Abstract
A method and apparatus for facilitating connecting or disconnecting a first member to a second member, the apparatus comprising a frame (110) , a rocker assembly (108) connected to the frame (110) , the rocker assembly (108) having at least first and second arms, a first engaging assembly (120) for engaging the first member and a second engaging assembly (140) for engaging a second member, the first engaging assembly (120) and second engaging assembly (140) connected to the frame (110) , a first torque assembly (101,102) arranged between the first engaging assembly (120) and said first arm of the rocker assembly (108) , a second torque assembly (103,104) arranged between the second engaging assembly (140) and said second arm of the rocker assembly (108) , the second engaging assembly (140) fixed to the frame (110) , the method comprising the steps of engaging a second member with the second engaging assembly (140) , engaging a first member with the first engaging assembly (120) and activating the first or second torque assembly (101,102,103,104) to rotate the first engaging assembly (140) such that, in use, torque generated by the first torque apparatus reacts through the rocker assembly (108) , to the second engaging assembly (140) .
Claims (49)
1. An apparatus for facilitating connecting and disconnecting a first member to a second member, the apparatus comprising a frame (110), a rocker assembly (108) connected to the frame (110), the rocker assembly (108) having at least first and second arms, a first engaging assembly (120) for engaging the first member and a second engaging assembly (140) for engaging a second member, the first engaging assembly (120) and second engaging assembly (140) connected to the frame (110), a first torque assembly (101,102) arranged between the first engaging assembly (120) and said first arm of the rocker assembly (108), a second torque assembly (103,104) arranged between the second engaging assembly (140) and said second arm of the rocker assembly (108) apparatus such that, in use, torque generated by the first torque apparatus reacts through the rocker assembly (108), to the second engaging assembly.
2. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, further comprising a piloting apparatus (134a,116a,110a,144) such that the first engaging assembly (120) is rotatable with respect to the frame (110).
3. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 1 or 2, further comprising a piloting apparatus (110a,144,145,110) such that the second engaging assembly (140) is rotatable with respect to the frame (110).
4. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein the first engaging assembly (120) is arranged on top of the second engaging assembly (140).
5. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first torque assembly (101,102) comprises at least one extendible member.
6. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 5, wherein the at least one extendible member (101,102) comprises a piston and cylinder.
7. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 5 or 6, wherein the first torque assembly (101,102) comprises at least two extendible members.
8. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 7, wherein the first engaging assembly (120) has a housing with a throat for receiving the first member, each of the at least two extendible members (101,102) arranged on each side of said throat.

An apparatus as claimed in Claim 8, wherein said at least first and second arms of the rocker assembly (108) are movable about a pin or point with respect to the frame (110), one of said extendible members (101) is arranged on said first arm and the other of the extendible members (102) is arranged on a further arm.
10. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 9, wherein the further arm is on an opposing side of the pin to the first arm.
11. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the second torque assembly comprises at least two extendible members (103,104).
12. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 11, wherein the second engaging assembly (140) has a housing having a throat, each of the at least two extendible members (101,102) arranged on each side of said throat.
13. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 12, wherein the second engaging assembly (140) has a housing with a throat for receiving the second member, each of the at least two extendible members (103,104) arranged on each side of said throat.
14. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 12 or 13, wherein said at least first and second arms of the rocker assembly (108) are movable about a pin or point with respect to the frame (110), one of said extendible members (103,104) is arranged on said second arm and the other of the extendible members (103,104) is arranged on a further arm.
15. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 14, wherein the further arm is on an opposing side of the pin to the second arm.
16. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the frame (110) comprises first and second plates (116,118), the first and second engaging assemblies (12,140) arranged between the plates (116,118).
17. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising at least one link (112) for selectively linking or fixing the frame (110) to one of the first and second engaging assemblies (120,140).
18. An apparatus as claim 16 and 17, further comprising at least one spacer (114) fixed between the first and second plates (116,118), wherein the at least one link (112) is fixed at one end to the spacer (114).
19. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 18, wherein the at least one link (112) is slidably arranged on the spacer (114).
20. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first and second engaging assemblies (120,140) are substantially identical.
21. An apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the first and second engaging assemblies (120,140) comprise a housing (122,124,130b,114).
22. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 21, wherein the housing comprises a first plate (122), a second plate (124) and at least one spacer (114,130b).
23. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 20, wherein the at least one (130b) comprises a spacer clevis.
24. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 22 or 23, wherein the first plate (122) has a projection (134).
25. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 24, wherein the projection is in the form of an arc.
26. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 25, wherein the frame (110) comprises a throat, the projection guided by a wall (116a) defining the shape of the throat.
27. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 21 to 26 wherein the first or second engaging assemblies (120,140) each have a throat formed in the housing.
28. An apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 21 to 27, wherein the first or second engaging assembly (120,140) comprises a die carrier (127b,127c).
29. An apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 21 to 28, wherein the first or second engaging assembly (120,140) comprises a die (132).
