Abstract
A weapon sight can be mounted on a weapon. According to still another aspect of the invention, the sight takes a selected action if it detects the presence of a selected color within radiation originating externally of the sight.
Claims (30)
1. ~An apparatus comprising a weapon 'sight that includes:
structure configured to support said sight on a weapon;
a detector portion that can detect radiation originating externally of said sight; and a control portion coupled to said detector portion, and responsive to the presence of a selected color in radiation detected by said detector portion for taking a selected action.

2. ~An apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein said selected color is a fluorescent orange.
3. ~An apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein said sight includes a display coupled to said control portion for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon, said selected action including preventing the presentation on said display of the information that relates to aiming a weapon.
4. ~An apparatus according to Claim 1, wherein said weapon sight includes a warning indicator coupled to said control portion, said selected action including actuating said warning indicator.
5. ~An apparatus according to Claim 4, wherein said sight has a field of view that relates to aiming a weapon; and wherein said warning indicator is a visible indicator that is disposed within said field of view.
6. ~An apparatus according to Claim 4, wherein said sight includes:
an image detector coupled to said control portion and responsive to radiation originating externally of said sight, said image detector serving as said detector portion; and a display coupled to said control portion for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon, including images detected by said image detector, said warning indicator being a visible indicator in the form of information presented on said display by said control portion.

7. ~A method of operating a weapon-mountable sight having a detector portion that can detect radiation originating externally of said sight, comprising:
taking a selected action in response to the presence of a selected color in radiation detected by said detector portion.

8. ~A method according to Claim 7, including selecting a fluorescent orange to be said selected color.
9. ~A method according to Claim 7, including configuring said sight to have a display for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon; and wherein said taking of said selected action includes preventing the presentation on said display of the information that relates to aiming a weapon.
10. ~A method according to Claim 7, including configuring said weapon sight to have a warning indicator; and wherein said taking of said selected action includes actuating said warning indicator.
11. ~A method according to Claim 10, wherein said sight has a field of view that relates to aiming a weapon; and including configuring said sight so that said warning indicator is a visible indicator within said field of view.
12. ~A method according to Claim 10, including:
configuring said sight to have an image detector responsive to radiation originating external to said sight, said image detector serving as said detector portion;
configuring said sight to have a display for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon, including images detected by said image detector;
configuring said warning indicator to be a visible indicator; and carrying out said actuating of said warning indicator in a manner that includes presenting information on said display.

configuring said sight to have a display for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon, including images detected by said image detector;
configuring said warning indicator to be a visible indicator; and carrying out said actuating of said warning indicator in a manner that includes presenting information on said display.
13. ~An apparatus comprising a weapon sight that includes:
means for supporting said sight on a weapon;
detector means for detecting radiation originating externally of said sight; and control means for taking a selected action in response to the presence of a selected color in radiation detected by said detector portion.

14. ~An apparatus according to Claim 13, wherein said selected color is a fluorescent orange.
15. ~An apparatus according to Claim 13, wherein said sight includes display means coupled to said control means for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon; and wherein said control means carries out said taking of said selected action in a manner that includes preventing the presentation on said display means of the information that relates to aiming a weapon.
16. ~An apparatus according to Claim 13, wherein said weapon sight includes warning means coupled to said control portion for selectively presenting a warning; and wherein said control means carries out said taking of said selected action in a manner that includes actuating said warning means.
17. ~An apparatus according to Claim 16, wherein said sight has a field of view that relates to aiming a weapon; and wherein said warning means includes a visible indicator disposed within said field of view.
18. ~An apparatus according to Claim 16, wherein said sight includes:
image detecting means coupled to said control means and responsive to radiation originating external to said sight, said image detecting means serving as said detector means; and display means coupled to said control means for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon, including images detected by said image detecting means, said warning means including a visible indicator in the form of information presented on said display by said control means.

19. ~An apparatus comprising a weapon sight that includes;
structure configured to support said sight on a weapon;
a detector portion that can detect a level of ambient illumination external to said sight; and a control portion coupled to said detector portion, said control portion being responsive to said detector portion for taking a selected action when a level of ambient illumination external to said sight is less than a selected level of illumination,

a detector portion that can detect a level of ambient illumination external to said sight; and a control portion coupled to said detector portion, said control portion being responsive to said detector portion for taking a selected action when a level of ambient illumination external to said sight is less than a selected level of illumination,
20. ~An apparatus according to Claim 19, wherein said selected level of illumination represents a level of illumination needed for safe weapon operation.
21. ~An apparatus according to Claim 19, wherein said sight includes a display coupled to said control portion for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon, said selected action including preventing the presentation on said display of the information that relates to aiming a weapon.
22. ~An apparatus according to Claim 19, wherein said weapon sight includes a warning indicator coupled to said control portion, said selected action including actuation of said warning indicator,
23. ~An apparatus according to Claim 22, wherein said sight has a field of view that relates to aiming a weapon; and wherein said warning indicator is a visible indicator that is disposed within said field. of view.
24. ~An apparatus according to Claim 22, wherein said sight includes :
an image detector coupled to said control portion and responsive to radiation originating externally of said sight, said image detector serving as said detector portion; and a display coupled to said control portion for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon, including images detected by said image detector, said warning indicator being a visible indicator in the form of information presented on said display by said control portion.

25. ~A method of operating a weapon-mountable sight having a detector portion that can detect a level of ambient illumination external to said sight, comprising:
using said detector portion to determine a level of ambient illumination external to said sight; and taking a selected action in response to a determination that a level of ambient illumination external to said eight is less than a selected level of illumination.

26. ~A method according to Claim 25, including setting said selected level of illumination to be a level of illumination needed for safe weapon operation.
27. ~A method according to Claim 25, including configuring said sight to have a display for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon; and wherein said taking of said selected action includes preventing the presentation on said display of the information that relates to aiming a weapon.
26. ~A method according to Claim 25, wherein said sight includes a warning indicator; and wherein said taking of said selected action includes actuating of said warning indicator.
29. ~A method according to Claim 28, wherein said sight has a field of view that relates to aiming a weapon; and including configuring said warning indicator to be a visible indicator disposed within said field of view.
30. ~A method according to Claim 28, including configuring said sight to have an image detector that is responsive to radiation originating external to said sight and that serves as said detector portion;
including configuring said sight to have a display for displaying information that relates to aiming a weapon, including images detected by said image detector;
wherein said using includes evaluating image information from said image detector to effect said determination of a level of ambient illumination external to said sight; and wherein said warning indicator is a visible indicator and said actuating thereof includes providing said warning indicator as a visible indicator in the form of information presented on said display.
