Übungsgeräte üblicher Bauart zum Trainieren der Schultermuskulatur/Rotatorenmanschette nutzen als Widerstand ein Gewicht, einen Feder-, einen Pneumatik- oder einen Hydraulikmechanismus. Bei Übungsgeräten mit Gewichten ist der Widerstand dem Gewicht proportional. Üblicherweise wird hierbei nur ein Arm zurzeit, und ferner nur die Innen- oder die Außenrotation trainiert. Übungsgeräte dieser Art sind meist stationär. Bei Geräten mit Federmechanismus ist der Widerstand nicht konstant, sondern abhängig vom Federweg. Ein gängiges Gerät nach diesem Prinzip in der physiotherapeutischen Anwendung zum Trainieren der Rotatorenmanschette ist das Theraband. Hierbei ist eine Bewegungsführung durch das Gerät nicht vorgegeben. Bei Übungsgeräten auf pneumatischer Basis stellt sich der konkrete Widerstand nicht sofort ein, sondern ist auf Grund der Kompressibilität des Mediums abhängig von den Parametern Arbeitsweg und Geschwindigkeit. Das Medium Luft wirkt hierbei wie eine Feder. Zusammendrückbare Geräte trainieren die Innenrotatoren, auseinanderziehbare Geräte trainieren die Außenrotatoren. Beide Funktionen zusammen zum Trainieren der Rotatorenmanschette sind bei den marktgängigen Geräten nicht möglich. Bei Geräten mit hydraulischer Anwendung sind die Kräfte geschwindigkeitsabhängig. Zusätzlich lässt sich die Dämpfungsintensität manuell einstellen. Durch die Bauweise des Gerätes ist die korrekte Bewegungsrichtung vorgegeben. Durch die Möglichkeit der Abstandsveränderung der Handgriffe lässt sich das Gerät an die individuelle Körpergröße anpassen.
