Abstract
A biological surgical patch is made by a method that includes the steps of providing a natural animal tissue that has a substrate (1), crosslinking and fixing the substrate (1), minimizing the antigens from the substrate (1), tanning the substrate (1), an incorporating an active layer (2) in the substrate (1).
Claims (19)
1. A method for preparing a biological surgical patch, comprising:
providing a natural animal tissue that has a substrate;
crosslinking and fixing the substrate;
minimizing the antigens from the substrate;
tanning the substrate; and incorporating an active layer in the substrate.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the active layer includes polypeptide or glycosaminoglycan.
3. The method of claim 1, wherein the cross-linking and fixing step is accomplished using an epoxy compound that has a hydrocarbon backbone, that is water-soluble, and which does not contain an ether or ester linkage in its backbone.
4. The method of claim 3, wherein the epoxy compound is selected from the group consisting of an epoxide, a diamide, a diisocyanate, or a carbodiimide.
5. The method of claim 1, wherein minimizing the antigens from the substrate include:
utilizing an active reagent to block specific active groups in the proteins of the substrate; and utilizing a reagent with strong hydrogen bonding power to replace the specific hydrogen bonding in the spiral chains of the protein molecules in the substrate and alter its specific conformation.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the natural animal tissue is pericardium.
7. The method of claim 1, wherein tanning the substrate includes:
producing polymers from monomers; and grafting the polymers into collagen molecules.

8. A biological surgical patch, comprising:
a natural animal tissue that has a substrate that has been crosslinked, from which antigens have been minimized, and whose collagen molecules have been grafted, the substrate having an active layer incorporated therein.

9. The patch of claim 8, wherein the active layer includes a polypeptide or glycosaminoglycan.
10. The patch of claim 8, wherein the substrate is fixed by an epoxy compound that has a hydrocarbon backbone, that is water-soluble, and which does not contain an ether or ester linkage in its backbone.
11. The patch of claim 10, wherein the epoxy compound is selected from the group consisting of an epoxide, a diamide, a diisocyanate, or a carbodiimide.
12. The patch of claim 8, wherein the antigens are minimized from the substrate by an active reagent to block specific active groups in the proteins of the substrate, and a reagent with strong hydrogen bonding power to replace the specific hydrogen bonding in the spiral chains of the protein molecules in the substrate and alter its specific conformation.
13. The patch of claim 8, wherein the natural animal tissue is pericardium.
14 A biological surgical patch made by a method comprising:
providing a natural animal tissue that has a substrate;
crosslinking and fixing the substrate;
minimizing the antigens from the substrate;
tanning the substrate; and incorporating an active layer in the substrate.

15. The patch of claim 14, wherein the active layer includes a polypeptide or glycosaminoglycan.

19. The patch of claim 14, wherein the natural animal tissue is pericardium.
