Download Database!
A download manager is a computer program dedicated to the task of downloading (and sometime uploading) Download Databasepossibly unrelated stand-alone files from (and sometime Download Database to) the Internet for storage. Download Database This is unlike a WorldDownload DatabaseWide Web browser, which is mainly intended to Download Database browse web pages, Download Database composed of a Download Database multitude of smaller files, where error-free moving of files for permanent storage is of secondary importance. (A failed or incomplete web page file rarely ruins Download Database the page.) The typical download manager at a minimum provides means to recover from errors without losing the work already completed, and can optionally Download Database split the file to be downloaded (or uploaded) into 2 or more Download Database segments, which are then moved in parallel, potentially making the process faster Download Database within the limits of the available Download Database bandwidth. (A few servers are known to Download Database block Download Database moving files in parallel segments, on the principle that server capacity should be shared equally by all users.) Multi-source is the nameDownload Databasegiven to files that are downloaded in parallel. There are several things that some web browsers are not very good at. That's where the download managers enter the equation: Pausing the downloading of large files. Resuming broken or paused downloads (especially for very large files). Downloading files on poor connections. Downloading several files from a site automatically according to simple rules (file types, updated files, etc. - see also Offline Browser). Automatic recursive downloads (mirroring). Scheduled downloads (including, automatic hang-up and shutdown). Searching Download Database for mirror sites, and the handling of different connections to download the same file more quickly (segmented downloading). Download managers are useful for active Internet users. For dial-up users, they can automatically dial the internet service provider at night, when rates or tariffs are Download Database usually lower, Download Database download the specified files, and Download Database hang-up. Download Database They can record which links the user clicks Download Database on Download Database during the day, and queue Download Database these files for later download. For Download Database broadband users, download Download Database managers can help download very large files by resuming broken downloads, by limiting the bandwidth used, so that other internet activities are not affected (slowed) and the server is Download Database not overloaded, or by automatically navigating a site and downloading pre-specified content (photo galleries, MP3 collections, etc.) this can also include automatically downloading whole sites and regularly updating them (see Mirroring). Many Download Database download managers support Metalink, Download Database an XML file listing mirrors, checksums, and other information useful for downloading. See below Download Database for some examples of commonly used download managers. Some downloaders are optimized for a certain function. For example, Offline Explorer Download Database is designed to download entire websites. Download managers, such as Go!Zilla, were among the first adware applications displaying a banner ad in the user interface. Related to Download Database download managers are two other breeds of Internet programs, file-sharing peer-to-peer applications (Kazaa, eMule, Download Database BitTorrent, Gnutella) and stream recorders (such Download Database as StreamBox VCR). While download managers are designed to Download Database give Springbreak Game Download Ski Tools users greater control over downloads, some downloaders are created to Download Database give that control to content distributors instead. Some software companies, for example Adobe [1], provide such downloaders for downloading software on their own site. Presumably this increases reliability and reduces tech support costs to them. A possible Download Database reason is increasing the control over redistribution of their software (even when Download Database the software is freeware). In computer technology and telecommunication, on-line and off-line are defined by Federal Standard 1037C. They are states or conditions of a Download Database "deviceDownload Databaseor equipment" or of "a functional unit". To Download Database be considered on-line, a device must be Download Database at least one of: "Under the direct control of another device" "Under the direct control Download Database of the system Download Database with which it is associated" "Available for immediate use on demand by Download Database the system without human intervention" "Connected to a system, and is in operation" "Functional and Download Database ready for service" while a device that is off-line is not (e.g. it has "its main Download Database power source disconnected Download Database or turned off", and is "off-power"). One example of a common use of these concepts is a Mail User Download Database Agent Download Database that can be instructed to be in either "on-line" or "off-line" states. One such MUA is Microsoft Outlook. When it is "on-line" it will attempt Download Database to connect to mail servers (to check for new mail at regular intervals, for example), and when it is "off-line" it will not attempt Download Database to make any such connections. The "on-line" or "off-line" state Download Database of the MUA does not necessarily reflect the connection status between the computer on which it is running and Internet. The userDownload Databasemay have the computer itself Download Database on-line, connectedDownload Databaseto Internet via a cable Download Database modem or an ADSL connection, but may wish for Outlook to Download Database be off-line, so that it makes no attempt to send or to receive messages. Download Database Or Download Database the computer may be configured to employ a dial-up connection on demand (whenever an application such as Outlook attempts to make Download Database connection to a server), but the connection may be an expensive telephone call from the particular location in which the Download Database computer currentlyDownload Databasehappens to be Download Database (such as a hotel room) and the user may not wish Outlook to trigger making that call every 5 Download Database or 10 minutes to check for mail.