ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE

This invention relates to a reversible dryer door wherein the hinges may be mounted on either side of the door or the cabinet opening, and the handle may be mounted on either side of the front of the door.

Description

20919~1 i ~:
REVERSIBLE DRYER DOOR
`:
:~
i~ This invention relates to a domestic clothes dryer and I more particularly to a domestic clothes dryer in which the swing of the dryer door may be reversed. In the past, it has generally been found that the door which provides access to the rotating drum of a domestic clothes dryer swings permanently in one direction only and may not be conveniently reversed. The door is generally mounted i on hinges attached to one side of the access opening of the dryer cabinet and the door is held closed with a suitable plastic latch ; device which grasps and holds the keep mounted on the dryer cabinet frame.
In many instances, it would be convenient to change the direction of swing of the dryer door and in the past this has been a practical impossibility. This invention seeks to provide a dryer door which may be conveniently reversed using only a very few parts and tools. In additionj it will be found it is not necessary to disassemble the liner from the door as is necessary in United States Patent No.
5,113,562 dated May 19, 1992 in which the inner liner must be . ~ disassembled from the door and replaced in an inverted position in ;.. , ~ order to reverse the swing of the dryer door.
This application seeks to overcome all the disadvantages of the above U.S. Patent as well as provide a convenient method for providing a domestic clothes dryer in which the door may be swung from either side.
Most domestic clothes dryers of the present day, utilize a blower which pulls the drying air through the rotating drum where it i~
.,, ~;~
.

~`

, extracts moisture from any clothes which are tumbling therein and -, the moisture laden air is then ducted via the door liner into a lint filter ,;
generally located beneath the door. From the lint filter the air enters ~; a ducting mechanism connected to the fan which allows the moisture $ 5 laden air to be blown from the fan into an exhaust duct in the dryer - .
Because of the particular design which is used in most of the dryers of the present day, it will not be found convenient to provide a reversible door on a clothes dryer because the inner liner on the <~,i door forms part of the ducting mechanism for the moisture laden air.
In most instances when a door is desired to be reversed, it will be . found necessary to remove the inner liner from the door and invert the liner with respect to the door assembly in order that the permanent handle located on the outside of the dryer door will be in a position where it may be utilized on the outside of the door remote ii~ 15 from the hinge to open and clothes the dryer door. Thus, the '~ peculiarities of the chosen method of circulating dryer air through the dryer as well as locating the handle in an asymmetrical fashion on , the dryer causes serious difficuity with devising a convenient method :
~ ~ of installing a dryer door which will open or close from either side of ',t^ 20 the dryer.
X In accordance with this invention, a method is provided for reversing the opening side of a clothes dryer door without having to disassemble the inner liner From the door. The basic method comprises the steps of removing the dryer door from the dryer opening by the removal of (four) screws which hold the dryer door .,~ hinges to the cabinet. Next the dryer hinges are removed from the side of the door to which they have been previously permanently mounted and the handle is removed from the area of the depression over which it has been mounted. The hinges are next mounted on the opposite side of the door from the side from which they were removed and an escutcheon plate is removed from the depression ~ i on the opposite side of the dryer door from the location where the ':i`3, handle was previously mounted. The escutcheon plate is next mounted over the depressed area where the handle was removed
3~ and the handle is mounted on the depressed area from which the :i~3 escutcheon plate was removed.

