发明背景
现代世界具有的大量多媒体内容和各种各样的传送选择,给予我们大量的选择种类和范围。有线和卫星电视传送数以百计的、各自携带不同节目的不同频道。当前,超过500个不同的节目频道由有线电视服务播放。要预订诸如卫星和有线电视的服务,收视者有不同的对部分或所有节目的付费选择。例如,收视者按它们观看的节目付费,或者对特定频道的或一组频道的所有节目按月支付统一费用。然而,收视者即使可能只对预订某些频道或节目感兴趣,也必须为整个一揽子电视节目付费。因此,本发明提供一种收视者为电视频道或演出付费的可供选择的方法。
发明内容
本发明的目的是提供一种按照根据用户过去的收视历史、明确输入的偏好或者从收视者对多个演出的反馈中得出的偏好简档的用户偏好预订电视节目的系统和方法。
按照本发明的一个方面,提供一种定制预订计划的方法。该方法包括以下步骤:接收来自多个频道的多个节目;监视用户观看的每个节目以便生成表明用户所观看的特定节目的频率的用户简档;根据用户简档建议多个预订计划;选择在用户简档中提供的至少一个节目或一个频道以供将来预订;和显示所述被选择的节目供收视。用户简档的内容被按照预定的标准分类,并且也为反映用户变化的偏好而被更新。该方法进一步包括将所述被选择的节目存储在存储介质中以供后来重放的步骤。

图1表示本发明的优选实施例可以被应用的常规电视系统2和接收器10。接收器10也可以包括其它个人记录装置,诸如ReplayTV(位于美国加州Palo Alto的REPLAY NETWORKS,Inc.公司的商标)和TiVo(位于美国加州Sunnyvale的TiVo,Inc.公司的商标),这些装置赋予电视收视者以捕获和操纵从它们的有线和卫星系统流出的电视演出流的新能力。如图1中所示,接收器10被配置成接收来自一个源(s)的声频和视频演出,该源诸如是常规电视(TV)广播,以及其它各种源,包括有线服务提供商、数字高清晰度电视(HDTV)和/或数字标准清晰度电视(SDTV)信号、碟式卫星天线、常规RF广播、因特网连接、或其它存储装置,诸如VHS播放器或DVD播放器。声频和视频节目能以模拟、数字或压缩数字的格式通过包括卫星、电缆、电线、电视广播的任何传输装置传送,或通过网络(Web)发送。应当注意的是,本发明也能连接到其它可能的网络,诸如直接专用网络和无限网络。
按照本发明实施例,收视者能以不同方式选择节目和为节目付费。第一,收视者能选择它们感兴趣的特定频道或演出并为之付费。此外,收视者能选择由接收器10根据过去的收视历史、偏好或用户简档建议的一些或所有演出并为之付费。为做到这一点,接收器10检测来自多个不同频道的输入电视节目并维持一个含有特定收视者的收视历史的数据库,然后确定收视者观看的或不观看的电视节目的类型或频道。注意,接收器10可以包括一个能专用于接收来自不同的源的电子节目指南(EPG)的单独频道。之后,按照过去的收视历史生成一个关于收视者喜欢观看的节目或频道的类型的建议。因此,接收器10为收视者提供对选定数量的节目/频道的付费的选项,使得收视者只需要某些节目/频道时,不必为整个一揽子电视节目付费。
图2更详细地例示按照本发明实施例的示例性接收器10。接收器10包括用于按照收视者的输入(I)由收视者以交互方式进行频道的选择的输入接口(即IR传感器)12、MPEG-2编码器14、硬盘驱动器16、MPEG-2解码器18、控制器20、节目检测器22、视频处理器23、存储器26和回放部分28。应当注意的是,MPEG编码器/解码器可符合MPEG标准,即MPEG-1、MPEG-2、MPEG-4和MPEG-7。控制器20监视接收器10的总体操作,包括检测方式、记录方式、播放方式和在个人记录装置中通用的其它方式。
在正常方式下,控制器20使输入电视信号被视频处理器24解调和处理,并将它们传送到电视机2供显示。然后,视频处理器24将输入电视信号转换到成适合在电视机2上显示的相应的基带电视信号。
在记录方式期间,控制器20使MPEG-2编码器14接收从卫星、电缆、电线和电视广播或网络(web)之类的源(S)传送的输入电视信号,并将所接收的TV信号转换成适合于在硬盘驱动器16上存储的MPEG格式。之后,控制器20使硬盘驱动器16把所存储的电视信号流到MPEG-2解码器,后者又把要传输的解码的TV信号通过回放部分28传送到电视机2供显示。
