Abstract
The invention relates to a method including the steps of providing a participant with at least one document markup form containing information relating to a collaborative document markup session and including coded data indicative of an identity of the document markup form and of at least one reference point of the document markup form, receiving, in a computer system , indicating data from a sensing device operated by said participant involved in the document markup session, said indicating data regarding the identity of the document markup form and a position of the sensing device relative to th e document markup form, the sensing device when placed in an operative positio n relative to the document markup form, sensing the indicating data using at least some of the coded data, identifying in the computer system and from th e indicating data, at least one parameter relating to the document markup session, and providing at least one other participant remote from said participant with at least one document markup form containing information representative of the at least one parameter.
Claims (49)
1. A method of enabling collaborative document markup between participants, the method including the steps of:
providing a participant with at least one document markup form containing information relating to a collaborative document markup session and including coded data indicative of an identity of the document markup form and of at least one reference point of the document markup form;
receiving, in a computer system, indicating data from a sensing device operated by said participant involved in the document markup session, said indicating data regarding the identity of the document markup form and a position of the sensing device relative to the document markup form, the sensing device, when placed in an operative position relative to the document markup form, sensing the indicating data using at least some of the coded data;
identifying in the computer system and from the indicating data, at least one parameter relating to the document markup session; and providing at least one other participant remote from said participant with at least one document markup form containing information representative of the at least one parameter.

identifying in the computer system and from the indicating data, at least one parameter relating to the document markup session; and providing at least one other participant remote from said participant with at least one document markup form containing information representative of the at least one parameter.

The method of claim 1 in which said at least one parameter relating to the document markup session is associated with at least one zone of the document markup form, and in which the method includes identifying, in the computer system and from the zone relative to which the sensing device is located, said at least one parameter.

The method of claim 2 which includes receiving, in the computer system, data regarding movement of the sensing device relative to the document markup form, the sensing device sensing its movement relative to the document markup form, using at least some of the coded data; and identifying, in the computer system and from said movement being at least partially within said at least one zone, said at least one parameter of the document markup session.
4. A method of enabling document markup between participants, the method including the steps of:
providing a participant with at least one document markup form containing information relating to a collaborative document markup session and including coded data indicative of at least one parameter of the document markup session;
receiving, in a computer system, data from a sensing device operated by said participant regarding said at least one parameter and regarding movement of the sensing device relative to the document markup form, the sensing device, when moved relative to the document markup form, sensing the data regarding said at least one parameter using at least some of the coded data and generating the data regarding its own movement relative to the document markup form;
interpreting, in the computer system, said movement of the sensing device as it relates to said at least one parameter; and providing at least one other participant remote from said participant with at least one document markup form containing information representative of the at least one parameter.

5. The method of claim 1 or claim 4, in which the parameter is an action parameter of the collaborative document markup session, the method including effecting, in the computer system, an operation in respect of the action parameter.
6. The method of claim 5, in which the action parameter of the collaborative document markup session is selected from the group comprising:
sending an invitation to a document markup session;
starting a document markup session;
ending a document markup session;
sending a message to a participant during a document markup session;
viewing messages sent during a document markup session;
viewing the page history of a document markup session;
ordering the printing of a document markup page;
updating a document markup page; and ordering the reprinting of a new document markup page.

The method of claim 1 or claim 4 in which the parameter is an option parameter of the collaborative document markup session, the method including identifying, in the computer system, that the participant has entered a hand-drawn mark by means of a sensing device and effecting, in the computer system, an operation associated with the option parameter.
8. The method of claim 7 in which the option parameter is associated with at least one of:
an access level;
a message recipient; and a line color

The method of claim 1 or claim 4 in which the parameter is a text parameter of the collaborative document markup session, the method including identifying, in the computer system, that the participant has entered handwritten text data by means of the sensing device and effecting, in the computer system, an operation associated with the text parameter.
10. The method of claim 9 which includes converting, in the computer system, the handwritten text data to computer text.
11. The method of claim 9 in which the text parameter is associated with at least one of:
a document markup session description;
a document markup session purpose;
a document markup session start date;
a start time;
an end time;
an attachment document identification;
a participant identification;
a message subject description; and a message text.