A knock out is pressed out of the interior liner on the opposite side from where the door latch was previously mounted and a new latch is inserted in the knock out aperture. The strike which was mounted previously on the cabinet for mating with the previous latch is removed from the cabinet and a new latch is inserted on the opposite side of the cabinet in the area provided.
The door is now mounted on the dryer cabinet with the hinges on the opposite side of the cabinet holes which had been previously provided during manufacture and when the four screws have insertecl into the cabinet to hold the hinges in place, the door may now be swung frorn the opposite side of the cabinet. The latch in the door will be found to mate with the strike which has been mounted on the cabinet and for all intents and purposes the new arrangement for the dryer door swinging from the opposite direction is nowcomplete. -:
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
The foregoing objects will become more fully j ~ understood when taken with the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a domestic clothes dryer;
Figure 2 is a prospective view of the front of the door of the clothes dryer of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a prospective view of the rear of the door of the clothes dryer Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings and to Figure 1 in particular, it will be seen that a domestic clothes dryer 10 is r;i illustrated showing an arrangement whereby the door 12 is hinged `~I from the left hand side of the cabinet 14. The dryer 10 maybe of a gas or electric type it matters not which for the purposes of this invention. The dryer is provided with a control panel 16 for selecting .~?~i the various dryer routines available to the consumer. An access opening 18 is provided at the front of the dryer to allow the user to insert clothes into the clrum 20. One baffle or paddle 22 is shown ;~j, mounted on the inside surface of the drum 20. The opening 18 in 3~ the cabinet 14 in this instance is such that a lint filter 23 is exposed to the user when the door is opened. The lint filter 23is ducted into the fan or blower of the dryer to allow the passage of moisture laden .i ~ :.
, :, air through the filter and into the fan (which is not shown) for ducting to atmosphere. A door switch 24 is shown in the upper right hand corner of the door opening which will provide a signal to the control mechanism to indicate that the door is in its closed and latched position. The door as shown in Figure 2 is provided with a pair of hinges 26 and 28 at the left hand side as shown in Figure 2 and these hinges have been mounted on door 12 during assembly at the factory. Also mounted in a depression 30 of door 12 is a handle 32 i~ which is provided for the convenience of the operator in opening and ,~ 10 closing the door (Figure 3). Also, on door 12 is mounted an ~1 escutcheon plate 34 at a point which is symmetrically opposing the depression 30 on the right hand side of the door. Escutcheon 34 is ., mounted in a depression which is identical to depression 30 and is ~1 provided to mount the handle 32 in the depression beneath escutcheon 34 when the operator desires to reverse the swing of the door. On the inside of the door 12 is a gasket 36 and a latch 38 and a deflector 40. The gasket which forms no part of this invention is generally composed of a suitable flexible sealing material and the latch 38 is a plastic type insertion latch well known in the art. The deflector 40 is provided with holes 42 to allow the ingress of the ~ moisture laden air into the dryer door and to deflect clothes which ,. are tumbling in the dryer back into the drum. Thus shield 40 ,l performs two functions.
',. It will be noted that a knock out 44 is provided in the ,,~i 25 right hand side of the rear of the door of Figure 3 which will be used for remounting latch 38 when the door is to be reversed. When it is l desired to reverse the swing of the door of the dryer 10 it is ,l necessary first to remove the screws in the hinges 26 and 28 which ~,i fasten the door to the cabinet 14. When the door 12 has been removed from the cabinet the escutcheon 34 must be removed from the depression in which it is contained and in most instances ~¦ escutcheon 34 will be able to be snapped from its mounting in door 12. Escutcheon 34 may be mounted in any convenient matter in the 'i depression provided. Screws or other similar fastening devices well i 35 known in the art may be used, however, this does not form part of ,r the invention. When escutcheon 34 has been removed handle 32 ..

.~,. -4 -~' ~i ~ 2091941 GECAN3108 must be removed from depression 30, handle 32 will be held in depression 30 in the same manner as escutcheon 34 is held in its depression which may be by a snap in feature or by using screws or other similar fasteners and handle 32 is remounted where escutcheon plate 34 originally was on the left hand side of the door.
Escutcheon 34 is remounted in depression 30. The hinges 26 and 28 must be removed from the left hand side of the door shown in Figure 2 and remounted in the holes provided at the factory on the right hand side of the door 12. When this has been completed the latch 38 may (if required) be removed from its mounted position on the left hand side of the door as shown in Figure 3 and knock out 44 of the opposite side of door 12 as shown in Figure 3 is removed (or :~ simply pushed inwardly) and the latch 38 is reinstalled in knock out 44. When this has been completed it is necessary to provide a new strike on the opposite side of the door opening 18 for the relocated latch 38. The strike which is previously provided is shown at 46 in Figure 1. This strike is removed by prying it forward with a screw driver or pliers and a knock out 48 on the opposite side of opening 18 is removed and a new strike is inserted in the knock out 48.
2~ When this is completed, the hinges which were previously mounted on the left hand side of the door opening shown in Figure 1 are now mounted on the right hand side of the cabinet door opening 14 and the door is reinstalled. It will be found that the door is now hinged from the right hand side of the cabinet with the latch 38 engaging the new strike located in knock out 48. It will be found that for purposes of esthetics, it may be necessary to fill the holes left for the ~I previously mounted hinges with dummy screws or blanks of some convenient material as well as the holes on the left hand side of the cabinet 14 which may also be filled with the same devices. Similarly, where the latch 38 was previously mounted on the inside of the door, it may be convenient to fill the aperture with a plastic blank.
~I It will be seen that it is convenient to remount the door .'~. on the cabinet 14 without any special tools other than a screw driver and pliers. Alternate holes in the door may be most conveniently provided during manufacture in the factory. Door switch 24 will ;~ function in an operable manner with a door mounted either from the ;.

209194l GECAN3108 left or the right. The passage of the drying air through the shield 42 unaffected by the way the door swings. In some instances, it may be necessary to separate the inner panel of the door in order to remove the handle 32 (depending on the method of attachment of the handle) orthe escutcheon 34. Other changeswill become apparent such as the provision of a handle which fastens to the door by ~I means of fasteners which secure the handle to the door in the 9 location of the top hinge on the side remote from the hinged side of ;~ the door.. however, applicant prefers to limit his invention by the ~ 10 scope of the following claims.
