flat screen for stereoscopic Use screen display, the screen again to the conventional two-dimensional image display by removing the lenticular screen can be used. Because the lenticular grid of the lenticular lens pointing inwards towards the screen surface, it is possible to commercial, for the Printing technology produced grid plates use what the cost to implement the solution according to the invention clearly reduced. This is conceivable for example a conventional one Use 40 lpi grid from MicroLens (U.S.A.). Anyone can Flat screen in the shortest Time can be converted to a 3D screen by connecting the grid plate. Due to the inward lenticular grid, the surface of the Screen flat, which among other things, the mechanical sensitivity (Scratch) reduced, the sensitivity to disturbing stray light reduced and an anti-reflective coating on the flat surface an anti-reflective coating or multilayer coating.
With the method according to the invention becomes a possibility for calibration of the autostereoscopic described above Adapters specified. This is an easy to implement and very effective procedure for adjustment or calibration the lenticular screen / screen configuration. Because of the simple Calibration, with which any flat screen regarding the autostereoscopic adapter can be adjusted, it is conceivable the adapter according to the invention not only in the design construction, but across the board, for example, with every LCD flat screen sold.
The use according to the invention gives one possibility with which animations or video or film sequences are three-dimensional can be represented the implementation for this especially simple and inexpensive is to be realized.
Preferred developments of the invention are in terms of of the adapter in subclaims 2 to 8 and regarding of the method specified in subclaim 10.
So it is in one possible Realization of the autostereoscopic according to the invention Adapters provided that the lenticular disc immediately on the screen surface is arranged. This has the advantage of being manufactured as well the handling of the adapter, which in this embodiment available as a single component, extremely simple is.
To achieve a high spatial resolution and sharpness is the exact focusing of the lenticular grid on the sub-pixel level of the screen used. This is preferred provided by the use of a transparent spacer, which are arranged between the lenticular screen and the screen surface becomes. Such a spacer is already commercially available available which simplifies the implementation of the training according to the invention. Instead of a washer also conceivable between the lenticular screen and the screen surface Form air gap in order to optimize the resolving power achieve. Of course but here are other embodiments conceivable. The spacer can, similar to the lenticular disk, solvable on the screen surface be attached. Would be conceivable but also to integrate the spacer firmly in the screen, for example by gluing the spacer on the surface of the screen. By the fixed integration of the spacer would also be the 2D viewing mode of the flat screen are not affected.
The spacer particularly preferably has a predetermined thickness of about 1 mm, which on the one hand is more advantageous The weight of the entire autostereoscopic adapter is extremely low is held and on the other hand the best possible image quality can be achieved is.
In an advantageous further training of the adapter according to the invention is provided, the spacer and the lenticular disk sandwiched as a detachable unit from the screen surface. This is a compact design of the autostereoscopic adapter given what makes handling this essential in daily use simplified.
As material for the lenticular screen disk or for the spacer disk becomes a translucent and in particular mechanically flexible material such as Cellon or a similar one Plastic, used. As a result, the adapter according to the invention on the one hand, particularly easy to care for and weatherproof and on the other hand can be effectively prevented by the assembly of the adapter on the screen surface is scratched or otherwise damaged. Of course other materials are also conceivable here.
For particularly easy handling when mounting the adapter according to the invention on the screen surface a fastening device is provided in one embodiment. This Fastening device can be a clamping device in which the adapter is clamped for safe and traceable installation become. Such a clamping device further enables that the adapter can be removed from the screen surface in a few simple steps can be what happens when switching from 3D mode to 2D mode operation of the monitor is required. Of course but other mounting devices are also conceivable to a flat screen monitor with the adapter according to the invention retrofit. Completeness for the sake of this here are elastic bands or belts or clip devices called. The lower edge of the screen section can be used as the contact edge for the precise angular position of the lenticular grid, tolerances being compensated for using software become.
It is particularly advantageous that the images displayed in 3D viewing mode through a transformation the associated 3D coordinates converted into the image space of the flat screen become. In principle, this is already state of the art known so that to implement the adapter according to the invention on commercially available components, such as a 3D renderer, who converted the images into strips broken down into strips can be. this leads to in a particularly advantageous way to reduce costs in the Implementation of the invention.
For the method is preferably provided for the calibration of the Screen lenticular disk configuration automatically by means of an electronic sensor device, in particular an electro-optical sensor device. So it is conceivable to integrate this sensor into the monitor in the future. The sensor has the task of calibrating using suitable test images the screen / grid combination automatically. Relevant parameters are the angular position of the electronic image strip combing to compensate for manufacturing tolerances of the grid plate as well as the number of partial images that are shown under the individual lenses can be. The latter is dependent the distance of the LCD subpixels, the so-called “dot pitch ", which at every screen and manufacturer can be different. The higher the screen resolution, the more less must same area be the dot pitch. It is also conceivable that an automatic setting the relevant parameters by querying the automatic detection of the Flat screen, for example in a Windows database. Of course other methods are also conceivable here.
The following is a preferred one embodiment the invention explained in more detail with reference to drawings.
