Abstract
An automated banking machine (10) includes a user interface (12) including an opening (20). Users of the machine deliver and receive individual sheets and stacks of sheets to and from the machine through the opening. Stacks of sheets may include sheets such as notes, checks or other documents. Stacks input to the machine may include mixtures of various types of sheets. The machine operates to receive notes, process checks and perform other operations. Notes received in the machine and assessed as valid may be recycled and dispensed to other users. Notes assessed by the machine as being of questionable validity may be marked with a removable mark and subjected to further analysis. Checks processed by the machine may be imaged by an imaging device, cancelled and stored in the machine or alternatively returned to a user.
Claims (71)
1. An automated banking machine apparatus comprising:
a machine housing;
a controller within the machine housing;
a cash dispenser;
a user interface including a card accepting opening in supporting connection with the machine housing, wherein the apparatus is operative to dispense cash to users responsive to inputs to the user interface;
a card reader in the machine housing adapted to read data encoded on cards moved through the card accepting opening, the card reader including an inlet end adjacent the card accepting opening, and an outlet end disposed within the housing and in an inward direction relative to the card accepting opening and inlet end;
a movable member disposed adjacent the outlet end, wherein when a card is moved from the card reader through the outlet end, the card is operatively engaged with the movable member and is moved in the inward direction away from the card reader.

a user interface including a card accepting opening in supporting connection with the machine housing, wherein the apparatus is operative to dispense cash to users responsive to inputs to the user interface;
a card reader in the machine housing adapted to read data encoded on cards moved through the card accepting opening, the card reader including an inlet end adjacent the card accepting opening, and an outlet end disposed within the housing and in an inward direction relative to the card accepting opening and inlet end;
a movable member disposed adjacent the outlet end, wherein when a card is moved from the card reader through the outlet end, the card is operatively engaged with the movable member and is moved in the inward direction away from the card reader.
2. The apparatus according to claim 1 and further comprising:
a bin in operative connection with the outlet end, wherein the card is moved away from the card reader while positioned within the bin.

3. The apparatus according to claim 2 wherein the movable member is operative to cause the card to be moved away from the card reader by being thrown in the inward direction.
4. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the movable member comprises a resilient portion.
5. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein as the card moves from the outlet end the resilient portion is deformed, and after the card is moved from the card reader the resilient portion is operative to cause the card to be thrown in the inward direction.
6. The apparatus according to claim 5 wherein the card reader comprises at least one outlet roller adjacent the outlet end, wherein the card is thrown as it moves in the inward direction and disengages the at least one outlet roller.
7. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the resilient portion acts as a leaf spring.
8. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the bin comprises a bounding wall, wherein the bin is bounded inwardly by the bounding wall and wherein the card is thrown toward the bounding wall.
9. The apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the bin includes a movable closure member, wherein the closure member is selectively movable between open and closed positions, wherein in the open position of the closure member cards within the bin are accessible so as to be removable therefrom, and in a closed position cards within the bin are not accessible so as to be removable therefrom.
10. The apparatus according to claim 9 wherein the movable closure member is in operative connection with a lock, wherein the movable closure member is enabled to be moved from the closed position to the open position responsive to the lock being in an unlocked condition.
11. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the movable closure member comprises a lid.
12. The apparatus according to claim 8 wherein the user interface comprises a fascia portion in supporting connection with the machine housing, and wherein the fascia portion comprises a fascia opening, and further comprising a card housing in operatively supporting connection with the card reader, wherein the card accepting opening extends in the card housing, and wherein in an operative position of the card reader, the card housing extends in the fascia opening.
13. The apparatus according to claim 12 wherein the card housing extends in surrounding relation of the card accepting opening.
14. The apparatus according to claim 13 wherein in the operative position of the card reader, the card housing extends through the fascia opening.
15. The apparatus according to claim 12 and further comprising a mount operatively supporting the card reader in connection with the machine housing, wherein the mount enables the card reader to be moved relative to the fascia portion, whereby the card housing may be moved so as to not extend in the fascia opening.
16. The apparatus according to claim 15 and further comprising a gate in supporting connection with the fascia portion, wherein the gate is adapted to close the fascia opening when the card housing does not extend therein.
17. The apparatus according to claim 16 wherein the gate is movably mounted in supporting connection with the fascia portion, and further comprising at least one cam surface in operative connection with the gate, wherein as the card housing is moved to extend in the fascia opening the card housing operatively engages the at least one cam surface and causes the gate to move relative to the fascia opening.
18. The apparatus according to claim 17 wherein the fascia portion includes an inside face adjacent the fascia opening, and further comprising at least one ramp surface extending in supporting connection with the inside face, wherein the at least one ramp surface is operative to guide the card housing into the fascia opening as the card reader is moved to the operative position.
19. The apparatus according to claim 18 wherein the fascia portion is movably mounted in supporting connection with the machine housing, wherein the fascia portion is movable vertically relative to the machine housing, and wherein the at least one ramp surface is adapted to vertically position the fascia portion by engagement with the card housing.
20. The apparatus according to claim 18 wherein the fascia portion is movably mounted in supporting connection with the housing, wherein the fascia portion is movable horizontally relative to the machine housing, and wherein the at least one ramp surface is adapted to horizontally position the fascia portion by engagement with the card housing.
21. The apparatus according to claim 19 wherein the fascia portion is movably mounted in supporting connection with the machine housing, wherein the fascia portion is movable horizontally relative to the machine housing, and wherein the at least one ramp surface is adapted to horizontally position the fascia portion by engagement with the card housing.
22. The apparatus according to claim 21 wherein the mount comprises at least one slide, wherein the card reader and bin are movably positioned relative to the machine housing in supporting connection with the at least one slide.
23. The apparatus according to claim 22 wherein the card housing comprises at least one illumination device.
24. The apparatus according to claim 23 wherein the fascia portion comprises a recessed pocket, and wherein the fascia opening extends in the recessed pocket.
25. The apparatus according to claim 3 wherein the controller is operative to cause the card to be moved in the inward direction from the card reader.
26. The apparatus according to claim 25 wherein the apparatus further comprises a keypad, wherein each user provides at least one input to the keypad corresponding to a card input to the card reader by the respective user, and wherein the controller is operative to cause the card to be moved into the bin responsive to input of at least one input to the keypad not corresponding to the card.
27. A method comprising:
a) receiving a card from a user of an automated banking machine apparatus including a cash dispenser, into a card reader within the apparatus;
b) determining through operation of a controller that the apparatus is to retain the card within the apparatus rather than returning it to the user;
c) throwing the card in an inward direction away from the card reader into a bin within the apparatus.

