Abstract
A method of measuring an analyte in a biological fluid comprises applying an excitation signal having a DC component and an AC component. The AC and DC responses are measured; a corrected DC response is determined using the AC response; and a concentration of the analyte is determined based upon the corrected DC response. Other methods and devices are disclosed.
Claims (20)
1. A method of measuring the concentration of an analyte in a biological fluid test sample, the method comprising:
applying a first signal having an AC component to the test sample;
measuring a first electrical response of the test sample, the first electrical response having an AC component;
applying a second signal to the test sample;
measuring a second electrical response of the test sample; and determining a value indicative of the analyte concentration of the test sample based at least in part upon the first electrical response and the second electrical response, wherein the determining includes correcting the second electrical response based at least in part upon the first electrical response.
applying a first signal having an AC component to the test sample;
measuring a first electrical response of the test sample, the first electrical response having an AC component;
applying a second signal to the test sample;
measuring a second electrical response of the test sample; and determining a value indicative of the analyte concentration of the test sample based at least in part upon the first electrical response and the second electrical response, wherein the determining includes correcting the second electrical response based at least in part upon the first electrical response.
2. The method of claim 1, and further comprising:
applying a third signal to the blood sample, the third signal having an AC
component;
and measuring a third response to the third signal, the determining being based at least in part upon the first response, the second response, and the third response.

3. The method of claim 1 or 2, wherein the first signal is an AC signal.
4. The method of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the first response comprises magnitude and phase angle information.
5. The method of any one of clams 1 to 4, wherein the first response comprises an admittance value.
6. The method of any one of claims 1 to 5, wherein the first signal comprises more than one frequency.
7. The method of any one of clams 1 to 6, wherein the AC component of the first signal has a frequency not less than about 1 Hz and not greater than about 20kHz.
8. The method of any one of clam 1 to 7, wherein the second test signal is a DC signal.
9. The method of any one of claims 1 to 8, further comprising applying the first test signal to the sample before the second test signal.
10. The method of any one of claims 1-8, further comprising applying the first test signal to the sample after the second test signal.
11. The method of any one of claims 1 to 10, further comprising applying the first signal and the second signal to the biological fluid at least in part over a common time period.
12. The method of any one of claims 2-11, wherein the determining includes correcting the second response to the second signal based at least in part upon the first response to the first signal and the third response to the third signal.
13. The method of any one of claims 2-12, wherein the measuring the first response and the measuring the second response occur before the measuring the third response.
14. The method of any one of claims 2-13, further comprising applying the first signal to the blood sample before the second signal and before the third signal.
15. The method of any one of claim 1 to 14, and fir comprising measuring a temperature of the test sample, and determining the hematocrit value of the blood sample using the AC response and the temperature.
16. The method of any one of claims 1 to 15, wherein the determining has a Total Test Time of about 3 seconds or less.
17. The method of any one of claims 1 to 16, wherein the test sample has a sample volume of less than or equal to 0.4 µl.
18. An apparatus for determining a glucose concentration of a blood sample, comprising a test chamber adapted to receive the blood sample;
a first electrode circuit adapted to apply a first test signal having an AC
component and a second test signal having a DC component to the blood sample upon the sample being received in the test chamber;
a second electrode circuit adapted to measure a first response to the first test signal and a second response to the second test signal; and a processor adapted to process the first response and the second response to determine a value indicating the glucose concentration of the blood sample.

component and a second test signal having a DC component to the blood sample upon the sample being received in the test chamber;
a second electrode circuit adapted to measure a first response to the first test signal and a second response to the second test signal; and a processor adapted to process the first response and the second response to determine a value indicating the glucose concentration of the blood sample.
19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the test chamber is formed upon a disposable test strip.
20. A method for determining the concentration of a medically significant component of a biological fluid comprising the steps of:
applying a first signal having an AC component to the biological fluid;
measuring a first response to the first signal; and determining an identity of the biological fluid based upon the first response.
