ABSTRACT
BLOOD SAMPLING TUBE
An evacuable blood sampling tube closed with a seal is provided for a blood letting apparatus having a hollow cylindrical support. The hollow cylindrical support is provided at one end with a double ended hollow needle and the blood sampling tube can be inserted into the other open end so far that the one needle end pierces the seal. The sampling tube is covered at its open end with a closure element such as an aluminum foil, which additionally carries on the outside a sealing membrane of a rubber elastic material such as for example silicone caoutchouc. The closure element is provided at its side toward the interior of the tube with a continuous hot sealing layer. The cap comprises an inner and an outer jacket which surrounds the open end of the sampling tube from the inside and outside with a forced fit and a collar is provided at the inside of the inner jacket to support the closure element. The collar can be disposed about the middle third of the length of the inner jacket. The outer jacket can be longer than the inner jacket.

BLOOD SAMPLING TUBE
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
1. Field of the Invention The present invention relates to an evacuable blood sampling tube with a sealing closure for a blood letting apparatus with a hollow cylindrical support, which is provided at one end with a double ended hollow needle and where the blood sampling tube is to be inserted into the support sufficiently far so as to have the needle end pierce the sealing closure.
2. Brief Description of the Background of the . . . _ . . _ ~ . .
Invention Including Prior Art The handling of blood sampling equipment is known from U.S. patent 4,327,746~ A tube for a vacuum blood letting system is known from German Patent Application Laid Open DE-OS 2,908,817. A screw cap provides a closure element and the cap is provided with an opening. The edge of the opening in a sealing manner presses a membrane against the open end of the blood sampling tube. The membrane forms a seal and is of a material, which is pierceable by one end of ~i~

the needle. Thus these -tubes have to be produced at their openings and at their caps with threads and in addition a careful sealing of the mernbrane be-tween the cap and the -tube end has to be obtained upon screwing on of the cap. The aceess to the sample taken with such a tube re~uires finally again the unserewing of the cap, which is cumbersome and time consuming. Furthermore, it cannot be determined at the tube if an unintentional or unauthorized opening has occurred. In addition, it has been found that the vaeuum is no longer or is insuffieiently present upon longer storage of this type of tube, in partieular where it is made from a mieroporous plastie material.
A similar tube is known from German Patent Applieation Laid Open DE-OS 2,243,593. Aeeording to a particular embodirnent a metal cap is provided of the kind of a erown cap elosure. This eap eomprises in its middle part a cireular erown part and then outwardly adjoining an annular hanging down eollar with an inverted U-profile, which ends in an upwardly bent edge~ The middle part of the eireular erown part is provided of a smaller thiekness in order to allow easy piexcing by the hollow needle. At least the inner faee ofthe metal cap, but preferably the full bottom faee, is eovered with a thin proteetive layer of a polyvinyl in X

~2~g~4 order to prevent a contarnination of the contents of the tube. The sealing is attachecl at the outer face of the metal cap, and the fixed attachment of the cap with its U-proEile at the tube end is provided with a hot sealing material such as polyamide, which forms an adhesive connection between the butt surface of the collar and the outer surface of the tube end. In this way the metal cap can be removed with a crown cap opener. Again, this known teaching comprises not only a plurality of complicated molded or otherwise produced individual parts, bu-t also requires a complicated sequence of steps in the assembly and in the handling.
According to the Austrian Patent AT-PS 368,389 the tube of the latter described kind is improved by providing the closure from a planar, preferably uniform thickness, foil, which is provided on one side with a continuous hot sealable layer, which layer provides a sealing connection between the foil and tne end front face of the tube and which insulates the interior of the tube against the foil.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
1. Purposes of the Invention It is an object of the invention to provide a blood sampling tube which avoids the disadvantages of conventional blood sàmpling ~ubes.