28. The method according to claim 27 wherein (c) includes operatively engaging the card with a movable member.
29. The method according to claim 28 wherein the movable member includes a resilient portion, and prior to (c) moving the card in an inward direction through operation of the card reader, wherein movement of the card in the inward direction is operative to deform the resilient portion of the movable member.
30. The method according to claim 29 and subsequent to (c) further comprising:
d) opening a closure member bounding the bin; and e) removing the card from the bin.

31. The method according to claim 30 and subsequent to (c) and prior to (e) further comprising:
unlocking a lock that is operative in a locked condition to hold the closure member in a closed position.

32. The method according to claim 30 wherein (a) includes passing the card through a card housing in operatively fixed engagement with the card reader, which card housing extends through a fascia opening in a fascia portion in supporting connection with a machine housing of the apparatus.

moving a gate away from the fascia opening by engagement with the card housing as the card housing is moved toward the fascia housing.

35. An automated banking machine apparatus comprising:
a machine housing;
a controller within the machine housing;
at least one input device, wherein the apparatus is operative to dispense cash responsive to inputs to the at least one input device;
a user interface including a fascia portion movably mounted in supporting connection with the machine housing, wherein the fascia portion includes a fascia opening;
wherein the at least one input device includes a card reader, and further comprising a card housing in operative connection with the card reader, the card housing including a card accepting opening therein, and wherein in an operative position the card housing extends in the fascia opening and cards are enabled to be passed to the card reader through the card accepting opening;
wherein the card housing and fascia portion are mounted in relatively movable supporting connection with the machine housing and are relatively movable between the operative position and a service position wherein the card housing does not extend in the fascia opening;
wherein when the card housing and the fascia portion are relatively moved from the service position to the operative position, the card housing operatively engages and moves the fascia portion relative to the machine housing to enable the card housing to extend in the fascia opening.

