技术领域
本发明总体上涉及打印头监视器，更具体地涉及一种用于监视热打印头使用情况的热打印系统和方法。
背景技术
尽管许多不同类型的热打印头通常使用在商用和家用打印机中，但已知的打印头具有共同的缺点。例如，当把声称有缺陷的热打印头返回到制造商或经销商时，通常难以确定该热打印头是真正有缺陷还是误使用了打印头。热打印头是针对特定的工作条件而设计的，并且取决于热打印头安装于其中的打印机，这些热打印头可能由于超出设计参数之外的使用而发生故障。另外，难以确定在发生故障之前消费者从打印头获得了多少实际的使用。
具有如下的监视器或打印系统将是有利的，该监视器或打印系统监视热打印头的使用情况；优选地存储打印头操作规范和性能规格；优选地存储实际打印头操作特征；优选地提供可用于优化打印头设计参数的数据；并优选地与远程操作系统交互。
发明内容
一种热打印头数据获取单元监视打印头功能并累积可存储在存储器中的对应数据。一种带有连接到打印头驱动器电路的数据获取单元的打印系统将提供用于分析打印头使用状况和故障原因的数据。所述数据获取单元可以装配在打印头板上或通过诸如USB的外部连接部来连接，使得可将数据发送到打印系统的另一部分或者发送到远程计算机或存储器。

优选的是，DAU 20与打印头集成在一起，以提供“智能”打印头，然而它也可以与外部操作系统70交互。操作系统70可以是个人计算机、本地服务器或经由无线接口或物理网络而通信的远程服务器。
在DAU 20内，使用情况跟踪模块32进行操作以确定打印头执行的线性打印的量。来自使用情况跟踪模块32的数据使得可以分析打印头的可能使用寿命。使用情况跟踪模块32提供有关平均打印头寿命的信息，并可以再细化以更准确地确定动作情况，由此可以改进性能。
如在下面将描述的，打印头的可通过使用情况跟踪模块32确定的一些特征包括但不限于：(1)脉冲重复分析/特性描述；(2)打印速度分析；(3)电压分析/特性描述；(4)跟踪开路和短路元件；(5)加密数据传输；(6)环境数据获取；和/或(7)操作数据获取。优选的是，DAU 20使用模拟/数字转换器来读取热头电压(即，打印头工作的电压)，并读取热敏电阻信号18以确定打印头工作温度。
再参照图3，热打印头的示例性热打印头驱动器电路30包括能够产生八百三十二(832)个墨点的打印表面。由于相关联的电阻器52或其他加热元件所产生的热量，从打印头中的墨盒脱离的墨水生成各点。参照图3的上部，为了简化示意图，以64为一组来设置与潜在墨点54相关联的位置。从打印头喷出的墨滴数部分地是由数据信号28来确定的，优选地接收所述数据信号28作为多个并行数据信号28A到28D的复用信号。
数据信号28A到28D由数据锁存器56来处理，数据锁存器56由来自DAU 20的锁存信号14和时钟信号12来控制。数据锁存器66(也称为“触发器”)输出信号到“与”门68。“与”门68还从DAU 20接收选通信号16。来自DAU 20的选通信号16优选地包括多个选通信号16A到16D。“与”门处理触发器66的输出和选通信号16A到16D，以提供数字信号。所得数字信号由反相器64处理，然后通过加热或电阻元件52。当电流流经加热或电阻元件52时，从打印头的墨盒的关联位置喷出墨点。

再参照图1，优选的是，DAU 20包括电压跟踪模块38。电压跟踪模块38优选地确定打印头的工作电压。可以通过确定平均打印头电压、最大打印头电压和/或最小打印头电压来测定打印头的工作电压。打印头工作的最大电压提供了关于打印头是否用在正常的工作条件下的有用信息。如果平均打印头电压、最小打印头电压或最大打印头电压在正常工作范围之外，则相应的打印头数据在评价打印头故障或性能质量时是有用的。
数据传输模块36在DAU 20上操作，并被配置为向外部接口24发送数据。优选地但非必要的是，外部接口24是USB接口。外部接口24优选地是中断驱动的，并且数据传输模块36优选地能够对发送到另一个操作系统70的数据通信进行加密。接口连接器22优选地是直接对微控制器46进行编程的专用端口。接口连接器22用于对DAU 20进行初始编程。数据传输模块36将优选地监视来自外部操作系统70的对信息的外部请求。当数据传输模块36接收到请求时，它可以通过将存储器34中存储的数据经由外部接口24发送到外部系统70来进行答复。优选的是，数据传输模块36在发送数据之前要求密码。
优选的是，DAU 20包括打印机功率模块40，打印机功率模块40进行操作以确定打印系统工作的功率量。特定打印头工作的瓦特数对于打印质量和打印头的寿命都是至为关键的。

因为打印系统10的产品功能优选地是在特定打印分辨率的情况下以线性打印的量来测定的，所以打印分辨率信息非常重要。如果使用不同的打印分辨率，则产品可能过早地发生故障，或者过早的故障可能表示需要相应地修改打印头以顾及在DAU 20的监视中反映的状况。
打印头应该工作在多大的电阻很重要，这是因为该电阻与打印头在预设瓦特数下工作时所经受的电压直接相关。
再参照图1，优选的是，打印系统10包括与DAU 20通信的温度传感器，该温度传感器用于监视打印头的工作温度。温度跟踪模块42获得来自热敏电阻44的数据和热敏电阻信号18。
本发明包括监视打印头性能的方法。该方法优选地利用上述打印系统10和DAU 20来实现。本发明的方法优选地包括：对表示完成的线性打印的量的数据进行评价，以确定发生故障之前打印头所提供的预期使用寿命的百分比。该百分比可以与其他收集的性能和操作数据一起使用，来诊断打印头故障的原因。

如上所详述，本发明的方法优选地包括以下步骤：收集与打印头在其上打印的介质的类型有关的数据；并且，收集与打印头在打印过程中的工作特征有关的数据。以上描述了诸如电压、速度、功率等的工作特征的示例。记录和/或监视该信息提供了在常规的视觉检查过程中一般不能观察到的诊断信息。通过监视在打印头工作过程中的诸如电压的特征，可以使用不适当的工作状况来防止打印头故障并用于产品改进。
工作特征数据优选地与介质类型数据相关联，以提供与打印头使用的介质的兼容性有关的可量化的数据。本发明的方法提供了对于打印头和打印头使用的介质的制造商有用的可量化的兼容性数据。因而，本发明的方法使得可以针对打印头和可打印介质的各种组合而设立基准点。
分析这些基准点使得打印头制造商能够设计优异的产品。基准点数据还使得打印头制造商能够关注通过优化其他参数来以最低的成本给出最大的价值。
本领域技术人员可以发现，在不偏离本发明的广泛发明概念的情况下可以对本发明的上述实施例做出改变。例如，在不偏离本发明的范围的情况下，打印头可以只包括打印头驱动器头30，或可以包括打印头驱动器电路30和打印头传感器及控制电路20。因此，应该理解，本发明不限于公开的具体实施例，而是旨在涵盖处于所附权利要求书限定的和/或附图中所示的本发明的精神和范围内的所有变型例。

Claims (34)

1、一种具有打印头使用情况传感器的打印系统，该打印系统包括：
具有相关联的打印头驱动器电路的打印头；和
与所述打印头驱动器电路通信的数据获取单元，该数据获取单元感测表示所述打印头的打印动作的信号，并将相应的数据信号发送到存储器。
