Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a photoactive component with organic layers, in particular a solar cell according to the preamble of claim 1.
Since the demonstration of the first organic solar cell by Tang et al. 1986 [CW Tang et al. Appl. Phys. Lett. 48, 183 ( 1986 )], organic materials are currently being intensively investigated for various electronic and optoelectronic components. Organic solar cells consist of a sequence of thin (typically 1 nm to 1 µm) layers of organic materials, which are preferably evaporated in vacuo or spun in their polymeric form. The electrical contact is usually made through metal layers.
A solar cell converts light energy into electrical energy.
In contrast to inorganic solar cells, in organic solar cells the Light does not directly generate free charge carriers, but rather excitons are formed electrically neutral excitation states (bound electron-hole pairs). Only in one second step, these excitons are separated into free charge carriers, which are then used for contribute to electrical current flow.
The advantage of such organic-based components over conventional inorganic-based components (semiconductors such as silicon, gallium arsenide) are the extremely high optical absorption coefficients (up to 2 × 10 5 cm -1 ), so that there is the possibility of using low material - and energy expenditure to produce very thin solar cells. Other technological aspects are the low costs, the possibility of producing flexible, large-area components on plastic films, and the almost unlimited variation possibilities of organic chemistry.
Diode:
- 1. Träger, Substrat,
- 2. Grundkontakt, meist transparent,
- 3. n-Schicht(en) (bzw. p),
- 4. p-Schicht(en) (bzw. n),
- 5. Deckkontakt.
- 1. carrier, substrate,
- 2. Basic contact, mostly transparent,
- 3. n-layer (s) (or p),
- 4. p-layer (s) (or n),
- 5. Deck contact.
Here, n or p means an n or p doping. Can between the n and p layers undoped layers are still present. Through the transparent basic contact incident light creates excitons in the n-layer (or p-layer). These excitons can only be separated by very high electrical fields or at suitable interfaces become. Sufficiently high fields are not available in organic solar cells, so that all promising concepts for organic solar cells on exciton separation based on photoactive interfaces. The excitons reach the by diffusion Interface between the p and n regions, where electrons and holes from each other be separated. The electrons are now in the built-in electric field of the solar cell in the n-area and the holes in the p-area.
Since excitons are always generated by the light and no free charge carriers, the low recombination diffusion of excitons to the active interface plays a critical role Role in organic solar cells.
The doping of organic materials is known from US Pat. No. 5,093,698: by admixture an acceptor-type or donor-type dopant Equilibrium carrier concentration in the layer increases and the conductivity increased. According to US 5,093,698, the doped layers are used as injection layers on the Interface to the contact materials used in electroluminescent devices.

The admixtures in the layers in points 3. ) To 7.) are not in the sense of electrical doping.
As explained above, the excitons have to reach an interface in order to contribute to the photocurrent. In a good organic solar cell, the exciton diffusion length must therefore clearly exceed the typical penetration depth of the light so that the majority of the light can be used. Structurally and in terms of chemical purity, perfect organic crystals or thin layers certainly meet this criterion. Accordingly, the highest efficiency achieved to date for an organic solar cell (4.5%) was also achieved with a monocrystalline organic material [JH Schön, C. Kloc, E. Bucher, B. Batlogg, Nature, 403, 408 ( 2000 )]. For large-area applications, however, the use of monocrystalline organic materials is not possible and the production of multiple layers with sufficient structural perfection has so far been very difficult.
Instead of increasing the exciton diffusion length, you can also use the mean distance up to reduce the next interface. From WO 00/33396 the formation of a so-called interpenetrating network known: one layer contains a colloidally dissolved substance, which is distributed in such a way that a network forms over which charge carriers can flow (Percolation). The task of light absorption takes over in such Network either only one of the components or both. The advantage of this The mixed layer is that the excitons generated only have to travel a very short distance until they reach a domain boundary where they are separated. The removal of the Electrons or holes occur separately in the dissolved substance or in the rest of the layer.
Sariciftci, J. C. Hummelen, Advanced Functional Materials 11, 15 (2001)]. Since the materials in the mixed layer are in contact with each other everywhere, it is crucial with this concept that the separated charges have a long service life on the respective material. With this approach, efficiencies of 2.5% could be achieved [CJ Brabec, N. 5. Sariciftci, JC Hummelen, Advanced Functional Materials 11, 15 ( 2001 )].
The critical point with interpenetrating networks is that in the mixed layer closed transport paths for both electrons and holes to their respective Contacts must be present. Since the individual materials also only have one Filling part of the mixed layer, the transport properties for the deteriorate Charge carriers clearly compared to the pure layers.
The object of the invention is to provide a photoactive component based on a Interpenetrating network to indicate the improved transport properties for the Has charge carriers.
According to the invention the object is in connection with that in the preamble of claim 1 Features mentioned solved in that the mixed layer, which is an interpenetrating Network forms a small addition of a third component, namely one strong acceptor or donor, is doped, the doping being chosen so that it is only affects one of the two main materials.
In such a doped material there is an increased concentration of a charge carrier type already reached in thermal equilibrium. According to the removal of the photogenerated charge carriers as follows: the doped material ensures efficient Transport of the majority load carriers. The undoped material ensures the transport of the Minority carriers.
The advantage over an undoped network is that in the doped material the transport properties for the majority load carriers are much better. So that can the mixing ratio of the two main materials in favor of the undoped material be moved. This now fills a larger part of the mixed layer, with which also improve the transport properties for the minority load carriers.