wherein the card housing and fascia portion are mounted in relatively movable supporting connection with the machine housing and are relatively movable between the operative position and a service position wherein the card housing does not extend in the fascia opening;
wherein when the card housing and the fascia portion are relatively moved from the service position to the operative position, the card housing operatively engages and moves the fascia portion relative to the machine housing to enable the card housing to extend in the fascia opening.
36. The apparatus according to claim 35, wherein the fascia portion includes an inside face, and further comprising at least one ramp surface in operative connection with the inside face, wherein the fascia portion is moved by operative engagement of the card housing and the at least one ramp surface as the fascia portion and card housing move toward the operative position.
37. The apparatus according to claim 36 wherein the fascia portion is moved both vertically and horizontally relative to the machine housing through operative engagement with the card housing.
38. The apparatus according to claim 36 and further comprising a gate, wherein the gate is movably mounted in supporting connection with the inside face, and wherein as the card housing and fascia portion move toward the operative position the gate is moved by operative engagement with the card housing away from the fascia opening.
39. The apparatus according to claim 38 wherein the gate is in operative connection with at least one cam surface, wherein the gate is moved away from the fascia opening through operative engagement of the card housing and the at least one cam surface.
40. The apparatus according to claim 39 wherein responsive to the card housing and fascia portion moving from the operative position toward the service position, the gate moves relative to the inside face and blocks the fascia opening.
41. The apparatus according to claim 40 wherein the fascia portion includes a horizontally elongated channel and further comprising a lip in supporting connection with the machine housing and extending in the channel, wherein movement of the fascia portion relative to the machine housing is constrained by engagement of the lip within the channel.
42. The apparatus according to claim 40 wherein the card reader includes an inlet end wherein the card housing is adjacent the inlet end, and an outlet end opposed of the inlet end, and further comprising a bin in operative connection with the outlet end, wherein cards moved through the card reader through the outlet end are received in the bin.
43. The apparatus according to claim 40 and further comprising at least one slide, wherein the card reader is mounted in supporting connection with the machine housing through the at least one slide, and wherein during movement between the operative and service positions the card reader moves relative to the machine, housing in supporting connection with the at least one slide.
44. The apparatus according to claim 42 and further comprising a movable member, wherein the movable member operatively engages cards passed from the outlet end of the card reader and moves the engaged cards away from the card reader in the bin.
45. The apparatus according to claim 44 wherein the movable member comprises a resilient portion, and wherein the resilient portion is operative to cause cards to be thrown away from the outlet end of the card reader.
46. The apparatus according to claim 45 wherein the resilient portion is deformed as a card moves from the outlet end and the energy absorbed through such deformation is released in throwing the card.
47. The apparatus according to claim 44 and further comprising a movable closure member bounding the bin, wherein in a closed position of the closure member cards in the bin are prevented from being removed therefrom, and in an open position of the closure member cards are enabled to be removed from the bin.
48. The apparatus according to claim 47 and further comprising a lock in operative connection with the movable closure member, wherein in a locked condition the lock prevents the movable closure member from moving to the open position.
49. The apparatus according to claim 48 and further comprising at least one slide, wherein the card reader and bin are movably mounted in supporting connection with the machine housing through the at least one slide, and wherein when the fascia portion and card housing move between the operative position and the service position the card reader and bin move relative to the machine housing in supporting connection with the at least one slide.
50. The apparatus according to claim 49 wherein the card housing includes at least one illumination device, and wherein in the operative position the card housing extends through the fascia opening and the illumination device is visible from outside the machine housing.
51. An automated banking machine apparatus comprising:
a machine housing;
a cash dispenser in the machine housing;
a card reader in the machine housing;
a user interface including a card accepting opening in operative connection with the card reader;
wherein the user interface includes a fascia portion moveably mounted in supporting connection with the housing and movable relative to the card reader, wherein the fascia portion includes the card accepting opening;
at least one structural portion in operative connection with the card reader, wherein the at least one structural portion operatively engages and causes the fascia portion to move relative to the machine housing such that the card accepting opening is enabled to pass cards from outside the housing to the card reader.

