Abstract

ABSTRACT

A mop for polishing floors and other surfaces consists of an upper group and a lower group of pieces of non-woven textile material. The upper group consists of several cloth elements combined together and whose surface area increases from bottom member to top member of the group and each of which has fringes at its outer edges. The member of the lower group have no fringes and consist of a plurality of equal sized pieces of non-woven textile material whose areas are smaller than those that make up the upper group. The uppermost cloth piece in the upper group incorporates a central opening and two opposing pockets. A handle holder element is introduced into the pockets, and the periphery of the element and the receiving area defined by the pockets are of the same size and are in alignment with the lower group of cloths.

Description

A Mop for Polishing Floors and Similar Surfaces The present invention relates to a mop for polishing floors and other surfaces.
Spanish registered utility model No. 175.229 describes a polishing apparatus which consists of a flat cover within which there is a built-in metal frame-holder and which fits into the cover through an opening having a slide fastener. It is held by an elongated ring and a central device for installing a handle which protrudes through an opening in the cover. Rows of strings hang down from the cover, secured by a seam. The insertion of the metal frame through the opening in the cover is inconvenient.
The cleaning apparatus described in Spanish registered utility model No. 278.339 also consists of a flexible, elongated cloth element, with a plurality of fringes on its edges. Pockets opposlte one another are secured on the upper side, so as to introduce a flexible ~ointed holder with a rod. The wiping and polishlng processes are, disadvalitageously, effected with the same lower, flat element of the wiping part, 80 that during polishing, which is done by pressing, the dirt picked up during wiping is pressed back into the surface being treated.
It is an ob~ect of the present invention to provide a mop of this kind in which polishing i8 made possibly by means of two simultaneous processes which allow different pressures against ~he particular surface.
In accordance with the invention, there is provided, a mop for mounting on a stiff mounting support and simultaneous cleaning and polishing, comprising:
a lower section;
an upper section ~oined to sald lower-section;
said lower section comprising a plurality of ~oined fabric layers of substantially the same size and shape;
said upper section comprising a plurality of ~oined fabric layers including a bottom layer and top layer, said fabric layers having substantially the same shape, arranged in a stack and sized so that said stack tapers outwardly from said bottom layer to said top layer and the A

fabric layers of the upper section being larger than those of the lower sections;
the fabric layer of the upper section including an uppermost layer ~oined to said top layer so that a pocket is formed therebetween for engaging and aligning said stiff mounting support of substantially the same size and shape as said lower section; and an opening in said uppermost layer for inserting said mounting support into said pocket.
In one embodiment, a seam runs along the central longitudinal axis of the stack holding together the individual layers, except the uppermost layer. Other Qeams run round the central opening of the uppermost layer and the pocket or pockets in an oval continuous line, thereby joining the uppermost layer only with the layer immediately below it.
A second advantageous embodiment ha~ a plurality of seams ad~acent one another and which pass round the central opening of the uppermost layer as described above, and ~oin all of the layers together.
As a variation, the pocket or pockets are secured with a separate seam ~oining the uppermost layer to the top layer immediately below.
Opposing pockets can be so configured that the two cloth or fabric parts or tabs which result when the central opening is stamped out of the upper material forming the uppermost cloth, can be turned back and inwardly folded.
Embodiments of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure 1 shows the various components of the mop and its holder in exploded perspective view, Figure 2 is a plan view of the top of the mop, Figure 3 is a view of the mop from below, Figure 4 on the same sheet as Figure 1 is a cross-section through the mop along the line IV-IV of Figure 3.
With reference first to Figure 1, the mop 1 incorporates a holder 2 or ~tiff mountlng for ~oining it to a handle 3 for manual operation. The mop further comprises a flat structure made up of fabric layers of absorbent material, exemplified by non-woven textile cloth pieces, held together by A

stitching. The structure is either essentially rectangular, with rounded corners, or alternatively is oval.
The structure includes an upper group or section, in this example, of four cloth pieces 4, 5, 6, 7, the surface areas of which decrease from top to bottom to top of the group. The edges of the pieces are also graduated and incorporate cuts, which have strips 8 forming fringes. The structure also comprises a lower group or section of cloth pieces made up in Figure 1 of two identical materials 9, 10 whose edges are smooth and smaller than the immediately proceeding cloth above them.
All of the pieces of material described are combined together to form the structure. They are secured in the longitudinal direction by a single central seam 11 which holds them together with the exception of the uppermost cloth 4. Other seams 12, which define an inner area in a closed loop, ~oin the uppermost cloth 4 with that immediately below 5, as can be seen in Figures 2 and 4.
The uppermost piece of material 4 forms a central, rectangular opening 13 from which two tab-like parts 14 pro~ect (Figure 1). The tabs are folded inwards and form pockets 15, ~ecured by virtue of seams 16 (Figures 2 and 4).
The pockets 15 serve to accommodate the ends of the holder 2, which consists, in conventional manner, of a flat, semi-rigid part of synthetic resin, with an edge rib 17 having grooves 18 for resilience, and a central section 19 between two opposite openings 20. Within the central section 19 is a hinge system for attaching a coupling arm 22 for handle 3.
A unique feature of this mop 1 is that the pieces 9 and 10 of the lower material group are aliened with and match the size of the holder 2.
This means that the mop has a central zone for pressing against and scrubbing a surface to be cleaned. The pressure is transferred to the lower cloths 9 and 10 through the handle 3. ~evertheless there is also an outer part of the mop formed by the fringes of the materials 4, 5, 6 and 7 for softer wiping. Thus, using this mop it is possible to exert two levels of pressure at the same time on the surface to be processed, 90 as to achieve improved cleaning and polishing simultaneously.

Claims (10)

1. A mop for mounting on a stiff mounting support and simultaneous cleaning and polishing, comprising:
a lower section;
an upper section joined to said lower-section;
said lower section comprising a plurality of joined fabric layers of substantially the same size and shape;
said upper section comprising a plurality of joined fabric layers including a bottom layer and top layer, said fabric layers having substantially the same shape, arranged in a stack and sized so that said stack tapers outwardly from said bottom layer to said top layer and the fabric layers of the upper section being larger than those of the lower sections;
the fabric layer of the upper section including an uppermost layer joined to said top layer so that a pocket is formed therebetween for engaging and aligning said stiff mounting support of substantially the same size and shape as said lower section; and an opening in said uppermost layer for inserting said mounting support into said pocket.
2. The mop of claim 1, wherein the fabric layers of said upper section have fringed edges; and said lower section includes two layers; and further includes seams for joining the layers together.
3. The mop of claim 2, wherein the mop shape is rectangular having rounded corners.
4. The mop of claim 2, wherein the upper section comprises four fabric layers.
5. The mop of claim 2, said seams including a seam that runs along a central longitudinal axis of the stack and joins all layers except the uppermost layer.
6. The mop of claim 5, wherein said seams include a plurality of seams lying side-by-side running around said opening and said pocket in an oval pattern connecting the top and uppermost fabric layers to each other.
7. The mop of claim 1, wherein said pocket is formed between said top and uppermost layers by a separate seam.
8. The mop of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7, wherein a central portion of said uppermost layer is cut and folded into said pocket to form said opening.
9. The mop of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7, the fabric layers comprising non-woven textile material.
10. The mop of claim 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7, wherein there is a pair of opposing said pockets receiving said mounting support.
