Abstract

An apparatus for creating a transverse velocity profile of fluid flowing in a pipe which includes a mechanism in communication with the pipe for obtaining the transverse velocity of the fluid at several different locations by introducing energy into the pipe and analyzing that energy in the pipe. The transverse velocity profile is then formed from the transverse velocity obtained at the several locations. The acoustic energy can be provided along a plurality of diametrical paths in the pipe all of which are in a cross-section of the pipe producing an information signal corresponding to the transverse velocities obtained with a signal processor receiving the information signals and determining the associated transverse velocities.