30. An apparatus as claimed in Claims 28 or 29, wherein the first or second engaging apparatus comprises a movement assembly for moving the die or die carrier, such that in use, the die or die carrier are movable towards the first or second member for engagement therewith.
31. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 30, wherein the movement assembly (126a,126b,126c) is also for retracting the die or die carrier, such that in use, the die or die carrier are movable away from the first or second member for disengagement therewith.
32. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 30 or 31, wherein the movement assembly (126a, 126b, 126c) comprises a piston and cylinder.
33. An apparatus as claimed in Claim 32, wherein the piston and cylinder is arranged to rotate on or about a pin (126p).
34. An apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 30 to 33, wherein the die (132) or die carrier (127b,127c) is movable on a torque arm (130u,130l), wherein in use, the torque arm (130u,130l) is connected to the housing (122,124), such that torsional loads are at least partly taken through the torque arm (130u,130l) to the housing (122,124,130b).
35. An apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 30 to 34, wherein the die (132) or die carrier (127b,127c) is guided by at least one spacer (130b,130c).
36. An apparatus as clamed in any of Claims 30 to 35, wherein three movement apparatus (12a,126b,126c) are arranged about the throat in the housing (122,124,130b,114).
37. An iron roughneck comprising an apparatus as claimed in any preceding claim and a spinner (12) such that in use the spinner (12) rotates one of said first and second members.
38. An iron roughneck comprising the apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 36 and a carriage.
39. A drilling rig comprising an apparatus as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 36 and a carriage (20) for moving the apparatus towards and away from a threaded members to be connected or disconnected.
40. A drilling rig as claimed in Claim 39, wherein the carriage (20) is arranged on a post (14) located in a floor (RF).
41. A drilling rig as claimed in Claim 39 or 40, further comprising a console for communication with the apparatus for rotating a tubular member.
42. A drilling rig as claimed in Claim 40, 41 or 42, wherein the threaded members comprise any one of: drill pipe, casing, liner, perforated liner, drill bit, mud motor, collars, downhole pump, liner hanger assembly parts; well tools; monitoring tools; well cleaning tool, cementing tool, coiled tubing and coiled tubing tools.
43. A method for facilitating connecting or disconnecting a first member to a second member with an apparatus, the apparatus comprising a frame (110), a rocker assembly (108) connected to the frame (110), the rocker assembly (108) having at least first and second arms, a first engaging assembly (120) for engaging the first member and a second engaging assembly (140) for engaging a second member, the first engaging assembly (120) and second engaging assembly (140) connected to the frame (110), a first torque assembly (101,102) arranged between the first engaging assembly (120) and said first arm of the rocker assembly (108), a second torque assembly (103,104) arranged between the second engaging assembly (140) and said second arm of the rocker assembly (108) of the second engaging assembly (140) fixed to the frame (110), the method comprising the steps engaging a second member with the second engaging assembly (140), engaging a first member with the first engaging assembly (120) and activating the first or second torque assembly (101,102,103,104) to rotate the first engaging assembly (140) such that, in use, torque generated by the first torque apparatus reacts through the rocker assembly (108), to the second engaging assembly (140).
44. A method in accordance with Claim 43, wherein the second torque assembly (101,102,103,104) is operated, the second rocker arm moves outwardly moving the first torque assembly (101,102,103,104) on the other first arm towards the frame (110) and rotating or moving the first engaging apparatus (120) a first amount to rotate and preferably torque the first member to the second member, the first torque assembly (101,102,103,104) is operated to rotate the first engaging apparatus to rotate and preferably torque the first member to the second member.
45. A method in accordance with Claim 43, wherein the first torque assembly comprises an extendible member and second assembly comprises an extendible member the method comprising the steps of operating the second torque assembly (101,102,103,104) to extend to move the second rocker arm outwardly moving the first torque assembly (101,102,103,104) on the other first arm towards the frame (110) and rotating or moving the first engaging apparatus (120) a first amount, operating the first torque assembly (101,102,103,104) to extend to rotate the first engaging apparatus to rotate and preferably torque the connection a second amount.
46. A method in accordance with Claim 43, 44 or 45 further comprising the steps of disengaging the first engaging assembly (120) from the first member and disengaging the second assembly (120) from the second member.
47. A method in accordance with Claim 46, further comprising the step of unfixing the second engaging assembly (140) from the frame (110), fixing the first engaging assembly (120) to the frame (110) activating the first or second torque assembly (101,102,103,104) to rotate the second engaging assembly (140) such that, in use, torque generated by the first torque apparatus reacts through the rocker assembly (108), to the first engaging assembly (120).
48. An apparatus for facilitating connecting or disconnecting a first member to a second member, the apparatus comprising a frame (110) and first and second engaging assemblies (120,140) and a means (112) for selectively fixing one of the first and second engaging assemblies to the frame (110), such that the other of the first and second assemblies can rotate.
49. An apparatus for facilitating connecting or disconnecting a first member to a second member, the apparatus comprising a frame (110) and first and second engaging assemblies (120,140), each having three movable die carriers and powered movement apparatus for moving the die carriers simultaneously and in synchronisation.