[1] Another example of the use of these concepts is in the world of digital audio technology. A tape Download Database recorder, digital editor, or other device that is "on-line" is one whose clock is under the control of the Download Database clock of a "synchronization master" device. When the sync Download Database master commences playback, Download Database the "on-line" device automatically synchronizes itself to the master andDownload Databasecommences Download Database playing from the same point in the recording. Whereas a device that is "off-line" uses no external clock reference and relies upon its own internal clock. Download Database When Download Database a large number of devices are connected to a sync master, it is Download Database often convenient, if one wants to hear just the output of one single device, to take it Siol File Test Download off-line, because if the device is played back on-line all synchronized devices have to locate the playback point Download Database and wait Download Database for each other to be in synchronization.[2] (For Download Database further related discussion, see MIDI timecode, word sync, and recording system Download Database synchronization.) A third example of a common use of these concepts is a web browser Download Database that can be instructed to Download Database be in either "on-line" or "off-line" states. The browser only attempts to fetch pages from servers whilst in the "on-line" state. In the "off-line" state, users can perform Download Database offline browsing, where pages can be browsed using local Download Database copies of those pages that have previously been downloaded whilst in the "on-line" state. This can Download Database be useful when the computer Download Database itself is also off-line, with connection to Internet expensive Download Database or impossible. The pages are either downloaded implicitly into Download Database the web Download Database browser's own cache, as a result of prior on-line browsing by the Download Database user, or explicitly by the browser being configured to keep local copies of certain web pages, which Download Database it keeps updated when the browser is in the on-line state, either by checking that the local Download Database copies are up-to-date at regular intervals or by checking that the local copies Download Database are up-to-date whenever the browser is switched to the Download Database on-line state. One such web browser capable of being explicitly configured to download pages for offline browsing is Internet Download Database Explorer. When pagesDownload Databaseare added to the "Favourites" list, Download Database they can be Download Database marked for being made "available for offline browsing". Download Database Internet Explorer will download Download Database to local copies both the marked page and, optionally, all of the pages that it Download Database links to. In Internet Explorer version 6, the level of Download Database direct and indirect links, the Download Database maximum amount of local disc space allowed to be consumed, and the schedule on which local copies are Download Database checked to see whether they are up-to-date, are configurable for each individual Download Database "Favourite" entry. See also: Offline browsing known as Download Database "Offline favourites" was removed as a Download Database feature in the most recent version Download Oregon Trail For Free of Internet Explorer 7, which only now supports single web page saving, but not browsingDownload Databaseor storing an entire site offline.[citation needed] Similarly, off-line storage is computer storage Accelerator Download Internet that is not "available Download Database for immediate use on demand by the system without human intervention", i.e it is storage Download Database that is off-line. The ideas of "on-line" and "off-line" have been generalized from computing Download Database and telecommunication into the Download Database field of human interpersonal relationships. The distinction between what is considered "on-line" and what is considered "off-line" has become a Download Database subject of study in the field of sociology.[7] The distinction between "on-line" and "off-line" is conventionally seen as the distinction between computer-mediated communication Download Database and face-to-face communication (e.g. face time), respectively. "On-line" is virtuality, and "off-line" is reality (e.g. real life or meatspace). Slater states that this distinction is "obviously Download Database far too simple". To support his argument that the distinctions in relationships are more complex than a simple "on-line"/"off-line" dichotomy, he observes that some people draw no distinction between an "on-line" relationship, Download Database such as indulging in cybersex, and an "off-line" relationship, such as being pen-pals. He also argues that even the telephone can be regarded as an "on-line" experience in Download Database some circumstances, and Download Database that the blurring of the distinctions between the uses of various technologies (such as PDA and mobile telephone, television and Internet, and telephone and voice-over-IP) has made Download Database it "impossible to use the term 'on-line' meaningfully in the sense that was employed by Tangent Download the first generation of Internet research".[7] Slater asserts that there are legal and regulatory pressures to reduce the distinction between "on-line" Download Database and "off-line", with a "general tendency to assimilate online to offline and erase Download Database the distinction", stressing, however, that this does Download Database not Download Database mean Download Database that on-line relationships are being reduced to pre-existing off-line relationships. He Download Database conjectures that greater legal status may be assigned to on-line relationships (pointing out that contractual relationships, such as business transactions, on-line are already seen as just as "real" asDownload Databasetheir off-line counterparts), although Download Database he states it to be Download Database hard to imagine courts awarding palimony toDownload Databasepeople Download Database who have had a purely on-line sexual relationship. He also conjectures that an "on-line"/"off-line" distinction may be seen by people as "rather quaint andDownload Databasenot quite comprehensible" within 10 years.[7] The distinction where "on-line" is seen as virtuality and "off-line" as Download Database reality is sometimes inverted, with "on-line" concepts being used to define and to explain Download Database "off-line" activities, rather than (as per Download Database the conventions of the desktop metaphor with its desktops, trash cans, folders, and so forth) the other way Download Database around. Several Download Database cartoons by The New Yorker have satirized this. One Download Database includes Saint Peter asking Download Database for Download Database a user name and a password before admitting a man into Heaven. Another illustrates "the off-line store" where "All items are actual size!", where Blue Pokemon Download shoppers Download Database may "Take it home as soon as Download Database you pay for it!", and Download Database where "Merchandise may beDownload Databasehandled prior to purchase!". |