The correct choice of the doping concentration and the mixing ratio can help of the two main materials a significant increase in transport properties for both Load carriers can be reached.

Accordingly, the component advantageously consists of two organic charge carrier transport layers ( 2 and 7 ), contact layers ( 1 and 8 ) and a layer system ( 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ) located between the organic layer ( 2 ) and the organic layer ( 7 ) which the light is absorbed. Layers 3 and 6 are p or n-doped, layers 4 and 5 are undoped or essentially very weakly p- or n-doped. The layers 3 , 4 , 5 and 6 are either one component (apart from the doping) or they are mixed layers of two components. The materials are selected so that excitons at the internal phase boundaries in the mixed layer between the two materials are efficiently separated into free charge carriers.
The charge carrier transport layers 2 and 7 are not photoactive and can be doped or undoped. The type of doping (p or n) is identical to the adjacent doped mixed layer. Each load carrier transport layer ensures the efficient removal of a load carrier type. They also separate the mixed layers from the contacts and thus prevent the excitons in the mixed layers from recombining at the contacts.
Löcher werden in entgegengesetzte Richtungen abtransportiert: The two undoped mixed layers 4 and 5 can optionally be dispensed with. Both main materials or only one can absorb the light in the mixed layers. The idea of the above structure is to use an n-mixed layer and a p-mixed layer instead of an n-single layer and a p-single layer (cf. the simple structure of an organic solar cell given above). Each of the two mixed layers is photoactive, ie excitons are generated in each mixed layer, the excitons are separated at the internal phase boundaries and electrons or holes are transported away in opposite directions:
To illustrate the mode of operation, it is assumed below that the first mixed layer is n-doped. For a better overview, it is also assumed that the two undoped mixed layers 4 and 5 are missing. An egg is said to have been generated in the undoped material of the first mixed layer by the light. The exciton diffuses in this material until it reaches the undoped material at a domain boundary. Here it is separated, whereby the hole remains in the undoped material and the electron changes into the doped one. The electron then migrates in the doped material to the adjacent charge carrier transport layer, from which it is transported away for contact. The hole in the undoped material moves to the interface with the second mixed layer. Here it is taken over by the p-doped main material of the second mixed layer and transported through the second mixed layer. In the end, the second charge carrier transport layer takes care of the transport of the hole to the contact.
Der Abtransport der in der p-Mischschicht erzeugten Ladungsträger verläuft entsprechend. The transport of the charge carriers generated in the p-mixed layer proceeds accordingly.
The mode of operation of the component is explained in more detail below using an energy scheme. Figure 2 shows the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) and LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) levels of layers 3 to 6 . The order from left to right is p-doped mixed layer 3 , undoped mixed layer 4 , undoped mixed layer 5 and n-doped mixed layer 6 . In the individual mixed layers, the solid lines represent the levels of one material and the dashed lines represent the levels of the other material. The light is now said to have produced an exciton in a material of the second mixed layer. This material is characterized by the solid lines. The hole remains in the material while the electron changes over to the other (situation shown in Figure 2). A change is possible because the electron takes on a state of lower energy in the other material. The energy levels of the materials involved are now selected so that the hole can migrate into the mixed layer 1 . Ideally, the energy levels meet here directly.
According to the invention, the doping is chosen so that it only affects one of the two Main materials in the mixed layer affects. For this it is advantageous if one Material in polycrystalline form and the other in amorphous form. The Dotand is mainly in the amorphous area, so that due to the spatial separation it is guaranteed that the dopant only affects the amorphous component.
In the case of molecular organic systems, the molar doping concentrations are typically in the range from 1:10 to 1: 10,000. If the dopants are significantly smaller than the matrix molecules can, in exceptional cases, more dopants than matrix molecules in the Be shift (up to 5: 1). The dopants can be organic or inorganic.
The domains in the mixed layers preferably have a size of 1 nm to 1 μm.
7 fehlen. It is also within the scope of the invention if one of the two layers referred to as mixed layers consists only of one main material or if a mixed layer is completely absent. One or both charge carrier transport layers 2 and 7 may also be missing.
The mixed layers 3 to 6 can consist of the same main materials and differ only in their doping and possibly in the material mixing ratio.
A preferred embodiment of the component according to the invention is characterized in that the layers 3 and 4 consist of one material or a material mixture and the layers 5 and 6 consist of another material or a different material mixture. The layers 3 and 4 or 5 and 6 can differ from one another in their doping and possibly in the material mixing ratio. It is particularly advantageous if the layers 3 and 4 absorb in a different wavelength range than the layers 5 and 6 , so that the solar spectrum can be used as completely as possible.
In particular, it is advantageous that one of the mixed layers consists of a mixture of a phthalocyanine complex (Pc) and the fullerene C 60 , the phthalocyanine being e.g. B. is doped by the strong organic acceptor tetra-fluoro-tetracyanochino-dimethane (F 4 -TCNQ).
Another advantageous embodiment of the component is characterized in that at least one mixed layer consists of four materials, d. H. from two main materials and two dopants. The two dopants are a strong acceptor and a strong donor. According to the invention, each dopant affects only one of the two main materials that the mixed layer consists of an n-doped portion and a p-doped portion. In particular, it is expedient for a complete charge transfer from each dopant on exactly one of the main materials. This energetically preferred situation causes the dopants to collect and accumulate primarily in this main material thus only affect this.