The method of claim 1 or claim 4 in which the parameter is an authorization parameter of the collaborative document markup session, the method including identifying, in the computer system, that the participant has entered a handwritten signature by means of the sensing device and effecting, in the computer system, an operation associated with the authorization parameter.
13. The method of claim 12 which includes verifying, in the computer system, that the signature is that of the participant.
14. The method of claim 13 in which the authorization parameter is associated with updating a document markup page.
15. The method of claim 1 or claim 4 in which the parameter is a graphical parameter of the collaborative document markup session, the method including identifying, in the computer system, that the participant has entered hand-drawn graphical information by means of the sensing device and effecting, in the computer system, an operation associated with the graphical parameter.
16. The method of claim 15 in which the graphical parameter is associated with a markup to a document markup page.
17. The method of claim 1 or claim 4 in which at least one of the one or more document markup form contains information relating to at least one of:
booking a document markup session;
controlling a document markup session;
selecting invitees to a document markup session;
inviting participants to a document markup session;
composing messages in a document markup session;
sending messages in a document markup session;
viewing messages in a document markup session;
selecting a line color in a document markup session;
viewing the history of a document markup session;
printing document markup pages;
updating document markup pages;
reprinting document markup pages; and ending a document markup session.

18. The method of claim 1 or claim 4 which includes printing the document markup form on demand.
19. The method of claim 18 which includes printing the document markup form on a surface of a surface-defining means and, at the same time that the document markup form is printed, printing the coded data on the surface.
20. The method of claim 19 which includes printing the coded data to be substantially invisible in the visible spectrum.
21. The method of claim 1 or claim 4 which includes retaining a retrievable record of each document markup form generated, the document markup form being retrievable using its identity as contained in its coded data.
22. The method of claim 1 or claim 4 which includes distributing a plurality of the document markup forms using a mixture of multicast and pointcast communications protocols.
23. The method of claim 1 or claim 4 in which the sensing device contains an identification means which imparts a unique identity to the sensing device and identifies it as being associated with a particular document markup session participant and in which the method includes monitoring, in the computer system, said identity.
24. The method of claim 1 or claim 4 which includes providing all required information relating to the collaborative document markup session on the at least one document markup form, to eliminate the need for a separate display device.
25. The method of claim 1 or claim 4 in which the document markup form is provided on multiple pages and in which the method includes binding the pages.
26. The method of claim 1 or claim 4 in which the document markup session participants are provided with telephonic communication means for simultaneous use during the collaborative document markup session.
27. The method of claim 26, in which the telephonic communication means includes a video communication link between the participants.
28. The method of claim 26, the telephonic communication means being controlled by said computer system.
29. A system for enabling collaborative document markup between participants, the system including:
at least one document markup form containing information relating to a collaborative document markup session and including coded data indicative of an identity of the document markup form and of at least one reference point of the document markup form;
a computer system for receiving indicating data from a sensing device operated by a participant involved in the document markup session said indicating data regarding the identity of the document markup form and a position of the sensing device relative to the document markup form, the sensing device, when placed in an operative position relative to the document markup form, sensing the indicating data using at least some of the coded data, said computer system including means for identifying, from the indicating data, at least one parameter relating to the document markup session;
and means for providing at least one other participant remote from said participant with at least one document markup form containing information representative of the at least one parameter.

at least one document markup form containing information relating to a collaborative document markup session and including coded data indicative of at least one parameter of the document markup session;
a computer system for receiving data from a sensing device operated by the participant involved in the document markup session, said data regarding movement of the sensing device relative to the document markup form, and for interpreting said movement of the sensing device as it relates to said at least one parameter, the sensing device, when moved relative to the document markup form, sensing the data regarding said at least one parameter using at least some of the coded data, and generating the data regarding its own movement relative to the document markup form; and means for providing at least one other participant remote from the participant with at least one document markup form containing information representative of the at least one parameter.

42. The system of claim 29 or 32 in which the sensing device contains an identification means which imparts a unique identity to the sensing device and identifies it as being associated with a particular document markup session participant.
43. The system of claim 29 or claim 32 in which the document markup form is printed on a surface of a surface-defining means and in which the system includes a printer for printing the document markup form on the surface on demand.
44. The system of claim 43 in which the printer prints the coded data on the surface at the same time as printing the document markup form on the surface.
45. The system of claim 29 or claim 32 in which the coded data is substantially invisible in the visible spectrum.
46. The system of claim 29 which includes a database for keeping a retrievable record of each document markup form generated, each document markup form being retrievable by using its identity as included in its coded data.
47. The system of claim 43 in which, to cater for a document markup form printed on multiple pages, the printer includes a binding means for binding the pages.
48. The system of claim 29 or claim 32, including a telephone communication means for simultaneous use during the collaborative document markup session.
49. The system of claim 48, including a video communication means for use during the collaborative document markup session.
