Abstract
A manifold assembly for an injection molding apparatus, comprising a first melt distribution manifold section defining a melt flow passage having an inlet and an outlet, and a sub-manifold section spaced apart from the first melt distribution manifold section and defining a sub-manifold melt passage having an inlet and an outlet. A melt link is disposed between and joins the first melt distribution manifold section and the sub-manifold section, the melt link defining a melt link passage having an inlet communicating with the outlet of the melt flow passage and an outlet communicating with the inlet of the sub-manifold melt passage. A melt mixer is positioned in the melt link passage. According to another aspect, an injection molding apparatus for co-injection molding comprising a manifold assembly defining first and second melt passages for delivering first and second materials from a melt source to an injection molding nozzle and a melt mixer positioned in at least one of the first and second melt passages.
Claims (14)
1. A manifold assembly for an injection molding apparatus, comprising:
a first melt distribution manifold section defining a melt flow passage having an inlet and an outlet;
a sub-manifold section spaced apart from the first melt distribution manifold section and defining a sub-manifold melt passage having an inlet and an outlet;
a melt link disposed between and joining the first melt distribution manifold section and the sub-manifold section, the melt link defining a melt link passage having an inlet communicating with the outlet of the melt flow passage and an outlet communicating with the inlet of the sub-manifold melt passage; and a melt mixer positioned in the melt link passage.
a first melt distribution manifold section defining a melt flow passage having an inlet and an outlet;
a sub-manifold section spaced apart from the first melt distribution manifold section and defining a sub-manifold melt passage having an inlet and an outlet;
a melt link disposed between and joining the first melt distribution manifold section and the sub-manifold section, the melt link defining a melt link passage having an inlet communicating with the outlet of the melt flow passage and an outlet communicating with the inlet of the sub-manifold melt passage; and a melt mixer positioned in the melt link passage.
2. The manifold assembly of claim 1 wherein the melt mixer is a static mixer.
3. The manifold assembly of claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the melt link includes a first end that is received within a portion of the first melt distribution manifold section and a second end that is received within a portion of the sub-manifold section.
4. The manifold assembly of any one of claims 1 to 3 wherein the melt mixer is adapted for reducing an amount of acetaldehyde generated by PET
melt flow.

5. The manifold assembly of any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein the melt mixer is adapted for improving temperature uniformity in a melt flow through the manifold assembly.
6. The manifold assembly of any one of claims 1 to 5 wherein the first melt distribution manifold section defines a plurality of melt flow passages and the manifold assembly includes:
a plurality of further sub-manifold sections spaced apart from the first melt distribution manifold section, each of the further sub-manifold sections defining a respective further sub-manifold melt passage; and a plurality of further melt links, each of the further melt links being disposed between and joining the first melt distribution manifold section and a respective further sub-manifold section and defining a further melt link passage for passing melt flow from the first melt distribution manifold section to the respective further sub-manifold section; and a plurality of further melt mixers, each of the further melt mixers being positioned in a respective one of the further melt link passage.
a plurality of further sub-manifold sections spaced apart from the first melt distribution manifold section, each of the further sub-manifold sections defining a respective further sub-manifold melt passage; and a plurality of further melt links, each of the further melt links being disposed between and joining the first melt distribution manifold section and a respective further sub-manifold section and defining a further melt link passage for passing melt flow from the first melt distribution manifold section to the respective further sub-manifold section; and a plurality of further melt mixers, each of the further melt mixers being positioned in a respective one of the further melt link passage.
7. An injection molding apparatus for co-injection molding comprising:
a manifold assembly defining first and second melt passages for delivering first and second materials from a melt source to an injection molding nozzle; and a melt mixer positioned in at least one of the first and second melt passages.

8. The injection molding apparatus of claim 7 wherein the manifold assembly includes front and rear melt distribution manifolds, the front melt distribution manifold defining the first melt passage and the rear melt distribution manifold defining the second melt passage.
9. The injection molding apparatus of claim 7 or 8 wherein the melt mixer is positioned in the first melt passage.
10. The injection molding apparatus of claim 9 wherein a further melt mixer is positioned in the second melt passage.
11. The injection molding apparatus of any one of claims 7 to 10 wherein the melt mixer is a static mixer.
12. The injection molding apparatus of any one of claims 7 to 11 wherein the melt mixer is adapted for reducing an amount of acetaldehyde generated by PET melt flow.
13. The injection molding apparatus of any one of claims 7 to 12 wherein the melt mixer is adapted for improving temperature uniformity in a melt flow through the manifold assembly.
14. The injection molding apparatus of any one of claims 7 to 13 wherein the manifold assembly includes:
a first melt distribution manifold section defining a first portion of the first melt passage;
a sub-manifold section spaced apart from the first melt distribution manifold section and defining a second portion of the first melt passage; and a melt link disposed between and joining the first melt distribution manifold section and the sub-manifold section, the melt link defining a melt link passage communication with each of the first portion and second portions of the first melt passage, the melt mixer being positioned in the melt link passage.