It is another object of the present invention to provide a closure element for a blood sampling tube, which can be removed and/or opened easily and which comprises a membrane which provides only slight resistance to a pierciny by a needle.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide a relatively simple method of manufacturing a blood sampling tube assembly, which avoids complicated seals involving special forming of metal and/or solid plastic shapes.
These and other objects and advantages of the present invention will become evident from the description which follows.
2. ~Li~ Pgscri~tion of ~h~ Inve~tion According to one aspect the present invention provides a bloocl sampling tube closed with a seal and evacuable for a blood letting apparatus which comprises a sampling tube naving a straight cylindrical open end section, a cap for the sampling tube having an inner jacket for being inserted into the sampling tube and having an outer jacket for surrounding the sampling tube with the inner and outer jacket joined by a front wall to abut at the end of the sampling tube, a circular collar protruding from ~:~OgO04 the inner jacket of the eap inwardly, a sheet blank disposed from the outside about at the circular collar, a hot sealing layer disposed between the sheet blank and the eircular collar, and a sealiny membrane placed from the outside into the inner jaeket and contacting the sheet blank.
Furrows can be provided at the outside of the outer jacket. The sheet blank can be of a foil of aluminum of about uniform thickness. The sealing membrane ean eomprise silicone caoutchouc. Preferably, the sampling tube is force fitted in between the inner and the outer jacket of the cap. The eollar ean be disposed about within the range of the middle third of the length of the inner jaeket. The outer jacket of the cap can extend at least about 10 pereent longer than the inner jaeket around the sampling tube.
A hollow eylindrical support ean be disposed at the blood letting apparatus and ean eomprise a double ended hollow needle at the end opposed to the end for insertion of the sampling tube with the cap, which insertion is to extend so far as to allow the needle to pierce sealing provisions at the eap of the sampling tube. The relaxed outer diameter of the inner jaeket of the cap can be at least about 1 percent larger than the inner diameter of the sampling tube.
According`-to another aspect of this invention a method is provided for production of a blood sampling tube closed with a seal and evacuable for a blood letting apparatus. The method comprises producing a sampling tube having a straight cylindrical open end section, producing a cap from an elastic material substantially inert versus blood and having an inner jacket for joining the inside of the straight cylindrical open end section and having an outer wall for surrounding the outside of the straight cylindrical open end section joined by a front wall and having an inner circular collar disposed on the inner jacket, pressing the sampling tube open end section in between the inner jacket and the outer jacket of the cap, attaching a sheet blank to the circular collar from the outside with a hot sealing layer disposed in between, and placing a sealing membrane into the inner jacket against the flange.
The sheet blank can be of a foil of aluminum of about uniform thickness. The sealing membrane can comprise silicone caoutchouc. The sampling tube can be force fitted in between the inner and the outer jacket of the cap. The collar can be disposed about within the range of the middle third of the length of the inner jacket. The outer jacket of the cap can extend at~least about 10 percent longer than the 1~090~

inner jacket around the sampling tube.
A hollow cylindrical support can be disposed at the blood letting apparatus and a double ended hollow needle at one end. The sampling tube with the cap can be inserted from the other end such that the insertion extends so far as to allow the needle to pierce sealing provisions at the cap of the sampling tube. The relaxed outer diameter of the inner jacket of the cap can be at least about 1 percent larger than the inner diameter of the sampling tube before insertion of the sampling tube between the inner and the outer jacket of the cap.
The present invention provides the advantage that the closure element is attachedly fixed at a collar or flange of a cap having a double jacket with a hot sealable layer. The cap surrounds the open end of the sampling tube from the inside and from the outside and is positioned by way of a pressure fit at the open end. According to the invention the cap is provided with a double jacket, which is put on the end of the tube and based on this double jacket a particularly good sealing between cap and tube is achieved such that losses of vacuum are substantially avoided. It is a further advantage that the blood samples can again be closed by simply pressing the cap into the tube and that this allows a storage in a closed state.
Aecording to a further feature the colLar or flange is preferably at about the middle level of the inner cap jacket. In this way the collar can support the desired pressure fit of the cap at the tube. Preferably the outer eap jacket is longer than the inner eap jaeket by about 5 pereent of the length and more preferably by at least about 10 pereent of the length of the inner jacket. Sueh a longer outer jaeket prevents the user from touehing the blood eovered inner jacket of the cap upon opening of the tube, and thus transmission and sickness caused by infeeted blood is avoided.
The novel features which are eonsidered as eharaeteristie for the invention are set forth in the appended claims~ The invention itself, however, both as to its eonstruction and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will be best understood Erom the following description of specific embodiments when read in connection with the accompanying drawing.

Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of the cap showing inner jacket, outer jacket and front of the cap and the closure provision, Fig. 2 is a partially sectional view of the cap as put on the sampling tube.
DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION AND PREFERRED EMBODIM~NTS
Referring now to Fig. 1, there is shown the cap 1 comprising plastic material. The plastic material of the cap is preferably of such elasticity as to provide a tight and sealing fit around the end of the sampling tube. As shown here, in general the cap is of cylindrical shape and comprises an outer jacket 2, a front wall 3, and an inner jacket 4. A collar 5 or a flange is provided at the inside of the inner jack.et 4 at about half height. The col]ar 5 preferably extends into the inner tube by an annular width corresponding to from about 0.5 to 2 times the thickness of the jacket wall. The thickness of the collar preferably is from about 0.5 to 2 times the thickness of the jacket wall.
The collar 5 supports at its upper side a closure provision 6, which comprises a sheet b]ank of an aluminum foil 8 of uniform thickness and provided with a hot sealable layer 7. Preferab]y, the aluminum foil is from about 2 to 5 ~20~004 tenths of a millimeter thick and can be about 0.3 millimeter. The sheet blank can alternatively be made of other inert metal blanks or from plastic. Materials for hot sealable materials disposed on metal and/or plastic are offered commercially by numerous manu~acturers.
In addition, a sealing support 9 is provided at the foil 8. The sealing support is preferably about 1.5 to 3 millimeters thick. The sealing support can be made of a rubber elastic material such as for example silicone caoutchouc or a rubber mixture.
The sealing support is vulcanized onto the foil providing an air-tight seal and is to have the property of closing again completely if one pierces the sealing support with one end or the double-ended needle of the hollow cylindrical support and then withdraws the needle again after the sampli-ng of the blood.
As can be recognized from Fig. 2, the tube lO to be closed and sealed is inserted with its open end 11 between the outer jacket 2 and the inner jacket 4 under formation of a press fit between these parts. As shown, the outer side of the outer jacket can be provided with furrows 12 for easy handling and gripping. The tube 10 can be of glass such as labora~tory glass or of a relatively rigid and i209004 inert plastic. Preferred plastics for the tube include thermoplastic polyesters.
The inner volume of the tube 10 is placed under vacuum, which can be generated after the hot sealing of the closure 6 and after the application of the sealing support 9.
The handling and the modes of operation of the blood sampling tube as to the blood letting procedure are analogous to those described in United States patent 10 4,327,746 or in German Patent Application Laid Open DE-OS
2,908,817.
The embodiments described above can be further varied. ~he invention sampling tube can also be employed in other sampling applications such as for example the sampling of other body liquids and fluids OL for other applications in other Eields.
It will be understood that each of the elements described above, or two or more together, may also find a useful application in other types of test system configurations and sample processing procedures differing from the types described above.
While the invention has been illustrated and described as embodi~ed in the context of a blood sampling ~209004 tube and its closure, it is not intended to be limited to the details shown, since various modifications and structural changes may be made without departing in any way from the spirit of the present invention.
Without further analysis, the foregoing will so fully reveal the gist of the present invention that others can, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt it for - various applications without omitting features that, from the standpoint of prior art, fairly constitute essential characteristics of the generic or specific aspects of this nventlon .

Claims (17)

What is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is set forth in the appended claims.
1. A blood sampling tube closed with a seal and evocuable for a blood letting apparatus comprising a sampling tube having a straight cylindrical open end section;
a cap for the sampling tube having an inner jacket for being inserted into the sampling tube and having an outer jacket for surrounding the sampling tube with the inner and outer jacket joined by a front wall to abut about at the end of the sampling tube;
a circular collar protruding from the inner jacket of the cap inwardly;
a sheet blank disposed from the outside about at the circular collar;
a hot sealing layer disposed between the sheet blank and the circular collar; and a sealing membrane placed from the outside into the inner jacket and contacting the sealing blank.
2. The blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising furrows at the outside of the outer jacket.
3. The blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the sheet blank is of a foil of aluminum of about uniform thickness.
4. The blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the sealing layer comprises silicone caoutchouc.
5. The blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the sampling tube is force fitted in between the inner and the outer jacket of the cap.
6. The blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the collar is disposed about within the range of the middle third of the length of the inner jacket.
7. The blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the outer jacket of the cap extends at least about 10 percent longer than the inner jacket around the sampling tube.
8. The blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 1 further comprising a hollow cylindrical support disposed at the blood letting apparatus and comprising a double ended hollow needle at the end opposed to the end for insertion of the sampling tube with the cap, which insertion is to extend so far as to allow the needle to pierce sealing provisions at the cap of the sampling tube.
9. The blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the relaxed outer diameter of the inner jacket of the cap is at least about 1 percent larger than the inner diameter or the sampling tube.
10. A method for production of a blood sampling tube closed with a seal and evacuable for a blood letting apparatus comprising producing a sampling tube having a straight cylindrical open end section;
producing a cap from an elastic material substantially inert versus blood and having an inner jacket for joining the inside of the straight cylindrical open end section and having an outer wall for surrounding the outside of the straight cylindrical open end section joined by a front wall and having an inner circular collar disposed on the inner jacket;
pressing the sampling tube open end section in between the inner jacket and the outer jacket of the cap;
attaching a sheet blank to the circular collar from the outside with a hot sealing layer disposed in between; and placing a sealing membrane into the inner jacket against the collar.
11. The method for production of a blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the sheet blank is of a foil of aluminum of about uniform thickness.
12. The method for production of a blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the sealing membrane comprises silicone caoutchouc.
13. The method for production of a blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 10 further comprising force fitting the sampling tube in between the inner and the outer jacket of the cap.
14. The method for production of a blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the collar is disposed about within the range of the middle third of the length of the inner jacket.
15. The method for production of a blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the outer jacket of the cap extends at least about 10 percent longer than the inner jacket around the sampling tube.
16. The method for production of a blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 10 further comprising disposing a hollow cylindrical support at the blood letting apparatus and a double ended hollow needle at one end;
inserting the sampling tube with the cap from the other end such that the insertion extends so far as to allow the needle to pierce sealing provisions at the cap of the sampling tube.
17. The method for production of a blood sampling tube for a blood letting apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the relaxed outer diameter of the inner jacket of the cap is at least about 1 percent larger than the inner diameter of the sampling tube before insertion of the sampling tube between the inner and the outer jacket of the cap.