同时,视频信息被输入到节目检测器22,在这里按照预先设置的分类方式分析视频信息。为此,可以利用一种有名的电子节目指南(EPG)协议。EPG是一种标准的应用程序,设计用来辅助收视者在TV环境中可得到的广播材料中进行导航和做出选择。EPG提供关于每个节目的信息,包括节目特点,诸如频道号、节目名称、开始时间、结束时间、已流逝时间、剩余时间、分级(如果有的话)、话题、主题和节目内容的简单说明。节目检测器22利用EPG功能,将输入节目分成预先设定的类别中之一种,即体育、经典的老电影、动作电影等等。节目检测器22的分析结果然后被发送到并存储在存储器26中。注意,按照视频信息的内容对节目分类,在所属技术领域中是众所周知的,并能以各种方式进行。特别地,申请人已经提交了一些关于如何根据用户简档分类节目的申请。例如参看1999年12月17日申请的美国专利申请号09/466,406、2000年7月27日申请的美国专利申请号09/627,139、2000年2月4日申请的美国专利申请号09/666,401和美国专利申请号09/498,271,它们被转让给相同的受让人,在此采用作为参考。
节目检测器22也处理和生成代表给定用户的收视历史,以确定收视者观看最多的节目/频道的类型,然后生成用户的收视习惯,以便在存储器26中建立用户简档。作为选择,收视者可以在生成用户简档时明确地指定他或她喜欢的节目的类型。图3表示按照本发明实施例的用户简档形成步骤。接收器10观察用户随着时间的收视习惯(步骤100),在此期间如上所述地对每个输入视频节目分类(步骤120)。这里,包括最经常观看的节目和频道的类型在内的用户收视习惯以及数据被分级,并用于在存储器26中建立用户简档。这样,就能根据用户的收视模式获得反映用户对各种频道和/或节目的喜欢或不喜欢的数据库,使得接收器10以后能推荐收视者将会付费预订的节目或频道的列表。
本发明允许收视者按照他们的希望有选择地用许多方式为节目或频道付费。这样,收视者就能按照他们的偏好定制为收视指定的频道或演出付费的计划。为了只为需要的电视频道(选项1)或演出(选项2)付费,在用户与接收器10之间存在一个适当的接口,用于收集用户对他或她希望观看的频道或演出的类型的选择。这里,用户可选择多个电视节目或表演。作为选择,接收器10能根据视频节目的分类和过去收视历史,建议收视者基于过去收视历史所喜好的频道或演出(选项3)。这样,用户就能选择由接收器10建议的频道或演出的一些或全部而付费。
图4例示在预订有线或卫星服务时定制付费选择的操作步骤。在步骤200,接收器10响应用户的请求,根据来自有线或卫星服务提供商的输入视频节目(P)和如图3中所述而获得的用户简档(U),显示一个呈现付费选项(选项1、选项2、选项3)的至少一个的付费选择菜单。在步骤220,如果用户输入他或她希望正常付费的具体频道或节目,则在步骤240,收视者将仅为那些频道和演出付费。这里,收视者有权选择来安排连续地记录那些特定的频道或演出供以后显示。然而,如果所请求的频道或节目已经在进行中,则接收器10在电视监视器上显示它们以供收视。
如果收视者在步骤220中选择另一个选项,则在步骤260中,接收器10推荐收视者可能有兴趣为之付预订费的一些演出。通过比较过去的用户简档与新的输入节目,接收器10也能推荐一系列与过去观看过的节目相似的其它新演出。例如,如果收视者有与其它节目(即体育节目)相比更经常地观看喜剧表演的历史,则接收器10将推荐收视者为喜剧表演节目付费。按照这一类似的方式,接收器10根据过去的历史推荐收视者喜欢观看的一些演出,使得收视者只为它们感兴趣的演出付费。在被给予这种推荐时,收视者通过选择一些顶级的推荐演出,能进一步缩小推荐演出的范围。收视者也能安排,以连续方式记录所有的或所选择的推荐演出,以供以后收视。最后,在步骤280,收视者能按有线或卫星服务提供商按照希望的预订计划付费。
结果,收视者就能只在指定的时间现看感兴趣的频道或演出,由此向收视者提供一种更精确的记账体验(billing experience)。相应地,收视者不必为他们不看的或对他们来说不感兴趣的演出付费。之后,收视者能进行与上述的类似的操作,按照具体情况的需要更改预订计划。例如,如果收视者下一个月要出国,收视者能指令接收器10记录他或她预订的所有节目,供以后归来时观看,或者按需要更改预订计划。