wherein the user interface includes a fascia portion moveably mounted in supporting connection with the housing and movable relative to the card reader, wherein the fascia portion includes the card accepting opening;
at least one structural portion in operative connection with the card reader, wherein the at least one structural portion operatively engages and causes the fascia portion to move relative to the machine housing such that the card accepting opening is enabled to pass cards from outside the housing to the card reader.
52. The apparatus according to claim 51 wherein the structural portion bounds the card accepting opening.
53. The apparatus according to claim 50 and further comprising a card housing, wherein the card housing includes a structural portion, and wherein the card housing surrounds the card accepting opening.
54. The apparatus according to claim 53 wherein the fascia portion includes a fascia opening, and wherein the card housing extends in the fascia opening.
55. The apparatus according to claim 51 and further comprising at least one ramp portion in supporting connection with the fascia portion, wherein the fascia portion moves through operative engagement of the at least one ramp portion and the at least one structural portion.
56. The apparatus according to claim 51 wherein the fascia portion moves both vertically and horizontally relative to the machine housing.
57. The apparatus according to claim 51 and further comprising a gate in supporting connection with the fascia portion, wherein when the at least one structural portion operatively disengages the fascia portion the gate prevents cards from moving into the card accepting opening.
58. The apparatus according to claim 57 wherein the gate is in operative connection with at least one cam surface, and wherein the gate is moved responsive to operative engagement of the at least one cam surface and the at least one structural member.
59. The apparatus according to claim 58 wherein the card accepting opening is in operative connection with an inlet end of the card reader, and wherein the card reader further includes an outlet end opposed of the inlet end, and further comprising a bin in operative connection with the outlet end, wherein cards passed from the outlet end of the card reader are positioned in the bin.
60. The apparatus according to claim 59 and further comprising a movable member, wherein cards passed from the card reader through the outlet end are moved away from the card reader through operative engagement with the movable member.
61. The apparatus according to claim 60 wherein the movable member comprises a resilient portion, and wherein the resilient portion is operative to cause cards passed through the outlet end to be thrown away from the card reader within the bin.
62. The apparatus according to claim 61 and further comprising a movable closure member bounding the bin, and a lock in operative connection with the movable closure member, wherein in an unlocked condition of the lock the moveable closure member is enabled to be moved to an open position wherein cards in the bin are enabled to be removed from the bin, and wherein in a locked condition of the lock the movable closure member is held in a closed position such that the closure member prevents cards in the bin from being removed therefrom.
63. The apparatus according to claim 62 and further comprising at least one slide, wherein the card reader and bin are movably mounted in supporting connection with the machine housing through the at least one slide.
64. The apparatus according to claim 54 wherein the card housing extends through the card accepting opening.
65. A method comprising:
a) operatively engaging a structural portion operatively connected with a card reader mounted in supporting connection with a machine housing of an automated banking machine that includes a cash dispenser, with a fascia portion movably mounted in supporting connection with the machine housing;
b) moving the fascia portion relative to the machine housing responsive to operative engagement in (a) to an operative position of the fascia portion wherein a card is enabled to be passed to the card reader from outside the machine through a card accepting opening.
a) operatively engaging a structural portion operatively connected with a card reader mounted in supporting connection with a machine housing of an automated banking machine that includes a cash dispenser, with a fascia portion movably mounted in supporting connection with the machine housing;
b) moving the fascia portion relative to the machine housing responsive to operative engagement in (a) to an operative position of the fascia portion wherein a card is enabled to be passed to the card reader from outside the machine through a card accepting opening.
66. The method according to claim 65 wherein the machine includes a bin operatively connected to the card reader, wherein the bin holds at least one card captured by the machine during at least one transaction attempt that was not authorized by the machine, and prior to (a) further comprising:
c) removing at least one card from the bin.

67. The method according to claim 66 wherein the machine further includes a card housing including a card accepting opening, wherein the card housing includes a structural portion, and wherein (b) includes moving the fascia portion such that the card housing extends through a fascia opening in the fascia portion.
68. The method according to claim 66 wherein (b) includes moving the fascia portion relative to the machine housing both vertically and horizontally.
69. The method according to claim 67 wherein (a) includes operatively engaging the card housing with the fascia portion through at least one ramp surface operatively connected to the fascia portion.
70. The method according to claim 69 wherein (b) includes moving the fascia portion relative to the machine housing both vertically and horizontally, and further comprising prior to the fascia portion moving to the operative position:
moving a gate away from the fascia opening through operative engagement with the card housing.

71. ~The method according to claim 70 and prior to (c) further comprising:
d) ~receiving a card into the machine through the card accepting opening;
e) ~reading data from the card through operation of the card reader;
f) ~determining through operation of the machine that a transaction using the card is not authorized;
g) ~moving the card through operation of the card reader to the bin;
h) ~operatively engaging the card with a movable member that causes the card to move away from the card reader within the bin.
d) ~receiving a card into the machine through the card accepting opening;
e) ~reading data from the card through operation of the card reader;
f) ~determining through operation of the machine that a transaction using the card is not authorized;
g) ~moving the card through operation of the card reader to the bin;
h) ~operatively engaging the card with a movable member that causes the card to move away from the card reader within the bin.
