Abstract
Described is an exercise apparatus that includes reciprocating foot pedal structures where the pedal structures include various mechanisms for absorbing foot impact or forces on the foot. The pedal structures can also include a mechanism for generating a biasing force generally normal to the upper surface of the foot pedal effective to restore the pedal to its normal position after foot impact. The impact absorbing mechanisms can include resilient members, fluid filled bladders and hinge arrangements.
Claims (19)
1. A foot pedal assembly for an exercise apparatus having a generally reciprocating mounting member comprising:
a foot receiving portion having upper and lower surfaces;
a base secured to the mounting member, said foot receiving portion movable from a first position to a second position with respect to said base when an operating force is applied to said upper surface; and a biasing portion operatively associated with said foot receiving portion and said base effective to provide a biasing force generally from said base to said foot receiving portion.
a foot receiving portion having upper and lower surfaces;
a base secured to the mounting member, said foot receiving portion movable from a first position to a second position with respect to said base when an operating force is applied to said upper surface; and a biasing portion operatively associated with said foot receiving portion and said base effective to provide a biasing force generally from said base to said foot receiving portion.
2. The foot pedal assembly of claim 1, wherein said foot receiving portion is pivotally coupled to said base portion at a first location.
3. The foot pedal assembly of claim 2, wherein said biasing portion includes a resilient member disposed between said lower surface of said foot receiving portion and said base portion at a second location.
4. The foot pedal assembly of claim 1, wherein said biasing portion is secured to said lower surface of said foot receiving portion.
5. The foot pedal assembly of claim 1, wherein said biasing portion includes a fluid contained in a bladder.
6. The foot pedal assembly of claim 5, wherein said fluid is a liquid.
7. The foot pedal assembly of claim 6, wherein said bladder includes a valve operative to allow selective filling of said bladder with said fluid.
8. The foot pedal assembly of claim 1, wherein a portion of said biasing portion is configured as a hinge connecting said foot receiving portion to said base wherein said hinge provides at least a portion of said biasing force.
9. The foot pedal assembly of claim 8, wherein a second portion of said biasing portion includes a resilient member interposed between said lower surface of said foot receiving portion and said base.
10. An exercise apparatus comprising:
a body structure including a reciprocating mounting structure; and a foot pedal assembly coupled to said mounting structure, said foot pedal assembly including a foot receiving portion and a biasing structure, said foot receiving portion having upper and lower surfaces and said biasing structure coupled to said foot receiving portion and configured to provide a biasing force generally normal to said upper surface when said upper surface is acted upon by a user's foot force in the opposite direction.
a body structure including a reciprocating mounting structure; and a foot pedal assembly coupled to said mounting structure, said foot pedal assembly including a foot receiving portion and a biasing structure, said foot receiving portion having upper and lower surfaces and said biasing structure coupled to said foot receiving portion and configured to provide a biasing force generally normal to said upper surface when said upper surface is acted upon by a user's foot force in the opposite direction.
11. The exercise apparatus of claim 10, wherein at least a portion of said foot pedal assembly is secured to said mounting structure.
12. The exercise apparatus of claim 10, wherein said foot pedal assembly further includes a base portion, said foot receiving portion pivotally coupled to said base portion and said base portion fixedly coupled to said mounting structure.
13. The exercise apparatus of claim 12, wherein said biasing portion includes a resilient member disposed between said lower surface of said foot receiving portion and said mounting structure.
14. The exercise apparatus of claim 12, wherein said pivotally coupling includes a pivot shaft rotatably secured to said foot receiving portion and said base.
15. The exercise apparatus of claim 10, wherein said biasing portion includes a bladder.
16. The exercise apparatus of claim 15, wherein a liquid or a gas fluid is contained within said bladder.
17. The exercise apparatus of claim 16, wherein said bladder includes a valve member configured to allow bleeding and filling of said bladder with said fluid.
18. The exercise apparatus of claim 10, wherein said biasing portion includes an element forming a hinge having spring characteristics that provides at least a portion of said biasing force.
19. The exercise apparatus of claim 18, wherein said biasing portion includes a base member secured to said mounting structure and further includes a resilient member disposed between said lower surface of said foot receiving portion and said base member.
